    Upgrading a old laptop...!

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 08:15 PM PST

Recently got a new laptop for myself and then I was thinking about what I should do with my brother's old laptop which I was using for almost 2 years... I'm thinking of making the old laptop as a entertainment center for my home.... It's a Lenovo G510, i5 4200, 4GB DDR3 RAM, 500GB Mechanical Hard drive, AMD Radeon graphics...the laptop gets too much hot when it's turned on and its works very much slowly... I'm thinking of adding a 2nd 4Gb DDR3 RAM and a 120 GB SSD... It's going to cost me Rs.4,500 (60 USD). Will it be worth the upgrade?? Or else suggest me something else which might work for me...

Can I use TOR to prevent parents from monitoring web history?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 08:53 PM PST

I want to be able to use the web without fear of my parents seeing everything I search because they use an app called MyCircle to see it. (none of it is NSFW I just value my privacy). Can I use TOR without having to worry about them seeing my history?

    Miraculously self-healing laptop screen

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 06:22 AM PST

I have a Lenovo laptop, I believe it's an IdeaPad but I'm not sure which (inherited it).

About a year ago, part of the screen seemed to have died, little pixels blackened in sort of the left middle section, close to the edge.

Over the following months, this tiny crack in an otherwise vibrant sea of pixels gradually fissured, until eventually there was a gash in my laptop, about four inches in width and almost half a cm in height at peak.

It really looked like a black hole was opening slowly in my laptop, what was interesting was that it did so not by suddenly claiming pixels, but by blackening them over time.

What I find incredibly strange, however, is that a few months later, this fissure of black pixels gradually faded BACK into being living, colourful pixels again.

Right now, if you were to look at my laptop screen, I think it unlikely you would spot a single dead pixel, let alone be able to tell there was a whole slash of them across the screen. Sometimes when I'm watching something, I can see the discolouration where once there was black, the residue of nothingness, but this serves only to blow my mind all over again that this ever actually happened to my laptop.

Am I losing my marbles or is there an explanation for why and how this happened?

It may also be useful to know that my laptop screen can (although this it also does significantly less than it used to) flicker erratically sometimes when I adust the angle of tilt, like a screen with a loose connection or something until I adjust it back into a sweet spot. Clearly, the old girl has seen better days, but I'm proud to say it fights on and looks to be in rude health considering the worst periods of affliction which now appear behind it.

tl;dr - My laptop had a slash of dead pixels 4" wide and 0.4cm high which gradually appeared on the screen and subsequently gradually went away again over the course of months, now leaving barely any trace of their ever having been there. Is there an explanation?

    DIY Pattern on ITO sheet

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 05:25 AM PST

We are trying to engrave patterns into the ITO coating of a glass or plastic sheet for a small project. Is there a way to do that DIY-style? Like with the snapmaker? Ideally, we don't want the pattern to be visible.

If it's too complicated to do it DIY-style, I'd also appreciate it if you can recommend some (online) place that does custom orders.

    Thx

Help with power connector? What's its name?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 05:01 AM PST

Hello to you all! I'm having trouble finding the name of this connector of mine (pic1, pic2). It belongs to the power supply (pic3) of a Sony's videocam (VG20E) and I would like to know its name and if it is possible to power the cam via usb (by buying a USB to [power connector] cable) so that I can use it to stream.

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Security Model for GSM

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 10:13 PM PST

I'm looking to understand the security model for GSM broadcasts. Is device IMSI always present unencrypted in tower <-> device transmissions?

Maybe this is an invalid assumption, how far up the OSI model will the IMSI number travel? Can an application instance have access to the IMSI number? Will the IMSI information leak when the carrier sends off its network onto the public net?

This thing about my UPS is bugging me, need someone to help me out.

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 03:06 AM PST

So, I have a habit of switching off the PSU button when shutting down my PC, all motherboard LEDs go off after doing so. But when I do the same when electricity goes off and PC is running on UPS, the motherboard just won't turn off when I toggle the PSU switch, it takes 5-6 trying before the motherboard is off. Can someone tell me what's going on?

Also, I keep my UPS running all the time. I just take all the load off of it during power cut.

Simple website to share my screen with my students?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 07:47 PM PST

I will be teaching students online soon. My school district requires us to use their online meeting software.

When I teach, I have slides on my iPad that I write on. I can't connect my iPad to the online meeting software- it's too old

Is there any website that I can share my iPad screen to that students can then see I give them a link? The caveat is the students can NOT be able to chat with each other or videoconference on this site. (so I can't use zoom or google meet or anything). I also can't ask them to download anything.

Upgrading Ram from 8Gb to 32 Gb

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 02:41 PM PST

I'm new to this PC thing so excuse me now if i sound dumb, or vague. I have a HP Pavilion 690-0020. My motherboard allows for two DDR4 slots. Specs says my type is DDR4-2666 with speed at PC4-21300Mb/s. In my specs it says Memory upgrade: Dual Channel (2 DIMMs per channel) memory architecture; Two DDR4 UDIMM (288-pin) sockets; Supports PC4-19200 (DRR4-2400); Supports 4Gb and 8Gb DDR4 UDIMMs; Supports 4Gb on 32- bit systems; Supports 32 Gb (unbuffered) on 64-bit computers. *Note: Maximum memory shown reflects the capability of the hardware and can be limited further in the operating system. I was recommended Kingston RAM and found one that i think would work. 16Gb module - DDR44 2666MHz. Part Number: KCP426NS8/16 Specs: DDR4,2666MHz,Non-ECC,CL19,X8,1.2V,Unbuffered,DIMM,288-pin,1R,16Gb. From what i was told i have to do RAM upgrades in pairs, correct me if im wrong but would this work for my pc in 16Gb pairs? Is it too much to put the most ram a pc can handle?

    Best lav mic/camera for livestreaming?

    Posted: 30 Nov 2020 01:06 AM PST

I'm very very new at this, and I have livestream events coming up where I will simulcasting on YouTube and FB Live. I have no idea what I'm doing and will be moving around a lot with my hands full, so I can't use a handheld mic. I am scrambling and will probably just use my iPhone for now but I know that's not a longterm solution, so suggestions for good cameras for livestreaming are also welcome! Many thanks.

PS all of you on this sub are waaaay smarter than this English major, so ELIF if you please :)

Is it technically possible to embed a short-wave RF transmitter inside a cellular SIM card and have it powered by the cellphone using the residual electricity passing through the SIM?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 05:22 PM PST

In other words, manufacture a SIM card that behaves like a real SIM card but also secretly transmits RF signals that someone in a van nearby can pick up?

    Works in theory...

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 05:13 PM PST

Anyone have examples that they've seen where a technology or integration of technologies should work in theory but due to some logistical gaps it's just not feasible in practice? For example, my 5 year old son has a fire hd tablet in the back of my car that he watches youtube on through my phones hotspot. Seems like a simple concept, but the various popups that show up when the tablet reconnects to the hotspot, or the times that the tablet cant connect at all, or the times that the hotspot turns itself off, etc, means that it is often not a simple 1-2 process. And I cant very well keep stopping the car to troubleshoot. I'm wondering if anyone else has another scenario like this, where you think to yourself, this should work dammit!?

Can I connect 2 routers to 1 MIMO antenna?

Is connecting two separate routers to one MIMO antenna as easy as buying a splitter? If so will it hold it back from its maximum potential?

Does the yoga 7i have hdr? and any thoughts between the 7i and 9i in relation to value?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 04:20 PM PST

Does the lenovo yoga 7i (https://www.lenovo.com/ie/en/laptops/yoga/yoga-2-in-1-series/Yoga-7-14ITL5/p/88YGC701456) have hdr? since it has intel® iris® xe?

Also, the best price I can get with the student discount is €990 for the i7 processor on the yoga 7i and €1500 for the yoga 9i with the i7 processor.

I just don't know if I'd want to pay €500 more for a .2 improvement to the processor, a soundbar, 8 extra gb of ram and a pen... any thoughts on that?

Most helpful app with good UI to download mutiple files/data

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 02:04 PM PST

    A) For example when unzipping files, bandizip has the best UI

And it takes the fewest steps to auto-extract files

Bandizip is the easiest to use

The other options to auto-extract arent good and are actually really bad

    B) When it comes to file manager the overall best absolutely is q-dir. Everything else (tested manyyyyyyy) doesnt even do some basic things, and have extremely bad UI

    C) And for many other things, there defintely is something good out there, or there just isnt

    D)

Is there anyone here that has tested mutiple apps that downloads multiple files/links?

So they would know which has the best UI ?

And takes the fewest steps to downloads multiple files/links?

To download multiple files/links, couldn't find any helpful good sites that helped us with what's best to download mutiple files

Only found sites that listed a bunch of random dl apps

None of these sites found are helpful, they're basically throwing some random apps together

Have you found any helpful sites, or know of any actually good sites on the web for software/tools?

    For example

Is there anyone here that has tested mutiple apps that downloads multiple files/links?

So you can you see which has the best UI ?

And takes the fewest steps to downloads multiple files/links?

Swapped Intel wifi CNVI m.2 card from one gigabyte motherboard to another - should it work?

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 10:59 AM PST

I'm a tech guy but don't know a lot about wifi & m2. I have two Gigabyte motherboards, a H370 wifi and a H310N 2.0. The first one is higher end and comes with a m.2 Intel CNVI wifi card. I was able to unscrew the card holder and antenna connectors (all one unit) from the motherboard and plug it into the H310N 2.0 which has the same corresponding slot and screw holes, but it doesn't seem to be recognized in Linux (don't see it in lspci -k, which i think means the BIOS is not seeing it at all).

Should it work, and if it should, is there anything specific that I need to do to get it to work besides plug it in? If it helps, I am trying to get it working on a Kodi setup (libreelec). Thanks for the help.

Samsung TV wireless casting from Apple Devices

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 10:58 AM PST

I have a Samsung TV model UN55JS7000f. this is their web link. I am trying to get my iPhone and Macbook Air to cast to the TV via airplay or another method (app, web browser, etc). I can't figure out how to do that. Does the TV have bluetooth capabilities to link to the other devices? The app store on the TV also seems limited in terms of options that could be 'outside the box' ways to get video from other devices on the TV. Thanks in advance!

Help: Voice chat audio only works through one monitor

    Posted: 29 Nov 2020 10:52 AM PST

    Hi,

I'm currently experiencing what I feel is a really strange problem. So I've got my laptop connected to a monitor and can play audio from either whenever I feel like and they both work. But specifically for the voice chat of League of Legends on my laptop, I cannot hear the audio of other people talking and they can't seem to hear me either. When I change the output option to my monitor, the audio works again and so does the microphone now. I've gone through all the obvious settings like making sure the correct output is selected before hand etc but I'm truly baffled at this point.

Any help/ideas would be much appreciated
