Why Can't Video Be Upscaled With 100% Accuracy?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 06:44 PM PDT

I'm reading about NVIDIA AI upscaling. The concept is that it looks for an image/ frame at a higher resolution that would downscale to look like the image you currently are attempting to upscale and use that. Note that I believe this is for video, and not for video games. This seems like a really neat idea, but the thought occurred to me why we can't use this method with 100% accuracy and be able to upscale lower resolution flawlessly? If there is a finite number of pixels then there is a finite combination of said pixels, so there should only be one image at a higher resolution that would match the lower resolution image with 100% accuracy when put through a down sampling algorithm. But from my understanding I don't think it is 100%. So some uncertainty must be introduced somewhere. My thinking is maybe they use probability to cut down on time at the cost of accuracy? As the time to compute every combination of every frame may be really high. I don't know I'm not knowledgeable in computer stuff but I'm interested in probability so this piqued my interest.

Display module to run TFT over USB

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 05:01 PM PDT

My "google-fu" is fairly strong but since I'm outside my element here I turn to you/Reddit for help.

Currently, I'm building a small application which needs a display I want to run over USB from a computer, the display has to be 5.7" and have a resolution of 640x480(recommendations for vendors here are also appreciated).

There are no limitations on the outsize currently.

My question is, where should I really turn for displays powered over USB? Is there a board/module I could connect to a display using the 40pins and just have it run over USB, like the Adafruit HDMI Decoder or is this component very specific?

I also know of [lcdinfo.com](lcdinfo.com) who sells 4.3" USB Displays, but again, no the correct screen size for my application.

    Automatic password changer

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 09:33 PM PDT

When I was a kid, my dad had a work laptop. There was a small 9 or 10 digit display on it that changed at set intervals. The number on the display was the current password. (Either for the laptop, or for his work software or email, I'm not sure)

I was wondering if anybody else has seen one of these, or if there is a way to make something like that today?

What can you tell me about starting a small-scale local WISP?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 03:30 PM PDT

The big questions: Where do local WISPs get their internet connection - that is, who are they paying, and do big players like Comcast, Charter, and CenturyLink make deals with them? Also, what sorts of regulations exist around providing internet as a WISP (aside from the basics of radio spectrum regulations)?

Background: As a ham radio operator and networking nerd, I've enjoyed doing wireless network infrastructure installs at 5 different houses so far. The goals have been different - in a couple cases, I'm extending a LAN/internet connection to two cabins about a mile and a half away, and on the opposite side of a creek that has never been crossed with cable/fiber, and where there's no cell service. They're getting around 150mbps throughput on average, with virtually zero downtime over the past 2-3 years.

So, having had some experience building a few wireless networks, it seems like it'd be fun to help other people out with wireless backbone/distribution solutions. However, it seems like most of the time when that would be valuable, the rural home/farm/ski area/etc. owner probably doesn't have access to broadband internet at all, even at some single, hard-wired location. (If they do, then everything gets a lot simpler.) I'm sure you could try to broker some deals with their nearest neighbor who has broadband, etc. (surely against the neighbor's contract with their ISP), but it would be much better to be able to bring in a connection from a more legitimate, above-board source.

Hence the question, if I formed a business entity that could provide an internet connection to rural locations (aside from the complexity of leasing physical locations for repeater equipment and complying with FCC spectrum allocation rules), what regulatory hurdles exist to providing someone with an internet connection, and how do local WISPs get their own connection(s)?

Thanks for any thoughts you have on this!

    Security Cameras

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 07:34 PM PDT

I am looking for suggestions for security cameras.

    Requirements:

    <$1000

    1080p

    7 cameras

    Indoor and outdoor

Around 2TB of storage or cloud storage

Live view from monitor or mobile

I also want them to just plug into an outlet and stream to the monitor or mobile device wirelessly. If anyone could help, that would be amazing.

My phone as a hotspot does not provide the necessary upload and download speed according to Proctor U. Any ideas on how I could purchase internet temporarily? Would Verizon jetpack work? I don't have Verizon cellular plan though.

    PC power cable crackling

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 06:31 PM PDT

So I just bought a new gaming pc from pc specialist. And noticed as soon as I got it the power cable seemed weird, if I move it and it's plugged in no matter how gently, i will hear like electrical crackling from the power socket at the back and often it will go off. Usually the orange light goes off or sometimes the entire thing if it's on. I'm not very tech oriented I only know a few select things about pcs. I'm concerned this issue is going to damage my pc's components. What should I do? I'm reckoning it's a cheap power cable they've used? I'm not sure. The pc wasn't cheap. My monitor has the same cable and I have the same issues with the exact same noise, I just can't move either of them without this happening. Can someone shed some light on this? It's very unnerving.

Is this a good life hack for Computer WiFi?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 02:51 PM PDT

Hi, so I just came up with this idea. All computers can be connected to the router via Ethernet, but not all of them can do so wirelessly. So of course, you either have to do purchase a USB adapter (they usually suck with high latency due to protocol), or get a PCI module to install on the mobo if there is an available slot. However, I have also learned that routers or wireless APs got reasonably better antennas than any other computer device. Routers' signal are made to be strong enough to handle multiple devices and fight interference over huge distances and since it is its primary role, there are no power limitations to it.

So why can't I just grab a decent router, play with the settings to make it act as a repeater, and disable SSID broadcasting so no other devices but my PC can connect it to using a cable. This way I have changed the router's purpose into functioning as a WiFi antenna for my computer. The antennas of the router is stronger than any USB or PCI module. This way, I'll get better speeds, lower latency, superior signal compared to other devices, longer range, you name it!

Does this idea of mine work? or are there some complications to it? Am I better off with a module or with a router?

    Force exercise

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 11:43 AM PDT

Is there a way to be able to lock your computer till you go to the gym or do some sort of exercise? I got the idea after reading ready player one and I've been feeling kinda unhealthy spending more time then I should at a PC. You could probably achieve this by either tracking heart rate or location but I was checking whether anyone else had already done something like this.

    Change file size metadata?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 06:06 AM PDT

I saw this video that my friend sent me on discord that bypassed discords file size limit by changing the metadata to trick discord into thinking it was under the limit. I was wondering if anyone knew how to do this?

    Games stuttering every second

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 05:43 AM PDT

I'm suddenly experiencing stuttering every second, literally. Every second almost every game I have stutters. I've tried applying some things in some videos I've seen by changing configuration int he Nvidia control panel, but the stutters are still there. The same in every game I've tried them on (Kingdom Come: Deliverance, Skyrim and The Witcher 3): every second, even when being still, it stutters. What I don't understand is why, as it has started happening since around 5 days ago. Before that time, I've played those 3 games without a problem. I just installed again kingdom come and witcher 3 (I uninstalled them some months ago), but I installed Skyrim a month ago and have been playing it perfectly, but just 5 days ago it started doing that. I've reinstalled it. Nothing changes. What can I do?

I have Intel Core i7-6700HQ, GeForce GTX 960M and 8 Gb of RAM, if it's of any use.

Do infrared thermometers need to be pointed at the hed to work?

    Posted: 13 Jun 2020 05:39 AM PDT

With the new practice (where I am) of checking people's temperatures before they enter an establishment, I was curious as to whether infrared thermometers only check human body temperature accurately when pointed at the face/forehead.

I find it kind of uncomfortable having a gun-like laser pointed at my face, I know it's a minor inconvenience I'm just curious.

    EDIT: **head
