Do ssd's use a data structure like in programming to store data?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 12:13 AM PDT

I'm a computer science student, and after learning about data structures I've been curious about things like this.

Researching about ssd's have not lead me to read anything about how the data is stored other than from its circuitry. Like an SSD stores things in pages which are around 4kb, and then a thousand or so pages are stored in blocks. Is this a data structure or just a way to store data that's not considered a data structure?

    Strange noise on phone call

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 10:47 PM PDT

So I was on a phone call last week (mobile to landline) and in the middle of it both of us heard a weird noise, it sounded like someone took a microphone and rubbed/scratched it against something a few times. Definitely wasn't me or the person on the other end. Anyone else ever experience this? The only results I get when I try to Google it are lists of signs that your phone is tapped, and I'm pretty sure that's not what's going on. I was wearing headphones during the call, but didn't rub the mic.

I need help with a search of certain Televisions (sorry if this the wrong place to ask but I need answers and help in finding them, I don't know where to go for this)

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 09:01 PM PDT

I was having a discussion in a discord server about games that are built-in or programmed in the TV but none of then know what I'm talking about, they assume it might be a console that was built-in the TV like the Super Nintendo or PS2 built-in the TV. But I'm talking about TV's that had a game programmed in, there are some TV's out there that have games programmed in them that are accessible by going through the settings menu or some remotes that have a game button and use the remote to play.

I'm just hoping someone out there knows what I'm talking about, I've tried searching all over the internet for them but all I get are game consoles and modern TV's, the ones with games programmed in are old around the early 2000s, before Smart TV's came around. I would know because I used to have one but don't remember the model or brand of it.

"Cracking" the randomization algorithm in Minecraft

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 02:39 AM PDT

Is it possible to reverse engineer the minecraft dropper pseudo random algorithm?

It is already known that weak pseudo random algorithms such as xoroshiro128+ (used by google) can be easily "cracked". I found this interesting and I wondered if a similar algorithm could be used to "crack" the randomization of a minecraft dropper.

Does anyone know what randomization algorithm Minecraft uses? I'm assuming it's the default one in Java, however I am not experienced in many languages outside of python lol

The best and most affordable creative desktops?

    Posted: 30 Apr 2020 12:26 AM PDT

Preface: absolute tech noob here, looking to save for a desktop comp very soon after having owned a very tiny mac air for nearly 6 years now. (I know, it's been rough; it was bought for me during high school). Anything but a mac. Please.

Looking to get into using various adobe products; illustrator, photoshop, indesign etc. Casual gaming. Interested in all in ones, but if it's better value and allows for upgrading and flexibility later down the track, tower desktops seperate recommendations are welcome, please provide monitor recs.

General idea of my "uneducation" I understand absolutely 0 tech terms under specifications of products, so feel free to explain as I don't want to be an ignorant buyer who only buys something that looks pretty but also don't want to spend a pretty penny on something that claims x y z if I can get it cheaper.

    Thanks a lot folks.

    • not looking to build right now (might in the future but not something I'm looking at the moment, thanks)

Monitor won’t turn on and usb for the tower and motherboards don’t work.

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 10:57 PM PDT

This a new pc I had just built, the monitor won't turn on and the USB ports on the motherboard and the tower do not work either. All my fans are spinning, rgb ram is lit up, and the gpu fans are also spinning. I think the problem is the motherboard but I've read online that it could be the psu, but everything is lit up so I'm more leaning towards the motherboard as the problem. Any suggestions and help?

I am visually impaired and I am looking for the right screen for PC and console gaming.

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 10:29 PM PDT

Hello! I am an avid computer user and gamer, but I am also extremely visually handicapped and always have to use a large screen. Currently, I am using a 32 inch 1080p smart TV. It seems to be about the right size and it works well for me needing to be up close. Recently, my wife and I bought A 4K Toshiba Fire TV and I noticed a huge difference in quality. The clearness of the 4k along with the smoothness of the motion on that TV made it much easier for me to see. I'm not positive but I think the smoother motion has something to do with an increase in hz. I believe my TV has 60hz and this Fire TV must have 120 or 240hz. (Sorry I'm a little illiterate when it comes to this.)

I would love to find a new screen that provides the same level of motion smoothness for my PC and gaming needs. It would make things so much better. But the Fire TV model only goes down to 43 inches and the 32 inch model is only 720p. It seems like these days they only make 32 inch TVs only go up to 720p.

Would anyone know of any options that I may have? Are there any 32 inch screens with higher pixel and hz? Would 720p be a significant drop in quality from what I have now? Thank you for your help!

    Looking for a laptop

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 10:23 PM PDT

Hello, everyone, I have been looking into getting a new laptop for myself and I have found myself in a tight spot on which computer I should get. I'm looking for a device that can help me with school work, meaning I would like to multitask on the device. which is the main reason I'm buying it. But I would also like it to be lightweight and portable to work and school. I am also looking for a device I can do engage in light casual gaming such as installing an emulator. the two devices I'm currently looking at are the Dell Ispiron3593 and the Microsoft Surface go. I like the surface because I'm into drawing and I prefer writing my notes with my hands than typing them in class. If neither option is what you think I am open to recommendations. my budget for this laptop is just over $500. Thank you again for listening to my problem and helping me out.

What is the benifits of using Logitech Unifying receiver instead of Bluetooth?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 11:04 AM PDT

Update: will connecting via Bluetooth consume more battery of mouse or/and keyboard than using the logitech unifying receiver?

Assuming my home desktop has bluetooth, what would be the benifits of using Logitech Unifying receiver for connecting my keyboard/mouse instead of using Bluetooth? I have MX Master and ERGO K860.

Personally I prefer Bluetooth but that means the receiver dongle(s) would be kinda wasted... and I am not a gamer.

I can also get battery info of the mouse via Bluetooth while the same information through receiver dongle requires logitech software...

Your thought? If you have a logitech mouse and/or keyboard supports Bluetooth, would you connect them using the receiver dongle or bluetooth?

Can someone explain why does it seem so hard for Microsoft to come up with more than 4 (or 9!) simultaneous videos of participants in Teams?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 09:27 PM PDT

According to this popular feature request in their video conferencing app which has received thousands of votes, while there are other more popular alternatives in the market which do better. I understand that MS has lots more products which they need to prioritize and multiple levels of executive approvals to go through. Did I just answer my own question, or are there other less apparent factors?

Google Drive folder has always a loading symbol

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 07:14 PM PDT

I use the backup and synch from Google Drive in a folder in my desktop, but at least one of each folder has always that loading symbol, and I checked every other folder (some of them has the loading symbol as well) and every other file (every single one of the files has a upload complete symbol, no one has the loading icon). Is it a common error? Because I can't find it anywhere on FAQs or Google's support. I know that it seems a little bit pointless, but that symbol of incomplete bothers me so much.
Here is the link that shows the symbol: https://imgur.com/a/K2FAKOT

What's an annoying thing in Windows/MacOS that has been there _forever_ and you've never gotten used to?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 11:42 AM PDT

For me it's scroll bars that pop back to the beginning when you stray too far while scrolling. WHY can't it just stop at the last place you were at? Also the max/min buttons being right next to the close button so it's super-easy to accidentally close a window when you just want to minimize it, or vice-versa. The close button should be on the opposite side. MacOS/AmigaOS/Windows3.1 got this right the first time, back in the 80's.

Windows: is there a way to determine if a file has copied from one disk to another?

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 05:38 PM PDT

Something like md5 hash? or PGP keys? I have some movies I copied to an external drive but it said something during the copy process and I was really tired and I just clicked ok w/e. It was like 700gb of movies and tv. And I think it was only like 5 to 10 files. After 2 days of transferring I didn't care. But I'm wondering if there is a way to automatically determine which files are complete and transfered properly. I really don't want to have to manually check hundreds of videos.

Help with moving data over to a new computer

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 05:28 PM PDT

I'm not sure if this is the place to ask, but I'm buying a friend's old computer who has almost completely better specs than me (besides the GPU). Would I have any problems just cloning my harddrive onto his 1TB hard drive, then just putting it into his computer and installing the necessary drivers? Keep in mind, we have different parts and CPUs. If this does not work, what steps should I take to switch over? Also what problems might I have if my current hard drive has Windows 7 and he has Windows 10?

JPEG Metadata Manager? | Fully customize/ control all metadata

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 05:17 PM PDT

I'm looking for a tool of some sort which lets me precisely manage my jpg's metadata.
Sadly my image editing tools mainly Capture One and Photoshop both really suck at giving easy and full control over the exported metadata.

Usually there are tons of protected entries I can't remove or modify within the software or before the export.
Then with the settings, I can choose to include data which then lets ppl and search engines know information I don't want them to know, or I can remove all metadata which then saves too little data...

If anyone knows a good tool to easily take full control over a jpeg's metadata, I would be really grateful.

Thanks for your time and help!

Thought experiment on active noise cancellation.

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 05:03 PM PDT

Hi all! Just had a thought experiment pop into my head and thought I would verbalize it in hopes to find an answer to this. Here's the scenario: you have in ear (or small form factor) active noise canceling headphones in, then you have larger form factor active noise canceling headphones that you place over the top of those (completely encapsulating the smaller ones).

Let's say you have a constant hum that both these headphones can cancel effectively the same on the outside of your little audio ecosystem you just created. Would the inner pair recreate the sound that is happening on the outside?

The reason I had this thought experiment is the basics of how active noise cancellation works, creating the opposite of the sound wave and it cancels out. So the inner ear piece effectively could be catching a little bit of the opposite wave of what is outside? Then recreating that?

I'm 90% sure this is not how real life would play out, just curious on your thoughts on the thought experiment here!

    Website Self-Hosting Solution (Windows)

    Posted: 29 Apr 2020 07:43 PM PDT

Hello, I was looking for help with deciding the cheapest/best way to host a website on my PC without having to forward ports and without having a domain that is like, "example.com:8080".

Ideally, I am looking to have a normal-looking domain name that is serving a website from my computer behind an ISP cable modem. My ISP (rhymes with box) is blocking 80, and 443 as well as hiding/disabling the port forwarding you used to be able to do from the router, I don't even see the option in the app that the support website refers to.

I am picturing an application that runs on my computer (like a tunneling software) that serves from my local XAMP or Node setup from my Windows 10 computer.

It also could be using a service that provides near-instant code changes and automatically publishes as develop/test things. I really want to do more with Node/HTML/JavaScript and maybe a database service like (MySQL) or a NoSQL thing.

Your advice and tips are greatly appreciated! I have come to Reddit for many things. Love you guys! Now hit that downvote button lol.
