Cleaning my PC today, found a weird looking folder that I don't know the origin of

    Posted: 29 Aug 2020 04:31 AM PDT

Hey guys, how's it going, so anyway I found this strange folder in my Program Files x86 folder, called "Starth". In it was just this strange uninstall.exe without any information about it in its properties. I clicked on it, and it started doing the typical uninstall progressing blue rectangle .gif like with any installer. However, one of the lines of texts in the installer right above the progressing rectangle said "Gogo uninstaller". And then at the bottom it said "Nullsoft install system 3.0". I have no idea where this folder came from but it's been on my laptop since 8/21/2017 which was around the time I got my laptop. I don't know what used to be in the folder if only the uninstall.exe was left, but I want to know if you guys could provide any insight.

If my mom has an iPhone and wants to share her location with me so I can view it in a browser (not in an app/program), how do we do it?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 03:57 PM PDT

My mom has an iPhone. I have a Windows computer. She would like to share her location with me in a way that I can login to some site in a browser window and see where she is.

Would prefer to be able to check it in a browser, not have to download a program for it.

She wants only me to be able to see it, not any of her contacts, and not the public.

I do have an Apple account and found that I can login to the Apple website and view a map of my own devices but did not see how to add someone else's device to the map.

Is there an easy way to do this?

    Thanks.

    Device restarts automatically while charging

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 11:25 PM PDT

I have a samsung A20s which is around 2 months old. I always keep the battery between 20% to 80% manually without any apps. I just use reddit, instagram, snapchat, youtube and pubg thrice a week for 1 to 2 hours. Yesterday and today while charging it automatically restarted. The battery was no where near dying percentage. I use the original charger that comes with the phone(also i have never charged using any other charger because my family has micro usb chargers and my phone is usb c)and I have not installed any of those battery saving apps or anything. Is this a major issue and how can I solve this?

    I saw this tweet

What do they mean by framework in this situation?

    pairing a 1440p monitor with a 1080p monitor?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 11:31 AM PDT

I have a 1080p at the moment and my 1440p monitor is coming in two days. I have been trying to sell my 1080p monitor but no one wants to buy it, so I have decided to keep it and use it as a second monitor. But my main concern is that my 1080p monitor is going to bottleneck my 1440p in some way. I know that if you pair a 144hz monitor with a 60hz monitor the 60hz monitor is going to bottleneck the 144hz by making the frequency of the 144hz monitor 60h. Is it a good idea to use the two monitors side by side even though they have different resolutions. both of my monitors are 144hz but they have different resolutions.

In 2016, Akamai published the State of the Internet report. I've yet to find anything as definitive, but am looking for suggestions.

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 08:06 PM PDT

As the title, I've used the Akamai State of the Internet Q1 2016 report for several years, but have yet to find anything as definitive in terms of comparing the profile of internet speeds and prices segmented by country. The report is now several years old, and I'm looking for any suggestions on equivalent research that compares different nations. Any suggestions welcome!

Cell phone consistently loses service AFTER leaving grocery store

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 03:04 PM PDT

This is a bit of a weird one. After losing count of how many times this has happened I figured I would search for a subreddit that may give me an answer. if this is not the right place or you know of a better sub for this issue, please don't hesitate to tell me.

    Anyways, about the phone issue:

Roughly a year ago I switched service providers to Xfinity Mobile. I had Verizon for years but the price was just too high. When I switched I got a brand new Pixel 4. Absolutely no complaints about the service or the phone. The only issue I've had is that when I go to a particular grocery store near me, I lose service as soon as I leave; no 3G even. The way I fix this is by turning on airplane mode then turning it off to basically reset my cellular.

This happens nowhere else. While I'm in the store, I do not have WiFi on ever, and I have service consistently throughout the store while shopping. I also have full service before entering the store. It is only after I walk out the doors of the store that I completely lose service and have to do the airplane mode trick.

Any ideas what this could be?

How does this Microsoft Augmented Reality Projection work?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 04:56 PM PDT

    Here's a 5-min vid run-through and demo.

They're only using a few projectors and Kinect sensors, so no screens, glasses, or headsets.

How are they projecting the images such that they appear to be floating in mid-air, rather than just seen on a wall or surface?

For instance, at 0:10, the car appears to be literally on the table as a 3D object. It doesn't look like it's just a projection on the surface of the table. It even suspends in mid-air on its way down. How is that done?

Same with the plane at 4:55 and the globe at 2:47.

    This video has another example.

How are they doing this? Particularly the car and plane look a lot like they are literally sitting above the table or floating in thin air.

Isn't the image actually projected onto a surface (ex. the table, wall, floor), so how does it look like it's floating in mid-air?

This is their paper if you want to read more in-depth.

How can I know to what extent my employer can monitor what I do on the laptop they gave me?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 09:17 AM PDT

I'm an employee of a big technology firm. When I was hired, I was given an HP laptop with Windows 10 on it. I seem to have quasi-administrator permissions: so far, I was able to install any program I wanted to (I avoided illegal/cracked stuff obviously), launch regedit etc. but at the same time I do not have complete control of the machine; for instance, I cannot open ports in the system firewall, disable the antivirus, or edit some key settings.

I may be a bit paranoid, but I have no reason not to believe that they may be monitoring which programs I'm running at any moment, which websites I'm visiting (even if I'm not connecting to the internet through my employer's network or VPN), what's on my screen or even what I'm typing with the keyboard.

I guess in that case they would be using proprietary software that wouldn't be recognized from an anti-malware scan.

Is there a way to know with precision how much privacy can I expect on my work laptop?

Will the frost buildup from computer duster ruin PC components?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 01:46 PM PDT

I noticed it when I was cleaning my heat syncs. If there is a risk of damage if that happens? I'm leaving it unplugged for the next hour to play it safe.

    24-inch 1440p Monitors - Why so Rare?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 01:42 PM PDT

    I really want a 24-inch monitor...

    144hz+ Refresh Rate 1ms Response Time 2560x1440

Why is that so hard to find? The only one I've been able to find is a Dell that's over 3 years old

Is there any better option for what I'm looking for?

Is there a technology that can use multiple videos to re-create a composite scene? (e.g. Re-create the Kenosha protest incident with the dozens of available videos)?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 09:53 AM PDT

Looking for a survey of technologies/software in use or being developed that take videos to create a three dimensional and temporal representation of a highly recorded scene. An obvious application being the incidents occurring during protests, and the ability to re-create events for court of laws.

    WiFi dual band extender means...?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 01:07 PM PDT

    Hopefully a simple question.

If I get a WiFi extender that says it is "dual band" and I have 5G WiFi in my home - does the label mean that my extender can get 5G and 2.4 into my room for use?

Reason I am asking: my HP printer will not connect to the 5G network.

How can I make my dual monitors for my desktop switch between using the desktop and my work laptop as the input + making a triple extended display once my laptop is connected?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 04:53 AM PDT

Hey everyone! I have a desktop with a GTX1080 that currently has two 27inch monitors hooked up to it. I also have a laptop that I use for work. The laptop is a dell latitude 7400.

Is there a way to have my dual monitors switch between displaying the input of my desktop to displaying the laptop as the input without have to unplug and replug in all the cables everytime?

Furthermore, I'm wondering if this is possible — once my laptop is being used as the input for the display, can I make a triple screen setup where I can drag things from my laptop across to the two other screens? If so how can I do this and what do I need?

Currently I have one of these:

    https://www.startech.com/Cards-Adapters/Laptop-docking-stations/usb-c-multiport-adapter~DKT30CSDHPD

    If it makes a difference.

Thank you so much in advance. If anyone can help me figure this out I would be so grateful!

Do I need to root my phone before installing Lineage OS 17?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 04:55 AM PDT

    I have a Motorola G5S plus (sanders_n).

Y'all might know the recent Lineage OS 17 that is based on Android 10, released for this phone.

I am doing this all for the first time so don't know a lot about it. But, do I need to root my phone before installing it?

Are there OS limitations or factors that make Linux or Mac OS worse for playing games in a technical sense?

    Posted: 28 Aug 2020 07:52 AM PDT

I recognize that it's not cost effective to develop games for Linux or Mac because of the smaller userbase, but if that wasn't a factor, could games be developed that are just as performant and visually pleasing as they are on a PC with the same hardware (and without needing to modify the underlying operating system)?
