Using a Raspberry Pi as a router

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 09:05 PM PDT

I originally posted this in a raspberry pi related subreddit, but it was removed because it isn't a current project, though it may soon become one. Some clarification, I am an avid, fairly in depth Linux user for 12 years, and have tinkered with the Pi since the first version, some Pine boards, etc, so I am not entirely unprepared in terms of familiarity. That said, I trust others know far better than I, especially when the consensus I can find seems to warn against what I am trying to do.

I was thinking of using the RPi as a router for my network. From my perspective, it seems well suited to the task. However, in my searches, I have found that it is generally considered a bad idea.

I can think of several reasons why this may be the case:

    1. The wifi antennae isn't up to the task. In my opinion, this would depend on how large of an area you are trying to cover, and how many devices. This is a consideration for any router, and while it may be a bad idea if not up to your needs, I don't see it as a deal breaker. Even in situations where it is an issue, decent USB antennae are quite cheap these days and should certainly fix this problem, no?
    2. The throughput isn't enough for a network. My thoughts on this are the same as the above.
    3. Configuration is too much of a hassle to be worth it, and you will likely be far less secure. I could well be wrong, but I would expect an up to date RPi, running pihole, a vpn, locked down with iptables, fail2ban, and maybe apparmour, etc, to be as secure as a 'normal' router, especially when you consider the wider userbase, and how terrible the defaults on routers from ISP's can be.
    4. Though my information on this is a few years out of date, I recall the Pi having a problem with powering some external drives on their USB3 ports. Is this still an issue, and if so, would it be more of an issue with a wifi antennae as well? Are there any other such issues I should be aware of with this project?

With those points out of the way, would it really be that bad for a moderately knowledgable Linux user to use one of these as a router, am I being too ambitious, am I missing a glaring flaw?

    Re-bind extra keyboard buttons?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 09:21 PM PDT

I recently bought a new PC, and with it came a keyboard that has extra shortcut buttons on either side. Most of the buttons do things like pause/play or change volume, however two of the buttons act as shortcuts for opening apps.

These two buttons appear to open whatever app I have set as my default browser and music player, and I was curious how I might be able to bind these buttons to open other things, not just browsers or music players.

So my huawei p30 lite has started to slow down today?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 01:35 PM PDT

2 days ago i did an optimization and it was at 100% and throghout it's use time it never dropped below 97. A few hours ago i noticed that the phone was a bit laggy and kinda slow, so i went into optimisation and noticed my phone is only 60% optimized.

Why did this happen and how can i fix this?

I tried to restart but that didn't work, i have enough free space, what could've caused this?

A quick question about USB-C ports and controllers

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 05:15 PM PDT

Hi! Thanks for reading this, here's my query: I have a computer with 4 USB-A ports and 2 USB-C ports (one USB 3.1 controller for the A, one USB 3.1 controller for the C), soon I'll be adding a second display, it will be using a displayport connection, so I plan on using one of my USB-C ports for a USB-C to displayport cable, the only problem is I'm currently using both ports currently, and this is where my question regarding the controller comes into play.

One of my C ports is connected to a USB hub, the other is connected to my Elgato CamLink, so if I do use one of my C ports for a displayport cable I'd have to connect the camlink to the hub connected to the other C port. I'm a bit of an idiot, so I don't know, but would my CamLink lose bandwith if it were connected to the hub rather than directly to a port of its own, or would it make no difference because it would all be going through the same controller and therefore the bandwith difference would be non-existant?

Sorry if this is poorly worded, as I said, I'm a bit of a n00b with this stuff, was hoping you guys might be able to help me out though, thank you! :)

Why does my home internet have so many outages, while my wireless phone network never seems to have outages?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 04:39 PM PDT

As the title says, I was wondering what the differences are between home internet and wireless phone networks. Both services offer internet but why does my home internet have so many outages and issues where my cell phone does not?

    New Peripherals help

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 02:04 PM PDT

I am looking for some new peripherals, but I don't know which ones to choose. I have the budget to get 2 of the 3 things I want. My HD audio cable is broken, so I have no way of using audio thru my PC, I mainly use my phone (discord and teamspeak). My mouse is a generic logitech. And my keyboard is a redragon, which is actually not that bad. So should I get a new mouse and keyboard, mouse and mic, or mic and keyboard? I already have the selections for each one ready. Mouse: Glorious Model D- Keyboard: HyperX Alloy Origins Core Mic: Maono Mic (Which is actually a very solid mic for streaming and vc)

Is there a way I can access Windows Screen Savers (the old ones) and the music player animations on mac?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 11:18 AM PDT

For the sake of nostalgia, I'd really like to be able to incorporate the screensavers windows XP used to have. And the music player animations, they were so trippy! Is there a way I can access either (without bootcamp)?

How to add sections into video progress bar?

    Posted: 12 Aug 2020 09:55 AM PDT

Similiar to new youtube feature, where a long video is broken into multiple section each covering a seprate topic. These topics could be viewed by scolling on video progress bar.

I have personally experianced these, years ago, with pirated anime and porn video.

Anime openings, ending, flashback were pointed. Similiary diffrent positions were marked in porn.

How do I do same to my video.

Is there a way to download youtube video with chapter/sections marked?

    Thanks in advance.
