How did facebook know what brand of ice cream I bought today even though I paid in cash?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 11:42 PM PDT

I never buy ice cream. Today I saw some in the store and decided I would buy some. I paid in cash and did not use a membership card. I have never seen an add for ice cream on facebook before either, but when I was on facebook a moment ago I was shown an ad for the same brand and type of ice cream that I bought at the store.

I do not have the facebook app installed on my phone nor was it running in my phone browser. I do have the instagram app installed, but I did not have it launched or running in the background, and I make sure to log out each time I close the app as to not remain logged in.

I am very confused as to how facebook could have been aware of this purchase with apparently no means of connection. Is there a way for an app that is not actively running on a current gen iPhone to communicate with a point of sale system?

Have you heard of Let's Encrypt?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 09:58 PM PDT

I'm at home and I go the the website of my employer's company. I noticed there is a padlock and the url includes https. I never installed a SSL certificate so I'm confused. (We are a small company so I'm kind of responsible for technology stuff.)

I get on chat with Hostgator and they weren't able to help. Hostgator rep gave me the url of our website without the https (just http). So, on the same browser, I had http/www.example.com and https/www.example.com

I clicked on the padlock and apparently the certificate is issued by Let's Encrypt.

Does this mean all the internetting that I'm doing from home is safe?

Thank you, thank you, thank you, dear Technology wizards!

How to get my E-Mail back?

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 04:27 AM PDT

    Soo, I can't access my E-Mail and I don't remember the password.

Backstory: My phone with my E-Mail broke, the screen is completely black, and on my new Phone, I don't have this E-Mail yet.

Now, if I want to log into my E-Mail, Google asks what password I could remember and then sends a mail to my broken phone.

(Repairing my phone won't work, since it costs 200$ and it's just not worth it.)

I asked Google Support, but they were no help.

A few hours ago I found a very very old Samsung Galaxy S4 with the "lost" E-Mail and I went into Gmail

to try and recover said E-Mail. When I pressed "Manage Google Account" then it said "Complete the registration to continue" and I again have to type in a password I could remember for this E-Mail.

I tried to access my lost E-Mail from my current phone (that I use now too), so that Google sends a "reset password Mail" to my lost E-Mail address, but that won't work too.

Is it even possible to get my E-Mail address back?

    Thanks in advance :)

Why is time-based dark theme not universal?

    Posted: 14 Jul 2020 02:16 AM PDT

It seems to me like a basic functionality of using any app should include the automatic switching of the theme from light to dark and back to light in the morning. Why should I have to choose between being blinded by the light theme when I open an app at night, or seeing my own reflection better than the text when I open an app during the day?

Is it more than trivial to program automatic theme changing? I have one app that changes the theme based on a schedule and one that adjusts the theme based on ambient light.

Why were DTMF tones audible on landline telephones?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 12:49 PM PDT

When pressing the keys, why were the tones audible rather than being sent silently? Was it simply to give feedback to the user, or was there another reason?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 11:57 PM PDT

A Reddit user u/Shannon_Q_Cimino whose account was created today created a post with the url below as the title and a bunch of comments i think with a similar url but ended with u/ some persons username and I was tagged as one of those people. Anyone know what this is?

Weirdly, i can't find it anymore and I think the account is now deleted? I had also made the stupid mistake of replying to the weird comment that had my user tagged before deleting the reply when I thought something was weird, can they do anything, am I fine?

Thinking of getting a new phone, but what should I buy?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 09:34 PM PDT

I mostly use my phone to watch videos, read online, text and call, and play games a few mobile games here and there. I don't want to spend too much on a phone for these reasons, so my upper budget would be around $400 to $500

I could care less if my phone can take professional level photos or not, and most flagship phones price I feel come from the camera. That's why I was thinking if I should just get a "gaming" phone. I looked at a few of them, but I don't know anything about the company that makes them.

Should I get a Chinese gaming phone? If not, what other gaming phones could I consider? or should I just get a Samsung Galaxy S9 with StraightTalk for $400?

My platform of choice is Android btw, I just really do not like Apple and its brand.

Is it possible to make a second monitor (over WiFi )for PC using Raspberry?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 08:42 PM PDT

Hi everyone, It's been a childhood dream of mine to have a iron man like wireless lightweight tablet. As I grew, I understood that it seems a bit far fetched.

But then I got another idea. It was pretty simple. The idea was- Making a touch screen tablet like device that would have minimal things(touch screen, ability to share the PC screen, sound) just to connect to a PC over WiFi & gain full control of it so that I can get a lot of computing power without much weight.

The easiest route to go is to buy a tablet & use it like this. I currently have one(from 2013) but it's kinda bulky & has a lot more function than I would actually need.

So is it possible to do with a raspberry??

Edit: The idea seemed posssible to me after seeing this project recently.

WG3526 cell router stuck in NAT type 3

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 08:22 PM PDT

I'm decently tech savvy but ever since my family moved to the woods and got a cell router I have not been able to host private servers or connect to them in games on my Xbox. I have tried to use the interface to set up port forwarding and attempted to activate UPnP but it still has not opened my NAT type or seemingly changed anything about the network. Curious if anyone else has experience with this router and has suggestions on how to fix this problem I would really appreciate it! If you need any more information about the device and it's interface just let me know.

Can someone tell me how to get my tv to read a usb drive?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 04:19 PM PDT

So I have googled this a couple times, tried the suggestions and still no luck. I have a tv series on DVD that I transferred onto my computer and then I put on a flash drive so I don't have to carry the whole box set around with me. I am wanting to just plug the flash drive into a tv via the USB port to watch the videos. I have a TCL tv if that matters . Anyway I have formatted the flash drive to exFAT, I have tried a 3.0 and a 2.0 flash drive both With luck. That's all I could find on the internet to try so now I'm lost. The tv just doesn't even recognize that a usb is plugged in. Are there any easy fixes for this or can someone link me to a specific flash drive I need to buy?

    what laptop to buy?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 07:48 PM PDT

    Hey everyone,

so I have a surface book and I love it to pieces, but I spilled water on it about 3 years ago and certain keys haven't been working since. This wasn't a problem in high school of course since l would just use a USB Keyboard at home and a Chromebook at school. It only became a problem once l got to college and had to carry it around with me, including to class. Now, on my 19th birthday, I've asked my Dad for a new laptop and suggested a surface laptop 3 at $799.I believe this to be a good choice since I already have a surface book, and the price isn't too bad. However, he is very stubborn and believes there is a better option, and suggests I buy a MacBook for $1000. I'm wary of this option because all of my devices so far have been android, so l told him l would use a MacBook on the condition that I would also eventually get an iPhone. Does anyone have any better suggestions??

    Thank you,

    op

What is the purpose of this site, is it dangerous?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 07:39 PM PDT

    https://youtu.be/rpwqoep6h5U

Obviously it's a YouTube link, but it advertises a website. The bizarre thing is it's an unlisted video. Now, assume I know someone who signed up for it. The only credentials it asks for are a name and e-mail address. As a word of caution I had this person change all of his passwords, change the e-mail addresses associated with all of his accounts, even delete his Paypal account for now, as an extra step even had him lock his credit reports from all 3 bureaus. Considering he accessed the site with an iPhone it is very unlikely there was any malware or spyware installed on his device. I'm hoping all those changes keep him safe, but what exactly is the intended goal of this website?

Is there is a way to go back to the home screen automatically on a laptop with a Heimlink security camera?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 02:09 PM PDT

    Hi, people on the internet,

I was just wondering if there is a way to go back to the home screen automatically on a laptop with a security camera? I have a heimlink security camera, and I tested that if it detects motion, it sends out a notification. Is there a way to use that advantage and make some sort of code that sends out the signal to my computer. which allows the laptop to somehow register the signal and go back to the homescreen automatically?

    Looking forward to this!

Why don't more SD manufacturers make different capacities, like 400GB?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 11:33 AM PDT

So I used to think that unless you had a traditional size (32,64,128,etc) then it was a waste. Can someone explain why it doesn't happen more often? Sandisk made a 400GB microSD cards and that's probably the only one I've seen.

Internet stops working when I play a game

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 01:29 PM PDT

    Hello everyone,

So I've been facing this issue frequently. Whenever I launch Apex Legends, internet goes out, not only on my laptop, but on all other devices. And I get under my wifi name, "not connected" . After closing the game, few seconds and it works again.

Not to mention that also this problem happens, not only when I play games, not even if I'm using my laptop. Just randomly.

However this will happen every time I launch the game. If I'm lucky enough, I can join a match, but get disconnected afterwards.

Could someone please tell wth is going on? It's really annoying.

My ISP told me that this must be an internal issue with cable wiring, since there's no problem with my landline copper lines.

    this is the config:

Can I use a WiFi extender for a smartphone hotspot?

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 11:49 AM PDT

Is it possible to use a Wifi extender (my one is the D-Link DAP-1325) to amplify the signal coming from a smartphone hotspot (using mobile data) and not an actual router? So, I'd like to turn on the hotspot on my phone and connect the extender to the phone so that I can connect to it with other phones, laptops tablets etc. Could this work?

I'm trying to reinstall windows and wipe clean an acer aspire 5733z but I cant get anything to happen please help

    Posted: 13 Jul 2020 11:02 AM PDT

So I'm trying to make use of an old laptop my room mate gave to me. Now they havent used it in 4 years so they cant remember their password. So I figured I would boot from my windows install cd like I always do so I set cdrom at the top of the boot priority order list in BIOS, save and restart and it just starts normally- loading to the sign in screen...

when I cant start up a few times it asks me if i want to trouble shoot windows so i go through the menus and select reset windows (which deletes all data and initiates a fresh install) however when i reach the screen saying to insert the usb or cd nothing happens. i hear & feel the cd drive working and the cd spinning but nothing happens...

ive read about disabling uefi but these options arent there in BIOS. youre only able to enable or disable quiet boot, network boot, f12 boot menu, d2d recovery, sata mode. you can change the boot device priority, and set supervisor, user and hdd passwords. no other options are in BIOS
