ProctorU proctor removed one of my personal chrome extensions?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 02:03 PM PDT

Hi! I recently took a test for school and had to use ProctorU. The proctor removed Honey (a couponing extension) from my browser and didn't tell me why. I was wondering why they might do that, and if it's in their right to do that. Thanks in advance.

Buying a graphics tablet for art purposes, thinking about a USB 3.0 > HDMI Converter but concerned about image degradation?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 07:45 PM PDT

    Hello!

Please excuse me if this is not the right place to post this.

I am an amateur artist looking to invest in my first graphics tablet. https://www.amazon.com/Wacom-Drawing-Graphic-Pressure-Levels-DTK2260K0A/dp/B07TR7YQ8Y/ref=sr_1_1?dchild=1&keywords=contiq+22%5C&qid=1600482963&sr=8-1

The laptop I have is powerful enough to run my painting program, so I initially planned to keep it. That is, until I realized that the graphics tablet would need an HDMI port and USB 3.0 port to properly connect to my laptop. My laptop has 2 USB 3.0 ports rather than one HDMI and one USB 3.0.

    I have two options:

    1. Buy a new laptop with the ports that I need.
    2. Buy a USB 3.0 > HDMI converter cable: https://www.amazon.com/Plugable-Graphics-Multiple-Monitors-2560x1440/dp/B01C6HBJOA/ref=sr_1_3?dchild=1&keywords=usb+3.0+to+hdmi&qid=1600483186&sr=8-3

I am hesitant about the first option because I still have my other laptop and buying another is another big investment. I am more partial to the second option, but I consulted my brother, who stated that having a converter cable would degrade the image quality. As an artist, image quality is of paramount importance to me, so any degradation of the image on the laptop's actual display would be detrimental for my purposes.

What would you guys suggest for my problem here?

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi guys.

I am curious as if whether it would be possible/feasible to install magnetic locks on my front door allowing me to remotely unlock/lock it at will. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

Long Ethernet Cable -- Switch, Move Router, what's best choice?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 02:33 PM PDT

I bought an older house about 6 months ago and didn't realize there was only a single ethernet port, and it's in the pantry (I know). Anyway, the router is in there, and I ran a 100 foot ethernet cable (up walls, around doors, on the ceiling) to my PS4 in the family room, concealing the cable pretty well. It works great, frankly. But now I've realized I need to hardwire my laptop in yet another room, too. Which method would best serve me?

    1) Buy a gigabit ethernet switch, place it behind the PS4, and run another 50ft ethernet cable from the switch to my laptop in the next room

    2) Use my existing 100ft ethernet cable to move the router to the PS4, and then run a 50ft cable directly from the router to the laptop

    3) Run a second 100ft cable from the router in its current spot to the laptop

I game and watch TV on the PS4, will only be watching videos and the occasional video chat on my laptop, it's not a gaming laptop. But the WiFi speed is not high enough to use it as intended. Thanks!

    Mapping from the contact form

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 12:20 PM PDT

I'm trying to improve the workflow at my work and I was wondering if anyone had any recommendations on ways to map automatically from a form response spreadsheet/database? I have background in GIS but I have no idea how to link the form, database, and map together. Currently, Google Sheets and Maps are being used, so I don't know if I can automate the system. Is Geosheets the way to go?

    To elaborate:
    1. You fill out a form on the website, and also put your address
    2. Information gets added to a database of addresses.
    3. Address gets geocoded and shows up on a map on the front-end
    4. The map auto-updates, say once a day, so it shows the most recent sign-ups as well

I'm hoping that the database can be then used for additional things, like emailing newsletters etc.

    Mobile routers

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 11:23 AM PDT

So them devices you put a SIM card in with an internet plan and it acts as a mobile router and gives you wifi whenever and wherever...

Are they actually worth it? What's the advantage of using WIFI than 4G if I could just use my phone as a source of internet?

Let's say I connect it to a laptop and use it to, idk, browse reddit for an hour. Does it consume more or less data than if I connected my phone to the laptop?

Are there different devices that could do the job better? Many thanks! I'm just really confused as to how they work and let me tell you, for once google doesn't want to tell me shit!

Facebook Portal or Amazon Echo Show for elderly person?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 09:38 AM PDT

This is for my mother, who is 81, has zero experience with tech, gets confused easily and needs something ultra simple to use.

    Essential:

    • Always on
    • Can answer video calls by touching the screen
    • Can make video calls by very simple voice instruction or ideally having an on-screen 'speed dial'

    Highly desirable:

    • Option to auto-answer incoming video calls from a nominated contact (so if I call and she doesn't answer, it will automatically connect anyway)
    • On screen reminders that can be input remotely (eg. "have you taken your medicine this morning?")

    Nice bonuses:

    • Displays photos that can be uploaded by others
    • Dual clock display (for two time zones)

Seems like the Facebook Portal 8" or the Amazon Echo Show 8 might be the best options. If you've used either or both of these devices, which would be best for her do you think? TIA!

(not interested in an ipad or smartphone skins or apps or whatever. she really won't be able to cope with those)

Best device to expand USB ports on a gaming laptop?

    Posted: 18 Sep 2020 09:01 AM PDT

I have a modern gaming laptop with only 3 USB ports, and I need to connect: - Mechanical keyboard - Mouse - Wireless headset - Cooling fan - External SSD What is the best option to expand my USB ports? I was thinking to get a USB hub, but a have questions:

    • Is it safe for my laptop or devices to force multiple devices to use the same port?
    • Will my laptop work properly?
    • How will the power distribution affect the performance of the devices I want to connect? (all my devices, except for the SSD, have RGB lighting).
    • What USB hub should I buy. I have read that powered USB hubs are the best option.

    Thank you guys in advance.
