Saving all passwords in a password protected word document, and then keeping that word document in my personal hard drive. How safe is it?

Circumventing internet speed requirement via fake speed test.

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 02:49 PM PDT

Is there any way to fake internet speed tests? My job has all been moved offsite and we were given laptops to continue to do our work remotely. Some of our clients are requiring a 25mbps internet connection and my apartment connection can only muster about 15 as there are a zillion devices on it. I've been running the remote software used and everything works fine at 15mbps (I'm just taking phone calls), but if I say I want the 25mbps contracts, I'll have to do a screen share and then they'll tell me to go to speedtest or fast.com to actually watch me run the test and I'm just wondering if there's a way to get around this.

Alternatively, can I force my connection to just dominate everyone else's in the apartment complex for about five minutes while I do the test?

Why can micro SD cards store mostly media files and not most apps?

What is it that is different between a phone's inbuilt storage and an SD card that causes this?

13inch Macbook Pro vs 21.5inch iMac

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 10:15 PM PDT

I just graduated college and I'm planning on going to go to grad school within the next two-three years, so I'm looking to upgrade my current situation. I currently own the Early 2015 MacBook Pro Retina Base model:

    2.7 GHz Dual-Core Intel Core i5,

    8GB RAM

    121GB storage

Intel Iris Graphics 6100 1536 MB

It works perfectly fine (although the storage has become a problem for me in the past); however, it's in need of a new battery, which isn't a problem to get. Nonetheless, I've been thinking about upgrading and I have a few options. Either I would keep my current laptop and get the 21.5‑inch iMac with Retina 4K display.

    • 3.6GHz quad-core 8th-generation Intel Core i3 processor
    • 16GB DDR4 memory
    • Radeon Pro 555X with 2GB of GDDR5 memory
    • 1TB Fusion Drive storage or 256GB SSD (don't know which one would be better)

This price comes out to $1499, which is my max. I'm looking for a desktop in order to play games (mainly the Sims.. honestly only the Sims and I want to download custom content) and schoolwork whenever the time comes. However, I could also go for a newer MBP and just hook it up to a desktop screen in order to play it my game (but then the number of battery cycles come into play compared to an iMac, whose battery I wouldn't have to eventually replace). I was looking at the 13-inch MacBook Pro

    • 1.4GHz quad‑core 8th‑generation Intel Core i5 processor, Turbo Boost up to 3.9GHz
    • 8GB 2133MHz LPDDR3 memory
    • 512GB SSD storage
    • 13-inch Retina display with True Tone
    • Intel Iris Plus Graphics 645
    • Two Thunderbolt 3 ports

or I could go with the 16GB memory, but it would leave me with 256GB storage. They're the same price of $1499, so all options would cost me the same price. But with this option, it would allow me to sell my current MBP or give it to my boyfriend since he's in need of a computer. I'm in no rush to choose, but I do want to start looking, I'm just not sure what the smartest decision would be.

    4k blu ray player freezing

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 06:20 PM PDT

Hello, I understand this is an old post but im hoping someone can help me here.

For the past year I have been experiencing freezing/pixelation/artifact issues with my previous 4k player a Panasonic DMP-UB700EBK and my newly bought today LGUBK90.

    let me rewind abit.

I first started having this issue with my first Panasonic OLED and also as mentioned DMP-UB700EBK player, it happened on both 4k and blu ray discs occasionally. I would be watching a movie and it would suddenly freeze with green and purple artifacts, sometimes skip, often not. I knew it was the player because the timer that displayed on front of the player would freeze also. Replaced the HDMI cable too to be sure but still had issues

Fast forwarded to now, my previous OLED had an issue so I have sinced replaced it with a LG CX model. Tried my DMP-UB700EBK a few days ago and two days in a row a had issues again. Specifically with the blu ray arrow release of the game it froze on the same timestamp 3 times in a row with artifacts, after finally working on the 4th time. The next day I was watching a blu ray copy of Zodiac and randomly saw a purple bar of pixelation/artifact, I rewound the movie and the purple artifact/glitch appeared as a blip.

So I decided to bite the bullet and buy a new player, the LGUBK90 which arrived today and im still having problems, I actually bumped into one again tonight! I watched the 4k disc version of Dont Look Now and it froze with artifacts...

Does anybody know what the hell is going on? Am I just having bad luck with these players? Should I just exchange the player? Im so frustrated its unreal, any support would be appreciated

    Many thanks

Mount SATA Drive to MacBook Pro?

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 09:39 PM PDT

I'm trying to mount an old SATA hard drive to my Mac, and I've tried two different adapters and neither one works.

The drive is a Western Digital WD20EADS (https://www.newegg.com/western-digital-wd-green-wd20eads-2tb/p/N82E16822136344) and I want to connect it to a 2017 MacBook Pro.

    Thanks in advance!

Need new TV but prefer basic "dumb" TV with a separate ROKU box. Do they exist?

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 05:51 AM PDT

I had posted previously about wanting a new 65 inch TV. I want to get rid of cable totally but my husband prefers to have a "monitor" and then a separate streaming device. Less hassle (ads, updates, etc) and he thinks they spy on us. Who knows, maybe they do. I currently have an old 50 inch with a ROKU box. I definitely need 65 in. and no bigger or smaller due to where it will be going. The 50 is so small for the room that it sucks. Bigger than 65 inch won't fit. The room is full of windows so need something good for glare. Does a "dumb" 65 inch TV still exist?

Looking for a good Bluetooth receiver without a battery

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 03:59 PM PDT

I'm looking to buy a Bluetooth receiver for my parents to plug into their "dumb" in built speakers at home (UK). The problem is it seems most on Amazon have a battery, and I'm looking for one which is just mains powered. I have thought about getting an echo but they're very anti smart speaker so I think that's probably a dead end, unless there are any other small Devices that can stream music from online

HDMI Splitter/Switch - Matrix or no?

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 03:49 PM PDT

My family has 2 PCs on the same desk and we would like to upgrade to a 3 or 4 monitor setup. We would like both PCs to be able to use all of the screens but don't want to have to reconnect a bunch of HDMI cables each time we switch computers.

So I am looking to buy an HDMI splitter/switch 2x4 (2 Inputs and 4 outputs). I need the 4 monitors to run as extended displays for multitasking (not mirrored displays). Does this mean the splitter needs to have matrix capability? Or is that only if I want to display both inputs on different combinations of screens simultaneously? The descriptions on amazon are hard to understand. Thank you for your help.

Will there be cheap but good quality Chinese copies of video cards, CPUs and RAMs?

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 02:56 PM PDT

Is there a way China could obtain the technology and massively produce the same products for a lot lower price (since we are mostly paying for the new technology and not the actual costs of the production)?

I know there are Chinese copies of video cards but those are not quality products, in fact quality isn't even the biggest problem but the fact that the product is not as advertised.

    Sprint + TMobil Service Questions?

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 10:30 AM PDT

Been on sprint for years and didn't like the service quality, especially in more rural areas.

Was considering jumping ship for verizon, but now that tmobile and sprint have merged to provide better service, I'm unsure.

Can anyone speak to the improved or changed quality of their wireless service (mostly concerned with data outside of cities) post merger? or is it too early to say?

    PC information to PHP application

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 09:27 AM PDT

Is there an application or script that simply takes your PC information and shoots it to a PHP API of your choosing? I have a website I'm building and I want to be able to allow IT to install a program that will send the info for their computers to the script so that it can be added as a new asset with serial, HD size, Memory and so on.

To be clear, I am NOT looking for an asset manager application. I already am building one and need some way for a PC to report itself to the IT department of my script online.

M.2 Key A or E only using USB

    Posted: 09 Sep 2020 09:11 AM PDT

I am working on a board design that utilizes the Raspberry Pi Compute Module and an Intel AX200 wifi card.

The AX200 has PCIe and USB interface, but the Pi only has USB, so my first question is whether or not the WiFi card will actually work here. Can I use this card over USB only, or do both need to be connected?

My second question has to do with connecting the sockets. I found this pinout diagram for the M.2 Key A or Key E protocol that the AX200 requires. Only the first seven pins are used for USB; however, there are some additional pins I think I may need to connect:

    • Ground: 18, 33, 39, 45, 51, 57, 63, 69, and 75 (not counting the one within the USB section)
    • 3.3v: 72, 74 (again not counting the USB section)
    • COEX: 44, 46, 48
    • Additional lanes for PCIe/other systems

My guess is that I will need to connect all of the ground and 3.3v pins to power, the COEX pins will bee needed for antennas, and the PCIe connections can be ignored since I won't be using them, but I want to check to make sure this is correct.
