    Studio Headphones vs Surround Headsets

    Posted: 06 Jul 2020 02:39 AM PDT

I'm currently looking around for some new headphones as my current one is almost a decade old and really falling apart (physically, that is)

The thing is, I'm not sure at all which type of headphones to buy. I play both games and listen to a lot of music, so picking between a good standalone headphone like the Audio-Technica ATH-M-series or a gaming headset like the Steelseries has gotten me a bit confused.

While dedicated headphones often boast much better audio quality, they're not exactly built with any games in mind, so as far as I'm aware, they don't have any form of Surround built in. And while I would like the 5.1/7.1 surround a gaming headset offers, I don't know how relevant this tech even REALLY is nowadays, especially with the often fake 'real' surround you could find in the past decade. As an aside, they also practically all come with a microphone built in, which is not what I want - I already have a very solid dedicated microphone in that regard, so it'd just be in the way. Even detachable it just feels like a waste of plastic because I'd likely never re-attach it.

Perhaps there's a good middle-ground to be found somewhere? Or should I really just go for an ATH-M and forego the hype around surround?

Switch > Hub? What should I look for in a Switch?

    Posted: 06 Jul 2020 01:07 AM PDT

Hey guys, we have a Wi-Fi router in the house but only one of its Ethernet ports provide an internet connection. So my brother suggested that we use that port to connect to a switcher with several more ports so all of our desktop computers can connect via Ethernet.

I've been reading and I guess a Switch better than a Hub, but what exactly should I look for in a Switch? Me and my two brothers will be playing online games and stream, so I would like to get a Switch that will be able to handle this without lag (not sure if a Switch is responsible for this, correct me if im wrong). Thank you in advance!!!!

Also, our TV cable box is connected to the router via ethernet, if we connect the TV cable box thingy to the Switcher instead, it should work right? Or should it stay connected to the router?

[Project] Measuring a listener's tolerance to the quality of audio files

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 09:23 PM PDT

I am working with LiveSensus, a team comprised of 5 Computer Science and Computer Engineering students at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. LiveSensus is working on a project that measures a listener's tolerance to different audio issues that may come up during live streams, video conferencing call, and online lectures.

LiveSensus has created a machine learning program where users can rate audio clips based on their perception of the quality. At this point, the website is launched and we are seeking respondents interested in testing out our easy 5 minute demo. All data will remain confidential and anonymity will be ensured.

We've been really excited to get this project up and running in a Covid-19 world where many workers, students, etc., are transitioning to online alternatives. Please feel free to contact us with any questions and most of all any comments for improvement. Any insights would go a really long way!

You can access our website at: livesensus.com/

and the demo directly at: livesensus.com/survey.html

Has anyone tried or heard of anyone taking on a similar project?

How do I transfer specific data like iMessage threads from an iPhone to non Mac computer?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 09:07 PM PDT

I want to transfer data (iMessage threads, photos, voice recordings, notes) from an iPhone onto a non Mac computer. I don't have iCloud and I haven't done a data transfer from phone to computer in over a decade. How can I get all of the specific things I mentioned into the computer (iMessage threads, photos, voice recordings, notes)?

Personalised recommendations on firefox on desktop based on phone activity? Is that possible?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 05:21 PM PDT

I've been taking pictures on my Huawei P20 recently using portrait mode. On my desktop, using firefox, opening a new blank tab, in the news article recommendations section, where links are recommended by something called "pocket", there was an article about how to take the best portrait. Now maybe this is just a coincidence...but I doubt it and I'm pretty creeped out by it. How the hell does an app in firefox on my desktop know about what I've been doing with my phone, which doesn't even have firefox? The only overlapping applications across my desktop and phone, as far as I know, are facebook and google related ones.

I'm used to getting recommendations based on my recent searches and browsing activity, but this is something different.

(On a related note, I've also seen recommendations which appeared to be based solely on the phone conversations I recently had with friends. Say we were talking about potatoes, and suddenly, in the next 24 hours, I get a seemingly out of the blue recommendation via google news on an article about potatoes... Feel like google or something is listening in. My phone is android after all.)

I found a similar thread from 2 years ago.

Security cameras that can be programmed to follow faces around

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 07:36 AM PDT

Hi guys. Weird title, I know. But I want to make an art piece on surveillance and I think one way to make the art piece would be to make a sculpture with lots of security cameras, which track people around the gallery.

Are there any security cameras that can be programmed by me to recognize people, or are there any that exist on the market that do that already? I would appreciate any links or product references. Thanks a lot.

Forgot my gmail password but no matter how many times I put in one of my backup codes and verify the phone attached to the account with the right validation code, it still says they can't verify the account is mine.

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 07:16 PM PDT

    I forgot my gmail password.

I have access to the emails on my phone but want to change the password.

I have a backup phone attached to the account but no backup email.

I also gave a list of backup codes that I generated last year in case.

When I type in my email then forgot password, it asks for my backup phone. I provide it and then it texts me a validation code that I then provide. It then takes me to a screen when I am asked to provide a 8 digit backup code which I do. It then asks me to provide an email where I can be reached. When I put in the email for the account I'm trying to access, it says I have to put in a different email. When I do it then emails me a validation code which I have to type into the recovery page. I do so and it then says "we could not verify the account belongs to you".

It doesn't ask me any other questions like account creation date or birthday.

I am typing in the right back up codes, right phone number, and right validation code. I'm at my wits end with this and don't know what else to do.

    Please help!

Forgot my gmail password but no matter how many times I put in one of my backup codes and verify the phone attached to the account with the right validation code, it still says they can't verify the account is mine.

Got my iPhone's screen repaired. Now LCD is acting weird. I haven't dropped the phone and there are no cracks. I contacted the repair shop before coming in to have it fixed and they are already blaming me saying I must have dropped it and cracked it on the inside only. Is this possible?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 06:31 PM PDT

Like the title says: I got my iPhone 5s screen repaired. Before this, the screen was just cracked but no issue with LCD digitizer. After I got it repaired, the screen started acting funky. Half of it will turn black, or invert colors, or start running into other colors, or will start going darker until it's completely dark. Each time I have to restart the phone to get it to go back to normal till the next time. But now a few months later it's becoming more frequent. I never dropped it since it's repaired and there are no fracks on the screen and no damage to the frame. I called the repair shop to explain and before I even could come in, they're already blaming me saying I must have dropped it and it was such a forceful drop that it made a crack on the inside but not outside. I told them flat out that sounds like bs, but they claim it's possible because "iPhone glass repair screens are very strong and if there was something wrong with the screen they put on it would have been from day 1". I then ask why they gave a 6 months warranty on the screen and they couldn't answer. They then said I have to come in and they will see if there's a crack first inside. I am reticent to come in in case they will purposely crack the inside to blame me because I told them I'll just do a credit card dispute since they've already blamed me without seeing it?

Is what they are saying true or are they bull shitting me?

New TV fast movements cause slight distortion

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 07:18 AM PDT

I recently moved and bought a second television (smart tv), I have noticed that on the new tv anything that involves fast movements seems to cause a slight distortion in the picture, it's not majorly noticeable but since I have noticed it's bugging me, my old tv doesn't do it, could it be a problem with the new TV?

Other than this the picture is great.

iOS app is able to access my photo library even when I have restrictions on to not allow any app to access it

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 01:01 PM PDT

I downloaded an app called "how old am I?" On my iPhone. It's an app where you can take a photo or upload a photo and it will guess how old you are. Under restrictions and privacy, I have photos turned off and locked meaning I do not grant permission to any app to have access to my photo library. On the app, there are two options: take a photo or upload a photo. When I go to take a photo, it asks me permission to use the camera which I did not allow. Then I tested it by trying to take a photo and it wouldn't let me. Then I went to upload a photo option and even though I have photo access turned off for all apps and locked under restrictions and privacy, it did not even ask me for access to my photo library, it just granted it access to all my photos which I could see. How is this possible? This is the second app I've seen this with. Both were these little unknown app developers/companies for which I can't find any contact info or terms of services at all. I have no idea if the photos are retained or what because there is no tos! If I go to a more reputable and bigger app like WhatsApp and try to access the photo library it will not allow me saying I have not granted it permission. But why did it allow this little "how old am I app", even though I haven't granted it permission? It's really creepy and obv a glitch Apple should know about

Tldr: iOS app is able to access my photo library even when I have restrictions on to not allow any app to access it

Keyboards with touchpads at the bottom like a laptop?

    Posted: 05 Jul 2020 11:29 AM PDT

I prefer typing on laptops because of the convenience of the touchpad. Placed just below the keys, I can access it without ever lifting my hands or having to move them very far from the home row.

Desktop keyboards come with a touchpad at the side for some reason. I figure that's even worse than using a mouse as you can't really rest your palm anywhere.

Where can I find a proper keyboard for the desktop with touchbar at the bottom like in laptops? Something like the magic keyboard for ipads, but for desktops.
