After all these years, why do phone alarm clocks still fail?

    Posted: 23 May 2020 02:51 AM PDT

It's been many years and it's always the same story. You set your alarm on the phone to wake up in the morning, and one random day it won't go off. It happened in the highscool, then in university and even now that I'm working. It happened with the old phones and happens now with the smartphones. Anyway, I have been using 2 or even 3 phones to set my alarm now for several years, so I never went late to work (I went late to highschool and uni one time each, and I decided to prevent this from happening in the future by using several phones, so I keep my old phones with me just for that purpose). My current phone is a Pocophone and it was working fine (although I think the countdown timer alarm failed a couple of times, but never the alarm clock), but now since the last update it failing a lot, like a real lot. Fortunately I have like 3 other old phones with me, but geez, this tiny issue should be one of the first things to be fixed.

Seriously, what's the big deal? Designers, come on, pay attention to this important issue!

Looking for a new mouse - suggestions?

    Posted: 23 May 2020 04:01 AM PDT

I have been using a Logitech trackball mouse for several years and I have been thinking about getting the Microsoft surface arc mouse but I know it is an optical mouse and not stationary like a trackball, and I don't know that it is possible to use the touch pad like a normal trackpad to move the cursor. Basically I am looking for a mouse that is stationary but has the functionality of a trackpad. I have no idea if that even exists. Any suggestions?

    Reading .SRT Files

    Posted: 23 May 2020 03:39 AM PDT

I'm aware that the .srt and the video files must be named the same way but my question is if the video file is at 2160p and the subtitles are only named at 720/1080p. Will simply renaming them get it to work? Or will the .srt files need to be originally have been made for 2160p?

Coding boot camp for 50s female

    Posted: 22 May 2020 08:06 AM PDT

    Good morning,

I'm asking here because my prior post got removed in another thread.

I'm interested in attending a boot camp. I've always been curious to learn and the prospect of getting a high paying tech job isn't bad either, if that is doable for a female in her 50s.

I hear there is a need for more women in tech.

    Are boot camps worth it?

    Please Help

    Posted: 22 May 2020 10:03 PM PDT

I had 50 mbps internet speed and I recently upgraded to 600 mbps. My playstation 4 for some reason is still running off of my previous internet, even though all my other devices are connected to the new internet. I tried everything I could think of, restarting my router, restarting my ps4, powering off my ps4, changing the IP address to what I believe is the current address for my internet. I am lost and I am not sure if I am missing something, but this seems to be a uncommon problem. I badly need help this is increadbly fustrating.

Software to assist with doing a clean installation of Windows

    Posted: 22 May 2020 09:14 PM PDT

My Windows 10 PC has become clogged with junk and is slow.

I want to backup the HDD and do a clean install.

I want software that will help selectively restore the settings and programs that I choose. I want some of the old programs to function properly in this fresh windows installation (ie, I don't want to have to reinstall and reconfigure everything from scratch).

Is there software that can assist with this?

How Do I Shut Off 5G On A Netgear Genie Router?

    Posted: 23 May 2020 12:04 AM PDT

It shows that it's off, but it's not. I urgently need to shut off 5G and switch the router back to 2.4ghz only. Yet despite showing as off when I go to advanced settings on the router login page, it still shows 5G as an available network on my PC. For reasons that I do not wish to get into on here, I need to make sure that the router is not emitting any 5G signals.

Does the PS4 or Fortnite really do record your conversations?

    Posted: 22 May 2020 05:35 PM PDT

My family and I were having lunch and me and my brothers were going at it. The topic turned to their foul language, especially when the game is on. My mother warned them that they record your conversations and one time they even sent the police at this teen's house. Is this actually real or is my mom just bsing my brothers?

A new PC on home network shutting down internet?

    Posted: 22 May 2020 12:17 PM PDT

My son has recently returned from school and since his return we've had numerous instances where the entire network fails to connect to the internet. This problem does not seem to happen when he is not here. Is it possible that something is going on on his PC laptop that could be triggering some kind of network wide failure?

The network consists of a cable modem which is connected to two routers in series, each providing coverage to two ends of the apartment.

The primary router handles DHCP, while the second router is connected to it and acts essentially as a switch broadcasting an SSID. Both routers share the same SSIDs (5g and 2g) so one can traverse the apartment and maintain a connection.

Connected to this network: multiple iOS devices, Mac and PC machines, Android phones, Roku, and a printer. About 10 devices in total. The network otherwise performs without incident save for the intermittent failure to connect to internet.

As far as I can surmise, this problem seems to happen only when my son's machine is here. When he was home for Christmas, it happened, when he left, it stopped happening. And since returning due to school closure, it seems to happen frequently.

Rebooting primary router and cable modem typically resolves the issue, typically.

So is there something that could be conflicting between his machine and some aspect of the network? My guess is the problem is in front of the apartment primary router. Either between it and the cable modem or the modem and the ISP.

His laptop is a typical budget PC running windows 10.

Thanks in advance for any assistance.

Is this the cheapest way for me to be getting internet?

    Posted: 22 May 2020 03:17 PM PDT

Hello. The house I'm living in right now has WiFi, but it's not very good. Before I got my laptop, I was paying $60 a month for a Sprint data plan which gave me unlimited data for my phone, as well as unlimited calls and texts. I had to choose this plan because otherwise I really wouldn't have much to do, and my phone was locked to Sprint.

Then I got a laptop. I needed to use my phone as a mobile hotspot, so I upgraded to a $70 per month data plan which gave me 50 GB of hotspot data instead of the 500 MB that the previous plan gave me. Eventually I chose to upgrade again to an $80 per month plan which gave me 100 GB per month, which would give me more peace of mind. Now I'm using nearly that amount, because I'm inside all of the time because of the virus. That plan had some extra features, but the only reason I got it was because of the hotspot data, but it did also give me Amazon Prime which has been useful (but there's a possibility I could use someone else's prime account).

Now I've upgraded my phone. I had a 6 year old Galaxy S5 and now I have a new mid-range phone. This phone is unlocked, so I can get plans with carriers that aren't Sprint. I was going to go ahead and stick to my current plan and just activate my new phone with Sprint, but I'm not so sure now. Is there some kind of way that I can get a router and choose a cheaper plan for my phone?

Looking for a good USB hub for HDD

    Posted: 22 May 2020 11:10 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I'm currently running a 2017 MacBook Air and am thinking of buying an HDD to store my music production DAW, plugins, samples, etc etc

Sadly, I broke one (of two) USB 3.0 ports and would need a USB hub to use both my midi keyboard and external drive.

My question is which one to get and what would be compatible. Im a little pressed for cash so that is also a factor. I'm very new to both external drives and hubs so any advice at all would be appreciated! I'd also love some HDD recommendations!

    Thanks in advance!

    Need advice for a new laptop. Between HP Enxy x360 15'' (2020 refreshed)/ASUS VivoBook S15 S533

    Posted: 22 May 2020 01:56 PM PDT

Would like some advice. I am between a few laptops and I am looking for a 14-15'' laptop (was thinking about chromebook as well...)

I am willing to spend between $800-$1200 for one. I mainly use my current surface pro 4 12'' for work (medical field, writing clinical notes, data, emails, outlook, research, etc). Watch videos and with research I keep a bunch of tabs open at same time. The 12 inch is too small (after using my GF's HP Chromebook 5). The difference is very noticeable when reading and typing. I would like a quick laptop, easy on the eyes for reading and typing long reports, reading emails, personal and on outlook, research, would like to edit photos here and there. No gaming. Touch screen is nice to have and tablet mode is not something I am strictly looking for but it is a nice feature. Matte vs glossy screen, etc Number pad is also nice to have.... I do fancy a black laptop though..... this laptop would be just to work from home... I like the Galaxy Book flex also but that blue color... Can't see a professional who isn't in media use it.. lol

PC won’t boot, red CPU light on mobo

    Posted: 22 May 2020 01:33 PM PDT

So today I put a 2080ti into my pc. It ran fine for about an hour but then shut down abruptly. Now my computer will turn on, but not boot. Fans and LED come on but no display will appear. There is also a red light labeled CPU that is solid on my motherboard. I put in my old GPU to see if it would boot and still nothing. My specs are Ryzen 5 3600, 600W PSU, 16GB RAM. Is it possible I fried my motherboard or CPU? I have already tried another PSU but it didn't work.

Is there any advantage to sharing websites with "https://www. [...]"?

    Posted: 22 May 2020 06:33 AM PDT

Sorry if this isn't the right place to ask this, but

You know how you can type "reddit.com" on the address bar of you browser and it automatically puts you in "https://www.reddit.com/"? Yet when you click share on any website, the link copied always has the "https://www. [...]" in front of the link.

Is that really necessary? I mean is there a reason youtube gives you the link "https://youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ" instead of "youtu.be/dQw4w9WgXcQ" when both of them work just fine?

Do I have to be worried about permanent screen burn on my TV?

    Posted: 22 May 2020 08:50 AM PDT

I don't know for certain, but I think it's a plasma screen tv rather than an LCD, as it can get temporary screen burn after quite a short amount of time.

The reason I'm worried is that I'm currently playing Jurassic Park on the SNES, and that has lengthy indoor sections where the viewfinder is a pair of goggles.

Because of this, there's a persistent after image whenever I exit the buildings, and I'm worried about permanently burning it into the screen.

Also, the game has no save feature, despite how lengthy it is, so I can't just leave it for the day, I need to get back to it soon if I wanna beat the game.

    Am I right to worry?

Does anyone have problems downloading apps on IPad?

    Posted: 22 May 2020 07:55 AM PDT

I know I'm a kid but my mom doesn't put any restrictions on what apps I download (I only download free ones) so it could only be a problem with me or my Ipad and not my parent. When I try to download a app, I press the blue button that you always do on any apple device and then I get the grey spinning thing that never stops in other words just not downloading the app. I've got a long history of great intent and a long history of downloading apps smoothly with no connection errors. I restarted the internet connection to my Ipad and every other Internet requiring application works perfectly. I'm unable to download anything. Does anybody know any other cases about this type of thing?

    I need MP4 help!

I know it needs to be on when charging, but it just turns on (https://drive.google.com/file/d/1lMoVP6K16doqj3IdkkxQXScXVfU5vwbN/view?usp=sharing), immediately goes to a low battery screen ( https://drive.google.com/file/d/1W_L-5zdyYqUQeFra2np_q8XPjT6OUlNa/view?usp=sharing) and turns off.
