How do I fix an intermittently jamming button on my wireless XB1 controller?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 02:15 AM PST

The "A" button on one of my Xbox one controllers, intermittently jams up, but, it only jams when I press it repeatedly with the underside of my thumb, however, if I use the tip of my thumb, it won't jam at all.

Bad cough when using my projector (Acer H7530D) for too long...?

    Posted: 27 Jan 2020 02:08 AM PST

Everytime I am using my projector for longer than ~2 hours I am starting to get this really dry cough. It's not just me, it also happens to friends when they come over for let's say a PS4 session.
The projector is 10 years old and on its 3rd lamp.

I dind't find anything obvious on Google, nor does the projector has an air filter (which some others do have). What causes the cough? How dangerous is this to my health? Has anybody else expierienced this?

I am btw therefore looking for a LED projector, as I feel they are much cooler and don't produce so much electro-smog...

Just wanted to share this, and see what the community has to say about this. Thanks!

How do I set up a Windows laptop for senior citizens with minimal prior computer familiarity? Is there any software that helps simplify user experience?

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 01:20 PM PST

Unsure if this is the right sub, if wrong please refer me to wherever it belongs. Any help is very much appreciated as I have never done computer setups like this before.

I am setting up this system for multiple seniors on multiple laptops and the staff at the retirement home requested that I use either Windows or macOS since they are more familiar with these. So I cant just download Linux and just tailor Zorin (or similar) to only allow exactly what they need. Since I won't admin or support the system for very long I have to prioritize creating something easily maintainable and more widely used so Linux is not really an option.

As for what the laptops are to be used for, the only things requested were:

    • Read newspapers online
    • Receive and write emails
    • Look at photos
    • Access online bank services and medical journals
    • Write and print documents
    • Play some games like solitaire and chess

So in essence, a web browser, a text editor, a games folder/downloader and an email client. But I do hope this list will increase as they become acquainted with this wonderful tool.

The question then is, how to set this up? What applications are most intuitive for people without technological intuition? Also how restrictive should I be about what I allow the user to access? I know I have to restrict some functionality to prevent accidental tampering and ensure they feel comfortable enough to experiment, without worrying too much about doing something wrong. In my experience whether or not you can make the person you are introducing to new technology feel confident enough to explore and test themselves is the deciding factor in how they will view it forever.

Have already set up some simple scripts with some rudimentary file sorting and one that organizes their desktop and creates shortcuts to relevant functions and file locations to make manoeuvring a little easier. If you have any other good ideas for things that I can easily automate I would be more than happy to hear them.

Also if anyone knows any software that allows you to navigate between menus more easily, possibly improve the "Windows + Tab" function that would be fantastic as I often see newcomers struggle to find their way back to "known territory". Also, something that would automatically manage open windows and applications, closing anything that hasn't been used in a while and auto-saving any progress regularly for easy recovery would be super handy.

Edit: Budget is around 6 250USD for 8 laptops with mice.

Edit2: Realized I hadn't focused enough on safe browsing, a comment suggested using an AdBlock browser extension which I definitely will, I also plan on using installing Malwarebytes for the automatic virus scan. Any other measures I should look into?

    internet help required urgently.

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 08:16 AM PST

Hi, I'm needing some help. on a small internert issue, I own my own gym and i've moved the facility to a bigger one, now I've taken up an interest in getting kids off the street to lower knife crime, and also anti bullying etc, it's doing reasonably well at the moment, but as the gym is starting up I own a few businesses that require online work. And this is where my problem begins, The gym is in a building that use to be an old factory. With old train lines near by that have been removed. Anyway basically it does not have internet access and is unable to get it, no problem I can get a 3stick I thought, however here is the issue, most of the the time the speed of the 3stick on my laptop top is so slow i'm unable to do work there. (alot of people also struggle to get phone signal inside the building) if I'm unable to use rthe internet here for my online businesses, I would have to obviously hire someone else for certain hours and would not be able to commit to the anti bullying classes, and the "get kids off the street" glasses Ie say no to knives. Which is something I want to continue doing. So i'm wondering if there is a way to boost the speed or gert a better signal something I can buy like a booster perhaps? I'm not savy with things like this so require some real help/pointing in the right direction. I'm in the UK so need somewhere in the uk to buy the said item.

    Laptop suggestions for school

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 08:09 PM PST

Heading into 9th grade and I need a new laptop. I don't need a gaming one as I built a gaming pc but I do value things like touch screen and stylus compatibility. I am coming from a hp spectre x360 2015 and I love the gaming aesthetic in laptops, black with rgb. so if anyone knows of any laptops that fit the criteria please respond.

Suggestions for tablet for toddler: want to be able to uninstall or hide normal YouTube but use YouTube kids

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 07:24 PM PST

We are looking for a tablet for our toddler and we have a few 'musts': must be able to install YouTube kids, must be able to uninstall (or somehow hide) normal YouTube so that toddler does not even see the YouTube logo (because she wants to use it if she sees it), must be able to install the Khan academy kids app. Ideally we would like to be able to hide any of the pre-installed apps and have access to Google play. We currently have the Amazon fire and I know there are probably ways to do all these things but it's too frustrating to constantly find work arounds . Under $150 would be great. Thanks in advance.

    D-Link DCS-8000LH notifications problem

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 07:00 PM PST

I can't wrap my head around the fact that I have four of these cameras installed in my Google ecosystem, and I can't get motion sensing notifications through the app - whether it's the Google Home app or the mydlink one.

    To expand:

    • the mydlink app (where I have them set up) does not have an option for motion sensing notifications, yet it does let me enable motion sensing zones.

    • the mydlink LITE app is supposed to let me set up notifications for motion sensing, but is not supported by the Google Home system.

    • I have both mydlink AND mydlink lite set up under the same account and e-mail, yet mydlink lite does not see the cameras already set up in mydlink. When I try to add cameras in mydlink lite, it fails to connect to already working cameras and forces me to try and install from scratch.

    • the mydlink.com web (browser) interface does not offer an option to enable notifications of any kind.

The dlink forums are dead since August 2019, and there is no other way I could find information on the www. Perhaps someone here can point me in the right direction? (Buying Nest cams at this point is out of question, I have to make do with what I've got.) Thanks.

    Help me find a 1980x1080p 120hz Television

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 06:23 PM PST

I understand its 2020 and EVERYONE wants to play in 4K and have RGB in their computers cause that's definitely helping, not drawing extra power away from the part and adding heat to it, no that's not basic math or a dumb idea at all *cough cough*. Anyway I'm building a PC for gaming and I have an old 1080p 6ohz tv with some dead pixels I'm looking to replace it after I build my pc which should be able to more than handle 1080p 60-120+ fps in most games I play. But and I know "You could just get a 4k tv and downscale it" but no, I'm picky and crazy whatever, just no, I don't want to get a 4K tv and mess with the scaling and add all that unnecessary processing to either the system or the television. I want a Television native 1980x1080P 120hz Native refresh rate, not any of the fake ones, but I have scoured the internet for weeks and several shops and pawn stores and mobile selling apps to no avail. Every promising lead I find online leads to pages of "Discontinued" 2011-2015 or "currently unavailable" and the few I have found have ranged from $800 to $5,000 while a 4k 120hz tv is some how like $250- $500 but honestly 4k is just kind of stupid in my opinion (though not the popular one) especially for gaming because, most hardware, at least that people can afford can barley do 4k at 60fps unless you turn down the texture settings in which case what the hells the point? if anyone could help me possibly locate some I'd appreciate it. (Not looking for new necessarily or any particular brands though Samsung would be preferred)

Proximity sensor not connected to phone

    Posted: 26 Jan 2020 08:48 AM PST

When I had my Galaxy Note phone, it would alarm if I moved the phone too far away from the included stylus. I want to find something that does that for other devices but I don't even know what to type into Google to find if there such a thing.

(If it helps, the situation is a carry a thumb drive on my name tag. It has happened more than once that I will use the thumb drive and then walk away from the computer. When I realize I am not wearing it, I need to backtrack through my day until I find the computer that I left it in. And since it's a secured thumb drive, I really shouldn't be leaving it anyway even if I do find it later. I work in a brick building and am not allowed to have my phone with me so I need something that works independently)

I recently got a new phone. To transfer some of my data on games, I set up game center. But, I made the mistake of setting it up on the new phone first, so now my old phone keeps asking me if I want to transfer the new game data, and I can't get my games on the new phone. Is there another way to get the games transferred, or a way to make my old phone the default device?
