Got windows prompt for new computers out of nowhere, is it a virus?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 01:22 AM PDT

After downloading and installing cracked version of Adobe After Effects, sometime later I restarted my computer but on start up a full screen window that one would get when they would start up windows computer for the first time came up. I clicked "Skip for now" and it returned to my desktop and everything seems fine.

When installing the app, windows defender nor my WebRoot anti-virus gave any warning. I rescaned with WebRoot and still no threats. I have since deleted the app.

So is this something that happens after installing Adobe products or am I infected?

    Win10 B SoD

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 03:25 AM PDT

A bit of context before the real error:

English is not my first language, so sorry for all the possible typos in advance.

I'm a high school student who knows just above average in terms of computers, so people in my family tend to use me as their IT man, but I'm ok w/ that. The problem starts when I find an error that exceeds my knowledge.

Here comes: a friend of mine came with a B SoD, the kind of one is not fatal, just the :( and a bunch of useless troubleshooting text. My friend says it had win 7 installed, but the :( is characteristic of 8 n 10. This friend has a lot of photos and documents he'd like to keep, and saving these files is the actual priority over the hardware. It looks like a newbie error of trying to upgrade without a bit of knowledge. I know that reinstalling win10 would save all the old files, but I'm afraid he upgraded to an old win10 version and when I install a newer one these will f*** up. I came to the conclusion that there is a 50/50 chance he installed the newer version and his files will remain intact, but I don't want to screw up. In about 4 hours I'll talk w/ him in person and may resolve my doubts, but I wanted a second (or third, or fourth,...) opinion before start guessing.

    Thanks in advance

Can anyone recommend a USB 3.0 hub that can accommodate both USB 3.0 and USB-C connections?

    Posted: 02 Jun 2020 02:11 AM PDT

All the hubs I've seen on Amazon have a USB-C cable to connect to the computer, but my laptop only has USB 3.0 ports. If I search for USB 3.0 hubs they only have USB 3.0 ports, but I also need some USB-C ports and I don't want to just buy multiple adaptors for each USB-C device. Sorry if this is kind of confusing, let me know if i can describe it better

Integrated desktop camera on the fritz - suggestions?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 10:34 AM PDT

My main work computer is a Dell Inspiron 23 all-in-one. I've had it since 2015 and replaced the hard drive 2 years ago. Last week I got on a Zoom meeting and my camera went on the fritz. I was in the picture but it was lined and jumping all over the place. Later it stopped working completely. I went in device manager and disabled and re-enabled the camera, which didn't work. I then uninstalled and re-installed it, and that didn't work. Suggestions on what else I should try? Why would my camera quit working while the rest of the computer is working fine? Please assume I know nothing about technology in your response!

Issues playing video files on Samsung Smart TV

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 08:40 PM PDT

Hey everyone, I have a quick question. So I have a hard drive with a lot of shows and movies that I watch sometimes on my Smart TV. I've never had any issues til I tried to show my wife the show Leverage. They would show up as not being able to play or there was an error playing the video. After doing some research online I saw that Samsung TVs can't play MKV files (which is what the format the show is in). So I transferred the files to, what I thought was MP4 files, using handbrake but they are listed as M4V and they now they aren't even showing up on the TV. It just shows the folder as being empty. I've spent days trying to figure this out, can someone much smarter than me please help? Lol

Why is my Bluetooth headphones still alive after I accidentally left it on for 8+ hours?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 04:16 PM PDT

I woke up and saw that my Bluetooth headphones were still on. But I didn't charge it for quite some time so I knew it wasn't at full battery. And it stayed alive for a long time afterward too. Do Bluetooth headphones not lose any battery if no audio is coming through it?

TechKey usb bluetooth adapter for ps4 to wireless headphones.

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 03:00 PM PDT

    Hey yall,
    Bought this:
    https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07J5WFPXX/ref=ask_ql_qh_dp_hza
1 for me, 1 for my brother to connect our bluetooth headphones to our ps4 audio output. I was sent to this product via a pretty clear google query. Received the product with a mini cd for the driver and minimal instructions for pc. plugging it into the usb port does not bring up an optional device -->audio device option. Driver disc is not compatible to ps4. Absolutely no support/instructions online.

Anyone know how to get this working? Will it even work?

"Your phone accessed the DARK WEB" *spooky sounds*

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 01:41 PM PDT

The IT guy of my workplace told me that my phone accessed the Dark web. I did not intentionally did this so what are the general steps to find the cause of this connection? Assuming his claims are true. I know approximate time and date of the event but no more details than that.

I have an android phone and I only install apps from Google store or F-Droid

Can anyone recommend noise canceling headphones?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 01:02 PM PDT

I'd like to stay under $150 but am flexible a bit and looking for over ear with a comfy fit and Bluetooth. I'm by no means an audiophile so as long as it sounds decent, I'm good. I did find a pair I liked and had great reviews but the product details mentioned it blocked lower frequently sounds like airplane engines but I'm looking specifically for something to block out general noise at home. Any suggestions on something to use around the house more than noisy areas?

    Thanks!

How are colours measured in a colour depth other than 8?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 12:14 PM PDT

so, my favourite colour is #C923FE. That's fine and dandy, but how about 10, 12, 16 bit colour? I assume that they don't use hex. Also, do the rest of the colours go to the "space" between the original 256, to make it a full 1024 for 10-bit? Thanks for your help, I was just curious :)

I have a lot of sheets of paper with data typed on and would like to be able to scan it into a spreadsheet or doc and convert to editable text so save me typing it all in manually?

Does anyone know of any software preferably free that can do this.

How has technology affected your everyday life and the depiction of the world around you?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 09:05 AM PDT

So, I've got an assignment regarding this particular subject that I have to discuss during my final oral exam. And I thought, what better place to gather information if not the subreddit named after it. Today we are aware that most families around the globe possess at least one computer in their houses and therefore, one is capable to interact with millions of other users in a matter of seconds. It touches all the aspects of our quotidianity while we're also constantly updated with the news to a point it can be considered overwhelming (coronavirus, Minneapolis riots etc.).

I thank you in advance for your cooperation

    Storage Dilemma

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 07:59 AM PDT

Last week I purchased an HP USB 256gb flash drive, and when I plugged it in, it only reads 232gb's, when it should read 238gb's. The unit converter online for digital storage says the flash drive should be 238gb's. That is a 6gb difference.

Today I purchased a PNY USB 256gb flash drive. I plugged it in and it only reads 230gb's.

Can someone please explain to me why there is such a discrepancy in storage? And, can someone please tell me how much storage a 256gb flash drive should actually have. Thank you.

    Can anyone recommend a radio?

    Posted: 01 Jun 2020 07:49 AM PDT

I feel like this is a really stupid question. My mum died on Saturday and the house is really quiet now. I thought I'd get a radio but I realised that I've got no idea what to search for or reliable brands. I'm looking for something I can play music from my phone on and something with FM/AM/digital/whatever with decent speaker quality. I've got no idea what to expect pricewise. The last time I brought a radio was probably over 10 years ago and I know that features have changed a lot.

    Thank you!!
