My phone started showing Titanic-related content after I played the theme on piano... WTF?!?!

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 07:41 PM PST

I was messing around with a some sounds on my digital audio workstation, when I found a Bagpipe sound. I thought "sounds cool" and to test it out I played the beginning of the song "Never an absolution" from the Titanic soundtrack. I played loudly it through my speakers.

I thought that was the end of that. Later in the night I'm laying on my couch and open up the Google search app on my phone. It usually shows some recent articles related to searches you've made.

Well I open the Google app and the first thing that comes up is a story about how celine dion recorded "My heart will go on'.

    I nearly dropped my phone.

I didn't talk about Titanic, I didn't search for anything Titanic related, haven't seen ANYTHING titanic related in my searches for ages. Is this a monumental coincidence or is there any possible explanation for this.

How to Download Video and Image files Efficiently In Bulk from 4chan archive sites like Yuki.la?

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 03:08 AM PST

Title of the post is basically the whole thing. Anyone have any ideas? Someones helped me to try and use wget but that only seems to work for 4chan, and not an archive site like yuki.la.

Is it safe to allow a neighbor to use my WiFi ?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 02:34 PM PST

I'm sorry if this is in the wrong section.I have no idea how Reddit works.

We recently moved into a new apartment building and our neighbor asked if he could use our WiFi and pay for it monthly. My boyfriend said yes and so far, the neighbor has been using it for a month.

The problem is that I think it's a bad move, but I need help because I'm not a tech person, so I have no idea whether I'm wrong.

If he does illegal things then we'll be liable.

Should we not allow the neighbor to use our WiFi? Or is there a safe way to do so?

He's currently using our WiFi through the repeater that my boyfriend installed, but I have no idea whether this makes a difference.

I heard we should get a second router?? Or something about blocking access to certain websites ? But can't he use them either way with a vpn?

    All help is appreciated :)

    Mic monitoring

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 02:16 AM PST

I don't know if this is the right place, if not then please guide me to the right subreddit.

So I have a problem with my communications on my PC where I'm using in ear JBL earphones and making use of the Microphone in them. The problem is I can't hear myself speak so I start to shout. I want to know if there's something I can get like an external audio device that helps with microphone monitoring so I can hear myself in my earphones. I know of the windows 'listen' feature but there's a small delay which messes up my speaking. I also don't want to now have to invest in $300 headphones just for that feature.

Buying gaming laptop Ram 16 gb vs 32 gb

    Posted: 25 Jan 2021 12:11 AM PST

I'm planning to buy a gaming laptop (ASUS ROG strix) and the place that sells it has two ram options 16gb & 32 gb.
The price difference is $200 bucks.

I'm hoping to use the laptop for average 5 years and was wondering if getting 32gb is worth it or is it too much?

Cant format/reset my pc and cant either enter safe mode or anything, im screwed?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 11:40 PM PST

so to sum things up i bought a new mini pc and just used for 1 day until i got annoyed due to constant blue screens crashes etc with windows 10, i tried a lot of things carefully while looking for solutions in google, and nothing worked until i decided to see if it was a problem with the drivers, downloaded tweakbit since it was one of the choices to update the drivers(bad call) and my mini pc got fcked up, cant enter the menu to enter safe mode or anything at all, im stuck in an endless loop of inaccessible boot device (your pc ran into a problem and needs to restart), i looked for solutions and the only choice was to format, so i downloaded a version of windows 7 and used rufus and a 16gb usb, so i entered the bios and choose the usb to start with the thing but things failed midway and an error occurred "a problem has been detected and windows has been shutdown"...

this is horrible, does anyone has any suggestions? im freaking out since i just buyed the mini pc from aliexpress and i doubt they will help me at all, i did tried contacting them tho...

    pd: sorry for the english:c

    Booting offline

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 01:55 PM PST

I don't know if this is the right subreddit for this question but my friends and I learned how to boot people offline with some website called Stressthem. We didn't do it often except when one of us was annoying and another booted them. One of my friends (G for convenience )got a bit annoyed with us and took screenshots of us with G's IP on discord and he said he would report us to the police. My friends weren't that concerned but I got a bit paranoid and wondered if G reported to the police what would happen? This is in Canada and all of us are minors. One of our friends sent us screenshots of G texting his friends on Instagram asking for help with reporting to the police and he sent screenshots of one of my other friends sending G's IP and threatening to boot offline. That friend said that he isn't very worried because so many people threaten to boot offline without actually doing anything. He says that he wouldn't get in trouble because he could just plead that he was bluffing and G wouldn't have proof of booting.

Sorry for the bad grammar, I'm too lazy to double-check my writing

    Questions about a new laptop

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 09:15 PM PST

Hello all, I was looking to get my niece a new laptop and was looking for any suggestions. I'm looking in the $400-$500 range and able to do a few things: adequate space for school homework files and the ability to play The Sims 4 which is her favorite game. I don't need anything drastic that is like a gaming computer but I'm not too sure about the optimal specs. Sorry for this sounding like such a dumb question but I really need the help. Thank you!

Is there a comprehensive technology know-it-all site/book for hardware of various modern devices?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 06:00 PM PST

I am already tech savvy, quite a lot. But there are some areas I never explored or some that have some exotic hardware. Is there a book/site (beside searching them on internet one by one) that has a comprehensive guide on the various hardware existing, cables, plugs and how to?

I.e: For computer mouses we had PS2 port, and it looks like this [picture], with his own receiving plug [picture]. Then there was usb, which stands for universal serial bus. It can hold 127 devices. Now we have usb 3.1.
Phones have various charging cords. Iphone has his own [picture] android had micro usb and now usb type c.

Tvs and screens had a scart plug, then in 2000 we got to VGI, then displayport, then HDMI.

Something along these lines which gives explanations, history, old and new hardware and so on, on various levels. Like wifi, mouse, computers, printers, screens, kitchen robots, whatever hardware.

    Thanks

External USB hard drive corrupts media pu onto it

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 05:53 PM PST

I bought an external USB hard drive and for some unknown reason it corrupts most of the video files that I put onto it. I've put other file types on, Ai, PNG, Jpeg, PDF, txt, rtf, psd. All of them will open fine. The video files I've put on it are mkv, mov, & mp4. Some of the files play back fine, but most of them give the "this file is corrupt" error. Is there a way to format the drive so that is doesn't do this? or is there something in a setting somewhere that I can fix the files?

Why does Google think I’m a business?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 05:27 AM PST

My house is coming up on google as a business with pictures of my house from street view. It's even got an option to Review it and the business description is 'lodgings'.

No one has claimed the business and there is no website attached. Does anyone know how I get google to take it down? It's not a business and we already get people turning up and refusing to leave.

Would someone have had to set this up on Google? Or could Google have done it thinking it's a real business? How do I get rid of it??? Any help gratefully appreciated

Remote control ON OFF my wifi router?

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 08:49 AM PST

I want to be able to remotely (web or phone) blanket OFF and ON my wifi router and or cherry pick specific device access).

Basically for parenting purposes while I'm at work - as a way to ensure that before kid hops in games, tablet, etc they do their necessary after school chores etc. after which I'd remotely re-enable wifi.

I don't have a static IP address if relevant. I have a modem which then connects to a small wifi router.

    Thx.

Using iMac as a display for PC

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 10:13 AM PST

I may have a weird question

But I've been thinking lately of getting an iMac for myself (I just prefer MacOS for doing personal stuff)

I already have a gaming PC that I am using for, well, games

Problem is I only have one desk and space for one monitor only

Would it be possible to use iMac as a monitor for Windows PC?

I have found that it is possible, I would just like to know if there are limitations, especially resolution wise (since I am aiming for 5k iMac machine) and Hz wise (will it support 60Hz fine)?

    Thanks in advance

    2in1 used like a screen

    Posted: 24 Jan 2021 08:57 AM PST

    Hello,

I have a dell xps 13 2in1 with the i7 processor from like 5 years ago. I didn't use it in a year because I prefer my main desktop. Is there a way to connect it to my main computer and use it exactly like a additionnal screen (and additionnal keyboard) except it run on the wifi instead of an hdmi wire.

    thanks
