    Dual monitor setup with laptop

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 03:32 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I just went back to university for my Masters degree (Humanities) and I am looking to make a proper work space at home (due to corona). Through work I have gotten used to multiple monitors, so I have decided I want to make my own setup with two monitors connected to a laptop via a docking station. I have been using Windows at work and a MacBook at home, but I can't seem to get used to/familiarize myself with the MacBook, so I have decided to buy a new windows laptop for my studies.

So, I am looking to buy a new laptop, two monitors, keyboard, mouse and a docking station. Do you have any recommendations on what to look for? Anything particular I should keep in mind when buying a laptop for this setup?

I am thinking a budget of maximum 1500 Euros (I'm located in the Netherlands) should be enough. From what I can see, I should be able to find somewhat decent monitors for around 100-140 euros each.

I will primarily work with writing, researching, data visualization and possibly some photo editing.

    Any tips are highly appreciated!

    Monitor Compatibility for New MacBooks

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 01:55 AM PDT

Last year I purchased a budget UltraWide monitor (LG 34um69g-b). The main reason I went for this model was that it had a USB-C port. As I knew I would be upgrading my MacBook in the future, I didn't want compatibility issues. Since then I have purchased a new MacBook Air, however, I have since learnt that despite having USB-C, the monitor is not compatible (MacBook won't detect it). From my understanding this is because MacOS doesn't support DisplayPort over USB-C?

I am now in the situation I wanted to avoid where I have to change monitor again. I know that Thunderbolt 3 monitors will work without problems, but there are a lot of good 4K monitors that are USB-C not thunderbolt. How are you supposed to know if your system will actually work with the display? Are monitors advertised as having USB-C different from USB-C DisplayPort Alt?

For me dongles are out of the question and I am afraid of purchasing another monitor only to run into the same problem. Help would be appreciated.

How to record a videoconference using my iPhone?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 01:22 PM PDT

Pretty simple question but I want to make sure I'm doing this right. I have a phone call with someone with whom I'm doing an interview for a training video and I'd like to record both audio and video of just him and me in a split screen set up using my iPhone. What app do I need to do this?

URGENT. Will downloading videos like this keep the video alive, even if the source is deleted?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 12:30 AM PDT

Open VLC and select "Open Media"...

Click "Network" and paste your YouTube URL. ...

If using Mac, Select "Window" and then "Media Information" ...

If using Windows, select "Tools" and then "Codec Information" ...

Find the "Location" bar at the bottom, and copy the URL. ...

Paste the URL into your browser.

For example, I'm trying to download Joe Rogan's videos before they are deleted, will doing this method still keep the video alive even if the original video itself is deleted?

Why hasn't Zoom been legally cloned and beaten, like by Big Tech?

    Posted: 02 Sep 2020 12:23 AM PDT

Zoom's stock price just rocketed $132.59 (40.78%) to $457.69 on Sep 1 2020. For video conferencing, Zoom appears popularer than alternatives like

    1. Zoom isn't rocket science. Why hasn't another company legally cloned it?

    2. To outrival Zoom, why don't companies like Google or Microsoft improve or better market their Hangouts, Skype or Teams?

I need a new gaming mouse.

I have a wired Razer Naga Trinity and it's does this weird thing of double-clicking while i'm just holding down left click, it also won't drag properly. I am looking for a new mouse, anything that is a gaming mouse, and is under $150 i'm happy with.

    Windows 10 Activation

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 07:34 PM PDT

Hey I currently have a laptop with a licensed version of Windows 10 that came with my laptop when I purchased it 4 years ago. I keep on getting the blue screen error where it shows a ":(" with some text saying Windows ran into a problem and needs to restart and a QR code. This has happened perhaps 5 times within the last 2 or 3 days. I want to test if it is an OS issue or hardware issue by reinstalling a fresh instance of Windows 10 and if the issue persists, I think that will be indicative of where my issue lies. I heard that my product license key is stored within the motherboard so I don't need it to activate a fresh copy of Windows 10 when I am installing onto the same laptop using a flashdrive? Are there any risks not related to data loss?

Could a hacker exploit your host machine through a virtual machine?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 05:48 PM PDT

Assuming that storage sharing is off or even one way from host to vm, and that the virtual machine is partitioned on a completely separate hard drive than the host OS is on (though not separate from other files) and if the OS's are different? I don't know anything about hacking but I assume that any file that shares physical space (i.e. same hard drive) while difficult, is still possible to infect.

Switching hard drives between HP and MacBook?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 02:16 PM PDT

I am a complete noob to this so please bear with me and forgive me if this is a stupid question! (I have tried googling this, by the way, but can't seem to find an answer...)

I have a HP laptop (model number 15-ay078na) which has stopped turning on completely. I also have a MacBook (model macOS Sierra Version 10.12.6).

I want to recover the hard drive from inside the HP laptop but seeing as it won't turn on I'm wondering if it would be possible for me to physically remove the hard drive from inside the HP and somehow transfer it's contents onto the MacBook? I can buy any additional leads/cables etc. if necessary.

I wonder if anyone has any answers?! Thank you so much if so!

    Fire Stick related

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 02:14 PM PDT

Hey all. Not the savviest when it comes to technical difficulties. I wanted to know can a fire stick be overloaded with apps and what have you, the same way, say our phones or laptops can?

And will that then cause a lag in the use of the fire stick?

    Wireless webcam?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 07:47 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

I'd like to use the TV as a monitor for my computer and create conference call with a webcam. The whole thing should be integrated with the room. It means that cable shouldn't be apparent.

Connecting the TV to the computer is easy, I can run a HDMI cable through some walls, from the station to the TV. And from the TV, use some bluetooth mouse and keyboard.

Now, for the webcam, what should I do? The webcam should be connected to the computer via USB (I believe) but since the distance between the computer and the TV will be approximately 5 meter, I was wondering if there wasn't a better way than using a USB extension cable.

Is there any wireless cam available? Or is there any other way.

    Thanks!

EDIT: I'd prefer to have a standalone webcam as opposed to a smartphone so that I can use it even if I'm not physically there. To be used for Skype, or other online conference app for desktop.

Is it possible to have a dual monitor setup using a laptop as the "tower" (so to speak)

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 01:43 PM PDT

I'm going back to school and have found myself facing a number of schedule conflicts due to all classes being remote. As a result, I am hoping to get a dual monitor system so that I can have more things up and running at once.

Unfortunately, I am still a student and have to pick and choose my financial battles. I can afford the two extra monitors and mounts and such, but I don't think I can swing a tower right now. So I am instead hoping that maybe I can use my laptop (Surface Book 2) and extend its screen to the dual monitors, making them my main screens instead.

I already have a wireless mouse and keyboard so I would basically be looking to cast my laptop onto the other monitors and then set my laptop aside.

Is something like this possible (or even remotely recommendable)?

Advice: How Can I Better Edit Videos I Post To YouTube?

    Posted: 01 Sep 2020 07:52 AM PDT

    Hello, technology fans!

To set the scene: I have an iPhone 11 Pro Max 64Gb and an iPad 7th Generation 32Gb. I pay for extra iCloud storage. I have a cable-connected wifi router that gets me typically 120mbs for download speeds and around 5mbs for upload speeds.

I have a YouTube channel where I discuss an alternative to TRP that is non-misogynistic. Currently, I record the video using my iPhone, a Yeti mic hooked up to said iPhone, and a ring light; I then edit the videos using my iPad, since iMovie doesn't work quite as well on the iPhone as it does on the iPad.

My problem is this: the video files take FOREVER to load into iCloud, so I cannot edit the same evening typically, just wait a day for the video to sync with my iPad. Even then, whenever I try to edit the video using iMovie, I have to wait FOREVER for it to download from iCloud Photos and onto my iPad, if it ever does (I set it down last night, and it is still "downloading" — though I see no progress bar — this morning).

My question is: is there a better way to do this? It seems very needlessly time-consuming and inefficient. I'm wondering if there is a better way, and if the other power users on here could help point me in the right direction.

    TIA.
