I need help finding the name of a device

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 12:08 AM PDT

I am looking for a device which you can plug into a phone through usb-type-c and changes it into 1x usb type c entry so I can still charge the phone and 2 usb-a female ports (USB 2.0 or 3.0 is fine). My question is what is the name for such a thing and does such a thing even exist?

Ideas on how to Virtually Attend my Brother’s Wedding

    Posted: 17 Sep 2020 04:49 AM PDT

So due to COVID restrictions, I am unable to physically attend my brothers wedding in October. I still want to be as present as possible though. What are some good tech solutions?

So far the best I have come up with is an iPad on a tripod at the wedding location. With me at home on an iPad. Would still need to figure out the logistics of data usage and battery power.

I'd be happy to answer any follow up questions you might have. Any and all solutions would be greatly appreciated!

Looking for the Best Offline Note-taker Redux - Replace Onenote 2020

    Posted: 16 Sep 2020 09:08 PM PDT

Looking for the Best Offline Note-taker Redux - Replace Onenote 2020

    Basic minimal needs (deal-breakers):

    • Has a support forum and a good userbase
      • ?
    • Has top-level tabs/notes/folders
      • Has sub-tabs/notes/folders
        • (has: Trilium, any generic text editor, etc)
    • Highly prefer top-level tabs/notes/folders on left
      • Sub-tabs/notes/folders at top
        • ??
    • When there's an instance of the app opened, and you open a new instance on a different virtual desktop, it opens a new instance on the current virutal desktop
      • (doesn't have: Trilium)
        • Trilium didn't open anything
      • (doesn't have: joplin)
        • When it's open, and you open another instance in a new virtual desktop, it switches back to the original instance, how to open a new instance in the current virtual desktop?
    • When the new instance is opened, it opens to where you left off / were last at
    • Loads fast
      • (doesn't have: Trilium)
    • Has good fullscreen
      • (doesn't have: Trilium)
        • Can't click on tabs when pointer is at the very top, but you can in chrome other things etc
      • (doesn't have: joplin)
        • Is there no fullscreen??
    • Readable size font
      • (doesn't have: Trilium)
        • Font too large, is larger than all other software/apps/sites out there, bad screen real estate, can't change
      • (doesn't have: joplin)
        • Default font is extremely tiny relative to all other software
        • Zoomed in so much and it's still so tiny
        • Can font be changed to open sans? Is there a list of what fonts can be used??
      • joplin is the 2nd to last of worst options when it comes to the best offline note-taker
    • The average user should be able to use it well, and do the main primary function of what they need
      • etc
    • Does not require/force password / or any logins
      • (doesn't have: Trilium)
    • Does all other very basic things well
      • (doesn't have: joplin)
        • It doesn't fully exit on exit like other apps? How to make it fully exit?
    • Works as-is, works out of the box
      • >?

Please link gif showing what is recommended does the above. Thanks!

    For desktop

    Preferred (non-deal breakers)

    • Clean, modern UI
      • (ie. Trilium)
    • Uncluttered UI
      • `(doesn't have: Trilium)
        • "note info" cluttering up right side, can't disable
        • There's a needless paragraph symbol on left side that cluttering up the screen that you can't get rid of
    • Has good hotkeys / keybindings
      • (doesn't have: Trilium)
    • Can copy rich formatting into it
      • (has: Trilium)
        • "Trilium supports other types of notes WYSIWYG html, plain text,.md, code etc. Joplin only supports markdown."
    • Copies spacing into Reddit well
      • (doesn't have: Trilium)
    • Copies from reddit into software well
      • (doesn't have: Trilium)

Please link gif showing what is recommended does the above. Thanks!

    Written in Trilium

Non-options: Things that are non-options for offline notetaker, doesn't do a ton of any of this, sorted from most usable to most worst

    1. notable (prime/main/solo? dev also confirmed it doesn't do the single basic need asked about initially)
    2. vscode
    3. obsidian

Non-options: Things that were mentioned by some user, but other users said it doesn't do basics

    1. notes by firefox

Any real options for the best offline note-taker?

Is compact file size a priority anymore?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2020 04:10 PM PDT

It seems like Adobe InDesign generates larger PDFs than it used to, which can be frustrating for some of my applications. I speculated that maybe software manufacturers don't put as much effort into producing small file sizes because everyone has fast connections and unlimited cloud storage. Is that a fair assumption?

Is there a way to set up notifications in Slack for when my boss comments in a group chat?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2020 06:08 AM PDT

I am part of several chat groups in Slack that have a lot of activity, and it would be nice if I could get notifications when specific people (like my boss or the CEO) write messages in these busy channels. Would the best way be to set notifications for keywords, and make the keywords their names?

    portable wifi hotspot (unlocked)

    Posted: 16 Sep 2020 03:22 PM PDT

    Hi all,

I am a bit confused and would appreciate your help. I plan on buying an unlocked mifi portable wifi hotspot. It appears that I can use a sim card for the wifi, and i will do that. Can I use any cellphone sim card for this - or is there a specific simcard for the mifi that must be used? Also am I able to add just data to the simcard, without having to pay for a monthly phone plan? I appreciate all information possible. Thanks

How safe is a .exe found in a zipped file?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2020 07:42 AM PDT

Never had this happen before. Downloaded a game. It was zipped. I extracted, but there wasn't an installer, but just an exe. I scanned it with Windows Defender and it didn't pick up anything bad, but when I go to run it, I get a warning from Windows defender that it's preventing the game from opening because it's an unrecognized app. I can override it and run it myself, but I'm very hesitant and haven't done so yet.

    1. Is it normal/safe that there isn't an installer and only an exe? and
    2. If it is safe, then why would I Win Defender prevent it from opening even though it pulled nothing bad back from the scan?

    Thanks!

Will an imported phone support VoLTE and WiFi calling if the network does, or is it more complicated than that?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2020 06:56 AM PDT

Here's the specific situation I have in mind

My carrier here in the UK supports VoLTE and WiFi calling. If I import a Samsung Galaxy Note 20 Ultra from Hong Kong (to get the Snapdragon processor), will these features work on my device? I know the phone supports these, and so does the carrier, but is that enough, or do they have to work together?

The Note supports the same 4G LTE bands as my carrier uses - so is VoLTE just supposed to work? With a VoLTE phone and an LTE network, will calls just automatically go over the LTE network, or does your phone have to be supported somehow?

Same question goes for WiFi calling.

    Thanks!

Resolution bottleneck when using VGA>HDMI adapter? For whatever reason, I can't get it to display 1080p

    Posted: 16 Sep 2020 11:33 AM PDT

I'm trying to connect my Dell Optiplex to two monitors. The machine has a Displayport out and a VGA out. My monitors are Dell u2414h and u2417h. Graphics is Intel HD 4600.

The Displayport to HDMI has no problem outputting 1920x1080.

The VGA > HDMI adapter will only allow a max resolution of 1680 x 1050, no matter what settings i tweak in the Intel Graphics panel

This resolution issue follows whichever monitor is using the VGA > HDMI adapter, although the adapter i purchased supposedly supports 1080p just fine.

    Thoughts?

Is there a way to reset an email?

    Posted: 16 Sep 2020 08:12 AM PDT

I've had an email since for a long time now and when I was younger I was pretty dumb and put it in some scam sites, you know, and now I constantly have spam in my mail. Is there a way to, I dunno, reset my email so it deletes all my subscriptions and stuff?
