Where does EPSON store NVRAM data?

    Posted: 15 Mar 2020 04:34 PM PDT

I'm trying to configure some EPSON TM-U220B Ethernet printers for use with some micros workstations through my work. However, I only have 1 network card with an actual Ethernet port. I Do however, have a ton of RS-232 network cards that I can slot into the printers. What I want to know if where EPSON keeps the physical storage location for their NVRAM. If their Network settings are stored internally, and not in the network card, then I can use the one network card I currently have to find out what the IP addresses are for each printer, configure the settings through web UI, Then slot the RS-232 in and run the connection off those. However, this won't work in the network card is where the configurations are stored...

SeaTools has FAILED the last 2 brand-new SeaGate hard drives I've brought home.

    Posted: 15 Mar 2020 11:04 PM PDT

I coped about 3TB of data to the first one before I ran the test (it failed both short and long generic tests). I saw no signs of a problem, I took it back for another one because of the test results.

Yesterday SeaTools passed my Passport HD, in spite of it getting noisy after >6 hours of copying data to it (the noise has gone, and hasn't returned even while copying even more data from it in a long session - but no diagnosis shows a problem with this drive). CrystalDiskInfo shows the health of both drives to be good. Could there be something wrong with SeaTools on my system? What further tests should I run?

I'm running Windows 7. The hard drives are 4TB portable USB drives.

Deleting a folder I unpacked in after installation?

    Posted: 16 Mar 2020 02:07 AM PDT

    Hi everyone,

For my education I had to download a specific application (ArcGIS Pro). The download came in a .zip format (about 1.5gb).

No biggie of course: I unpacked that joint to a folder on my desktop (resulting in a folder of about 1.5gb).

After unpacking, I installed the program using whatever setup file was in that new folder, which in turn created a folder in my Program Files directory. This folder contains roughly 3.4gb of data.

Since I am working with limited disk space, I have deleted the .zip file. I was wondering if I could also delete the folder I unpacked in (on my desktop). Of course the folder created in Program Files remains untouched.

    Cheers!

Ripping a DVD of a full movie?

    Posted: 16 Mar 2020 01:20 AM PDT

About a year ago, I bought a DVD of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse, because it's one of my favorite movies. At the time, I was living with my family, and we had a DVD player. I've since moved, and no longer have a DVD player; my laptop doesn't even have CD or DVD drive in it. As this is the only DVD I own, it would be silly to buy a DVD player or DVD ripper that I wouldn't have any other use for. But from what I understand, DVD ripping services will not usually rip copyrighted material such as feature films.

Is there any service, or other way, I can get a digital copy of the DVD I own without buying hardware for it (or purchasing the movie again for a digital copy -- I already bought it once!)? I'm half-tempted to buy a ripper, rip the DVD, and then return the reader the next day, but that feels... wrong or inelegant, somehow. Surely there must be a better way, with CD/DVD drives on the extinction curve?

What laptop should I buy? Any recommendations?

    Posted: 16 Mar 2020 12:58 AM PDT

Hi! I'm taking an engineering graphics class that has us working with AutoCad and SolidWorks. My campus is going online now because of the Corona virus and I can't afford to drive almost an two hours everyday just to use the campus computers. Does anyone have any recommendations on what laptops I should consider buying that would be able to run both SolidWorks and AutoCad?

Panasonic DVD S58 Stuck DVD Drawer

    Posted: 15 Mar 2020 08:50 PM PDT

    Hello!

My Panasonic DVD s58 has a stuck DVD drawer. It makes noises when I click open or closed, but will not open. It has no paperclip sized hole for that method. It also doesn't have a channel button to do that trick.

Really could use some help. Any ideas? Thanks!

How to make chromebooks safe for students to take home?

    Posted: 15 Mar 2020 02:09 PM PDT

I am a teacher and we are planning on lending chromebooks to students as we prepare to have extended closures for coronavirus. At school, our WiFi is what prevents students from going on to any unsafe websites. Is there anything we can to do to help protect students before sending chromebooks home?

    Edit*

So we are just a small, catholic school, so unfortunately, no IT department to turn to. Normally our teachers have the time to do a great deal of research before making any technological changes, but due to the sudden closure of schools, we are left to finding a quick and affordable (if not free) solution to this. I have read about Google Safe Search. Which I know is already on our Chromebooks/linked with student's accounts and obviously through the Admin account we can monitor student usage.

How to get rid of SafeFinder on a mac laptop?

    Posted: 15 Mar 2020 01:36 PM PDT

Hey there. My girlfriend has a mac and somehow unwillingly got a browser extension called SafeFinder. It redirects any searching to Yahoo and advertised sites. It's only in Chrome and I cannot find an application in either Chrome extensions or the Launchpad. I got rid of it temporarily by totally resetting her Chrome settings, but it came back somehow.

Does anyone know how to get rid of it for good?

Huge visual difference between consecutive font sizes for monospaced fonts

    Posted: 15 Mar 2020 01:36 PM PDT

I'm running Windows 10 on my laptop that has a 15-inch 1366×768 screen.

In all text editors and terminals, there is a significantly huge jump in font sizes between 10 and 11. The size of monospaced fonts (like Fira Code, JetBrains Mono, etc.) at size 11 are almost twice that of size 10. I don't see this in other fonts like Arial or Georgia. I wish to use a font size that's in between both for my convenience.

Can anyone tell me what's causing this? Is there a solution?

Laptop crashes when GPU is active -HELP!

    Posted: 15 Mar 2020 11:06 AM PDT

Hi, I have a laptop that was state of the art back in 2012.It was bought for gaming, has a gtx 675m however I have had an issue for a long time that has caused me to disable the GPU and use an onboard graphics card on the I7 -3720qm processor instead - which is very insufficient.

The problem is that if I play a game while the GPU is active in the unit control panel, then I will get a crash of the game and very loud beeping sounds me having to hard reboot the laptop. Recently I measured the temperature of the GPU when this occurs and it doesn't reach high temperatures, in fact, the fans haven't even started spinning on the GPU and the temperature is about 60ish celcius.

I have had this problem for a long time and when it first occurred which is years back I tried a lot of different things but eventually gave up and just disabled the GPU, so I could once in a while play a low requirement game. But back then it started with a bluescreen of death. Now when it occurs there's no bluescreen just a crash of the game back to the desktop and after a minute the laptop will beep.

But the problem as started to occur once in a while not so often but still once in a while I get game crashes with the onboard card, it doesn't end up with beeping sounds and I can just restart the game or reconnect. However, this leads me to believe that this is software related or power supply related. I'm by no means an expert I'm just an average user. With a little knowledge of computers.

So I'm happy to provide any information needed in order to solve this issue but I need some guidance.

    Thank you in advance.

Accidentally deleted a whole gallery of pictures.

    Posted: 15 Mar 2020 10:41 AM PDT

Hi! (sorry if my English is bad in advance)

I'm using a Samsung A7(2017) and I happened to accidentally deleted almost a whole gallery of pictures (around 1000-1100 pics). For now, I was able to use play store apps to recover some files but I could only gather a few of them back. I tried many windows programs to try and bring back these files but all of them come with a very expensive price with subscription plans just to recover the files and besides I won't be using the program that much often!

So I was hoping if anyone in this subreddit can recommend me a good, free desktop software that can recover the pictures? Preferably if the program can recover pictures that were taken by the phone's camera, that would be great!

P.S. I deleted them on PC by having the phone connected to the desktop's USB. And the photos I deleted are from DCIM file.

New desktop PC boots with video distortion

    Posted: 15 Mar 2020 05:25 AM PDT

    Hi AskTech,

Hoping somebody might be able to point me in the right direction for an issue I'm having with my new ViprTech Gaming PC Computer Desktop - AMD Ryzen 5 2600, AMD RX 580 4GB, 8GB DDR4 RAM, 1TB HDD, VR-Ready, RGB, WiFi, Windows 10 Pro - OEM. First red flags were that the box was ripped at the handle and, upon opening, one of the four legs at the base that hold up the case was broken off. No big deal if it works. Unfortunately, it does not! Machine boots up and sounds audibly alright but as soon as the monitor (yes ive tried several) catches the input, I am instantly confronted with a series of distorted screens:

    https://imgur.com/a/qCilgMY

I've repeatedly tried dislodging and replacing the video card so that it makes the audible click its supposed to. Ive tried different monitors and different cables (multiple DVI to HDMI as well as HDMI to HDMI). Im not sure what else to try at this point.

Additionally, and im not sure if its related to the graphics issue or an entirely separate problem, but Windows does fail to boot. The last screen i encounter has an actual frownie face and some text Im basically unable to read due to the distortion. The machine then reboots.

Its been over a decade since Ive had the time or means to dive into PC gaming (I was obsessed when I was younger with fewer responsibilities) and I was super excited to re enter the fray with my 1st rig since about 2004. More importantly, I will now need a working desktop essentially by tomorrow due to Coronavirus! Theres a full warranty on the computer so im not suicidal or anything, but i know that it will be days if not weeks before i receive a replacement (viprtech tech support seems to be out of commission despite being listed as open -- cant really blame them with the whole global pandemic situation).

Has anyone else experienced similar issues? I know that im probably providing insufficient information. Thanks for any help you can give.

Sorry for the novel ive been at this all night so writing this up was relatively therapeutic

EDIT: Oh, and if it provides any insight as to what the issue is, there are 2 hdmi slots on the graphics card. HDMI1 does not work period -- monitor shows no input. The pics I posted are what results from plugging into HDMI2.
