    Is USB-C here to stay?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 10:36 AM PST

My work laptop is the new MacBook with only USB-C ports. I hate it but I'm thinking about selling my old personal MacBook (with normal USB ports) so my cables can be consistent.

If I make the upgrade and commit to USB-C, will it be out of date again in 4 years?

Specific Requirements for a Surge Protector

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 09:09 PM PST

I'm looking for a surge protector that I can use in my apartment. However, I have some specific requirements for it. Additionally, I don't really trust Amazon reviews any more, so I did not want to simply find their first best-seller that had these specs.

    • Right angle (flat) wall plug (Preferably rotating... pointing down is not an option)
    • 12ft long cord (Ok if it is a couple feet longer)
    • Can handle a TV, soundbar, chromecast, lamp and lightstrip plugged in
    • Durable cord and strip (will last multiple years)
    • Safe/trustworthy brand (I really do NOT want something that is known to burn, especially since it will be run behind a couch)

Aside from running it behind a couch (along a wall), I plan on following all the typical best-practices for safety. Eg. No daisy chaining, one surge protector per outlet, no power intensive appliances hooked up to it, no moving the cord a lot.

If anybody has any suggestions, please let me know! Price isn't really an issue if it means I'm buying a safe and reliable brand.

So I need a good backup scheme. I also want to know which backup scheme you use for a given list of devices.

List of Devices to be backup :

    1. Phone : iPhone & Ipad
    2. Windows Laptop
    3. Linux: Kubuntu & Arch
    4. Ubuntu Server

Types of data to be backup :

    • Photos, Videos & Some files from iPhone & Ipad ( Every 15 Days (Date-Wise)
    • (Custom Folder Backup For Windows ( Weekly/15 Days )
    • /home folder, Installed Packages, Apt Source Files, Keys, f-disk Backup, MBR backup in Linux (Both Arch & Kubuntu) ( Every 15 Days )
    • I also want to to know in which app or system you use to save articles and websites ( Those you want to read later & Save Permanently )

AQ1: Which cloud system you use for backup for personal data such as ( Resume & Certificates etc ), which can easily accessible from every operating system ( Linux, Windows & IOS).

I have mentioned everything from my side in this post and if you think I've missed something then feel free to tell me.

Need help to identify a Windows desktop APP to backup Android easily

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 06:21 PM PST

So this is my problem, normally when i need a software to do something for me i just google the solution and research and download some and i get to find a GOOD working software, is almost always the case for day o day situations, but i am struggling in here.

What i need in fact is a Software that allows me to do this things, not necessarily all of them, but you get the point:

    • Quick scan the whole phone for Videos, photos, downloaded media and other from the internal and external memory.
    • Quick connect and backup all videos, photos from Android Phone into a Windows folder (using USB of course)
    • Have the capability of being able to chose this content manually, meaning to chose which ones i want to either move to the PC or not.
    • If possible, but not needed, it would be nice that i could chose to delete things in the phone also from the software, even better if it can be done with an option like "Copy and delete from source".

The Software experience i am looking for is this, described step by step:

    1. Connect the Phone to USB, give permissions on phone to sync with Windows PC
    2. Scan the phone for "Media Files", that is Videos, Photos, downloaded content, and maybe other like stickers and nonsense of that kind.

    3. Chose which files you would like to COPY from the Android Phone into any Windows Directory pf my choosing.

    4. Start the moving of the files, and if possible start the deletion of said files on the phone.

    • NO NEED TO INSTALL ANYTHING ON THE ANDROID PHONE

Is that simple, to anyone reading would you believe there is no easy way of doing this?, when you google for "Android backup software" i always get programs that i need to install on my phone !!!, that is most definitively something i dont want to do, i just want a better version of "windows explorer" to just copy things into a folder.

Why not use Windows Explorer, or better software like "Total Commander" or whatever new software exist of this kind?, well... Android file system is annoying, and i want a solution that scans this type of files first and then i chose them, and i dont have to bother moving around the Android file system.

Please help, i have searched a lot, thank you a lot for your time, as far as i know i dont think there is a software exactly as i described it.

Does any Reditor have any cleaver solution for me?.

How to/best way to upload gameplay videos?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 04:26 PM PST

I plan on making a gaming youtube channel and to make this brief my current plan is below and correct me on how I'm wrong or give me useful tips: (i plan to stick to playstation so keep that in mind. Also keep in mind i know very little when it comes to the process of how to record a gameplay video for youtube so don't focus on criticizing my lack of knowledge)

Record gameplay with capture card, film face and audio with separate camera and connected mic (i believe i cant use a live webcam over gameplay on ps4), on editing software I make a duplicate of my camera/mic recording (one is used solely for visual and other is only audio so i can better adjust audio if needed), place camera visual over gameplay, sync the 3 clips, edit it all as one, upload.

I also plan on using filmora since I'm also on a budget. Let me know whats the correct or better way of recording gameplay if I'm wrong or let me know some tips that can make things better (ex: record mic audio over gameplay or through pc on an audio app). I also need to actually buy a pc. I need to know two things. Can i connect my ps4 to a pc and and play games through the same monitor and while using a capture card, and what pc is best for editing videos without paying mad cash (and if i can play ps4 games on pc tell me which is best to both edit and play)

Compressing 45 GB of 720p iPad video

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 06:29 AM PST

I recorded hours of presentations in 30 minute to 2 hour periods on a 2019 standard iPad. The larger videos are 5 GB for 2 hours. Are there any free tools to compress it down to closer to 200->250 MB per hour like a standard Netflix movie? That is 1/10th the size! The quality only has to be good enough to see the slides clearly and listen to the audio. I've tried some free online tools but can't find effective settings to produce a usable file.

    Podcast Tech Issue (Help)

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 03:06 PM PST

My buddy and I are starting a podcast. Neither of us are too great with technology, and we're struggling to find a program that suits our needs. For the time being, we'll be speaking to each other from different states. We don't need to record our faces - we just need to record our computer screens. And we need to record the sound from our screens as well, and we need to be able to hear each other's screens live, and we need to record our microphones as well as hear each other speak. We also need to be able to switch between our two screens live and show each other what we're seeing. We both have our own microphones that are connected to our USB ports. Skype doesn't record screen audio, so that's out. We had the same issue with Google Hangout. Is there a program that suits our needs? Thank you! This has been quite the nuisance.

Stuck in boot loop after firmware update on my phone(Panicking)

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 11:04 AM PST

    Hello.

I have been trying to root my Xperia xz2. Unlocking the boot loader went fine but now I have put myself in deep shit. I tried to use the flash tool "Emma" to flash a firmware update to my device. After connecting the device in flash mode I downloaded the latest firmware update and applied it. After it was done, I booted my phone and it's stuck on the "Sony" logo. I have tried the hard reset (Holding down volume up + power button until it vibrates tree times). I have also tried to reinstall the firmware update using the same method. I just don't know what to do. Please I need help.

HELP!! I need suggestions for a laptop!

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 02:25 PM PST

Help! I don't know what kind of laptop to get!

Hey redditors! So I just started my first semester of college and what do you know, my laptop is fried, i don't want to go through all of the stress of trying to fix it (because it is beyond repair), id rather just double down and get a QUALITY piece of equipment.

I'm looking for a WINDOWS laptop, i don't know anything about RAM or anything like that, but i have a budget of about $600-$800. I want something that's fast, has a lot of memory, and can support games like world of warcraft with excellent video quality and speed. this is the first time in my life that i've actually saved my own hard earned money for something, so i really want to get something that's of quality, and i don't want to drop 8 big ones on just ANY laptop. anyways, also a plus if it comes with microsoft word, movie maker, powerpoint etc. included but that's not the end of the world if you can't find something with a package deal.

Pretty much i'd just be using this laptop for school assignments/research, gaming (pretty much just WoW), maybe a little streaming, surfing the web and also sometimes editing videos, and to be honest i prefer to use movie maker because it's so easy to use. keep in mind i'd rather not have an older laptop, something that's a newer model and has great reviews, something durable and quality, like a mac. but then again i don't know jack shit about computers so maybe a mac is garbage to you computer guys. i was almost going to get a mac but i'm a diehard windows guy and couldn't bring myself to learn a whole new system.

i hope i provided enough information, any suggestions will be AMAZING!!

Question about recovering hardrive Macbook Air

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 02:11 PM PST

    Hi All,

I have a Macbook Air (2015) and the hard drive crashed and I am trying to recover data and brought it to a place that recovers it. That company called me back and said that the solid state drive has failed and areas of the hard drive are damaged. They imaged the drive (areas that are good) and they say it will take about 10 hours of labor total to get back what they can and how much they can get back is uncertain and they are charging $100 an hour. They said if that is too much I can ask for only the back end (most recent stuff) and they will only charge 6 hours of labor. I obviously want everything but this is so much money and I am by no means rich or anything. Is this fair in terms of how much labor something like this can take? Is this a fair price? I'm inexperienced in this area and dont want to get ripped off :/

    Thank you in advance.

Is it safe for me to keep Windows 7 with a solid upgraded antivirus like Kasperski?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 07:25 AM PST

Basically the title. I heard a lot of scary things about Windows 7 not being updated anymore and being more vulnerable to malaware and virus. But I renew my Kasperski subscription every year. Is that enough to guarantee safety and protection for my PC?

Dell Laptop deleting text when I type/edit

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 08:39 AM PST

I have a Dell laptop. Yesterday when I was typing a Google Doc, I went back to the top of the doc to make a change, I clicked my cursor where I wanted to edit, and it just started deleting my whole document from that point forward. It looked like someone was holding down the delete button. It's not the insert button. It's not overtyping. It's deleting everything from where I place my cursor, and there is no way to stop it once it stops. There is no issue if I backspace. I also can't restore to a previous version or undo the action. I thought it might just be a Google Docs issue, but it does it in Chrome and gmail, as well. Is it a keyboard setting? Virus? I can't find anything anywhere!

Is a wireless router actually wireless?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 10:44 AM PST

I've had a router for a few months now. I use it for my PS4 and it works fine. It's connected to the modem in my house, which is not near my room. Is there a way to use the router without it having a LAN or Ethernet cable connected to the modem? I want to be able to have an Ethernet cable from the router to the PS4.

Is end to end encryption important?

    Posted: 20 Jan 2020 06:40 AM PST

Heya. Do I need to worry about encrypting my files before sending them out through email or other means of internet sharing? Could be any kind of personal files - pictures, text documents, links. If so, are free encryption tools good enough? Programs like NordLocker or Cryptomator. If you have any suggestions please let me know.
