Apple Support Stumped. Can You Solve This iPhone Security Riddle ?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 07:49 PM PST

My wife's iPhone 11 pro was stolen right out of her hands, WHILE OPEN/UNLOCKED.

This one's a doozy, with many unique factors coming into play starting with the first fact that the phone was stolen while in her hands unlocked. Spoke with a number of Apple security reps and they're stumped. So if you have the patience to read this story, please consider offering your advice.

Please read carefully. There are many factors to this situation that make it different than a normal stolen iPhone case.

First and foremost, we're abroad in Vietnam. No data/cell service. Simply relying on free WiFi, and GPS tracking.

7:15 PM: My wife stops walking to check our location via GPS on google maps (she was not on WiFi) and I take a few more steps ahead (I'm full of guilt for not stopping as well to remain next to her, but I'm just a few steps ahead when...), a man on a motor scooter rides up on the sidewalk and snatches the phone from her hands and rides off. The phone was open/unlocked. She screams, I turn and start to chase him but he's gone.

7:18ish PM: Immediately we get to WiFi and log in to her "find my iPhone" account on my phone (within 60-90 seconds at the nearest restaurant). But of course, without data service her iPhone 11 is "offline". We set it to erase which says, "erase pending, your iPhone will be erased when it comes online". I encourage us to walk down the block and just keep our eyes open for this guy in case he's the stupid kind of thief that stopped right down the block. No dice.

7:33 PM: We return to WiFi in about 15 mins and check again her "find my iPhone" account. The device is still offline and erase is still pending. I realize that if we "erase" her phone we have no chance of tracking it when it goes online, so we "cancel erase" which prompts her for her password again, and we put it into lost mode. I also select, "notify me when online". I also try to skype call Apple Support, but they're closed. We get back to our hotel in another 30 mins, and check the app again. Still offline.

8:30 PM: We filed a claim with Asurion and another iPhone 11 Pro 256 GB is already on the way to my parents home in the states ($199 deductible in case anyone is wondering). We're laying in bed, bummed about the phone, but more so the violation of having that situation happen. People suck sometimes, but we're Ok I remind us and we go out for some dinner.

9:30 PM: We start having some other ideas, questions and proceed to discuss....the phone was unlocked when he stole it. What if he kept it open while riding away ? He can't log into her Apple ID he would need two factor authentication for that (another one of her trusted devices that are all 6000 miles away at home) At first I thought no big deal, she doesn't have Apple Pay setup and you still need the next level of passwords to access anything important / financial etc. and it should go locked as soon as he goes into WiFi to try anyway.

But we want assurances. So we call Apple support which is now open.

10:30 PM: the guy is mostly assuring us of what we thought. But to be totally certain we should change her Apple ID password. Like I said earlier you need you trusted devices to get your 6 digit, two factor authenticate code.

Ok here's were things get even weirder.

Approx 11 PM: I want to check for her phone again to see if it ever came online and went into lost mode. THE DEVICE IS NO LONGER ON THE LIST OF DEVICES !! Only her old phone, air pods, and iPad. The iPhone 11 is gone ! Apple support who is still on the phone with us tells us the only way that can be done is via her Apple ID.

Our hearts sink. This guy got into her Apple ID ? How ??

Now we're determined to change her password somehow. So we're calling her parents back at home to read us the code from her iPad so we can log in. We got it. We logged in and changed her password.

So fucking weird. But then another weird thing happens.

She's logging into her gmail to change that password too, and we notice a "new login from an iPhone 6 at 9:32 PM one district north of our location. What the fuck ! How did this guy now get onto her gmail account, FROM HIS PHONE ! (I have an iPhone X).

He even deleted the email that emails you when a new login happens from a new device, went to the trash and deleted that forever so we wouldn't see it right away. It was only because we were changing her password that we saw the new login event.

    What a trip.

Now we're up til 1 AM on the phone with another Apple rep and she's genuinely invested and listening to my story, but stumped. How did the phone get deleted from the list of devices ? How did he login to her email on a different device ?

Any hackers out there know how to Do this shit ? I thought Apple had the best security.

Just one last note, my wife is European and all her passwords were pretty complex and in her language (Slovak). A pretty strange language whether you're a Vietnamese and/or English speaker. He didn't trial and error guess her passwords within two hours of getting her phone. They are too difficult and random.

    SRAM, DRAM, and SDRAM

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 07:04 PM PST

I am attempting to gain an understanding of all the parts in the computer and what they do, with the goal of building my own PC. However, I don't quite understand RAM. I understand its purpose, as it works as an intermediary between the CPU and the hard drive, but I don't understand the different types of ram and what exactly they are. I have found the differences between them, such as SRAM is more expensive, and DRAM is slower in comparison. I am also aware of what DDR is and the different models of that. My question is are SRAM, DRAM, and SDRAM all different versions of the ordinary RAM stick? Or are SRAM and DRAM like different parts inside a SDRAM stick? Which is the best version to use in a modern PC? I've found conflicting information online. I have also seen the SRAM called the cache, but are caches in all computer or only computers explicitly with SRAM? I apologize for the over abundance of questions. Any help is greatly appreciated.

    eBay issues

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 11:07 PM PST

So I go to college and there are a few things that I know I need, but probably not first hand, because of the price. So I set up an eBay account, but the moment I attached my paypal to it, I got permanently banned from eBay. Does anyone know why I was banned or how to fix it? Could it be that I have a similar ip since it's a shared network? Or because I haven't used my PayPal since early 2019. Any suggestions help

Can my anonymous camgirl career affect my university's wifi? Will they find out and get me into trouble?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 12:50 AM PST

Hi, r/AskTechnology, I hope I've come to the right place for this question, I'm really desperate for an answer.

Im starting university in a week or so and I'm interested in becomming a camgirl to make some extra money, however I'd have to do this on university wifi and I'm a completely idiot when it comes to anything involving tech, I wanted to know if the live streaming out to the audience and the traffic of the site could affect the wifi or if it could endanger the network as a whole, like affect it with viruses or any spyware?

I've tried to do my research and read the rules and regulations about the wifi and the network at the university but I'm finding it a little difficult to understand.Perhaps these are stupid questions but I'm really not interested in being found out at the university.

I'd also like to know what kind of things my university would be able to see, can they tell if I'm streaming? And on what website I'm streaming?

PS4 Upload Speed Turned to Shit?

    Posted: 23 Jan 2020 12:47 AM PST

I usually have fairly good internet. I live in Australia (so not really good compared to the word but good for a home in Australia) I would have around 35-40 Mbps upload speed so when I played games like fortnite I'd get anywhere to 0-20 ping which I was very content with. Yesterday out of nowhere my ping just jumped up to 300 and wouldn't go down so I turned my PS4 and wifi off for the night and went to bed. Today I tried playing with my friend and my internet was still shit. I unplugged my LAN cable, reset my PS4 and internet and my upload speed is now around 368kbps and I'm getting 400 ping and I don't know why. What's going on, thanks.

Does anyone know of a good way to search and compile news articles?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 01:32 PM PST

    Hey reddit,

I'm doing some research on pedestrian accidents and want to see if I can find a way to collect all of the news articles/reports in the past year on accidents in my area. Does anyone know of a good way to do that?

The best thing I can think of would be to just search the sites and manually download them myself, but that seems way too slow.

Struggling with Laptop or Desktop choice

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 12:11 PM PST

    Hello,

Tl;dr. Does it make more sense to buy a decent desktop and a cheap laptop and just stream my desktop whenever I need it. OR do I just buy a very powerful laptop?

I am struggling with determining the most economical solution to an age old problem. Desktop or Laptop. My issue is that I need the power, both graphical and processing of a desktop. (I am a hobbyist game developer, graphic artist and video maker). But I am still in college and need the portability of a laptop.

Hopefully you can help. (Or point me to a sub that would be better to ask)

Edit: moved things around to make the question more clear

Which (old) phones were the best to play Java mobile games?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 10:35 AM PST

Which (old) phones in the 2000's were the bests to play Java mobile games?

I was searching for some old phones which has Java as its OS. I have a friend of mine studying the development of that kind of games in a Sony Ericsson z750i and I get interested too. But the phone is crashing with some games and my testing files it's not opening.

Reading more about to learn something with this friend, we were talking to some people who used to develop Java games in that times and they told me if I want to test my things and test other games, it's better if I get a better phone (with a better resolution, etc.) but the guy who told me didn't said which phones he means (and he's not answering my e-mails anymore though).

We are actually using a PC for testing but you know, I just want to test it like it's real.

I have no idea which phones are better than others and where I can buy it. I know about that fantastic story of the N-Gage but No. So, do you have any ideas?

My family's Netgear WiFi extender, is nolonger extending the 5g half of our dual band WiFi, how can I fix this?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 08:21 AM PST

We recently switched to Frontier WiFi and the signal is weak upstairs, we have a Netgear WiFi extender that we used with our previous WiFi to boost the signal upstairs. I connected our new wifi to the range extender and it worked fine up until 2 days ago. I used my phone, laptop and Xbox one with the extended 5g WiFi, but can't anymore. In my phone's WiFi settings, it says the extended signal is connected without internet, previously it showed ip configuration error.

Program to analyze and sort client notes??

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 03:07 PM PST

Currently, our office's client notes consists of various hand written sheets of paper. The issue with this method is that we end up searching through piles of notes attempting to find a specific piece of information. I've tried just transcribing these notes myself but it's a tedious task with no end, because we have no proper client database that we all have access to... just these folders of paper. So it's easier to just continue writing everything down instead of constantly switching from one clients notes, typing that info then switching to another and typing that one. For client info like address and phone number we have an updated contact list so for this it's not a problem. It's only the meeting notes that drive me crazy. I'm looking for 2 different things, if possible 1. A software that accurately converts handwritten notes to text 2. A program that can analyze text and sort the data into specific client folders. ie I type all client info onto one sheet, with spaces between each different client notes for that day then it automatically inputs that data into an existing folder for that client

If there are no existing software like this for the company to buy/ subscribe to, am I able to code something to do this? If so what language. I am not the best with technology but if it's able to do what I need it to then I will dedicate time to learn.

Website for public file sharing by username

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 11:13 AM PST

I'm constantly loosing my USBs so I'm looking for a website which I can access from printing shops to print what I need. I would like some site where I don't have to log in and can just access all files just by knowing the username.

So if I want to download my files I would just go to website.com/username.

Should I get a Wifi Repeater, Extender, or Second Router?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 04:42 AM PST

My 3 roommates and I are going to share internet service with our 2 downstairs neighbors.

    My understanding is:

Extender: increases the range of your router

Repeater: makes a copy of the signal from the existing router

Second Router: effectively the same as getting a repeater

    Is that correct?

So is getting a repeater the better option than the extender since we'll have so many people using the connection?

    Thanks!

Hot do you open a Port on a Modem?

    Posted: 22 Jan 2020 06:14 AM PST

    Hello there,

I am trying to setup a Port on my Modem so I can host an Arma 3 Sever from my PC for me and my friends. Problem is, I have no clue how to access the Admin menu for my Modem. It is a Thomson Model THG571. Now i know that you have to figure out the IP address of the Modem. I tried about half a dozen of addresses(internal, External, via Ip finder or cmd), not one of them working (both with Firefox and internet explorer) . Needless to say, i have no clue what I am doing wrong. How do I access the Admin Menu for this Modem? How do I find the Correct IP Address? Any Idea what I am doing wrong? (Maybe related to the firewall or another obvious setting?)

Edit: Forgot to mention that the Pc isn't directly connected to the Modem. It connects first to an Apple Time-capsule (Model A1470) and from there to the Modem. Could that be a Problem with accessing the Admin Menu for the Modem or the local Ip Address?

Edit 2: The Time-capsule actually works like a Router. Setting up a Port on that end is easy via the "Airport" program from Apple. But I'm still unsure if this is enough or if I also have to do it for the Modem.
