Ping decreases when downloading, why? Posted: 26 Nov 2019 07:03 PM PST So in my area I have Mediacom. There is no competition and I'm stuck with them. I think they've oversold my neighborhood and I'm getting really poor connections when doing online gaming. I've been using ping plotter to monitor my connection and I've noticed an interesting trend. When my internet is mostly idle, I have horrid latency, I'm talking 1000+ms. However, when I download a torrent (put internet under load) my quality of service magically gets better. What is going on? Here is a graph of my latency to google, you can clearly see when I'm underload and not. [link] [comments] |
I can’t play video games on my xbox any time after 8pm due to latency problems. Posted: 26 Nov 2019 06:48 PM PST It started happening last weekend. My ping will always be above 100ms on any game. I have spectrums top package in my area (up to 400mbps) and when testing my network statistics, I got: Download: 99.40mpbs Upload: 22.01mbps Latency: 104ms Packet loss: %0 Signal strength: %75 Someone please help me with this. It didn't happen before and I am on a 5ghz signal right beside my router and modem. [link] [comments] |
Camera system without internet or power available Posted: 26 Nov 2019 03:51 PM PST Let's start with saying I am ignorant of technology so I'm looking for some help. I have a house that has been vandalized several times so I was hoping to install a couple of cameras. I do not have power or internet service at the home. Is there a way to do this with battery or solar power and transmit to my cell phone or would the data have to be stored on site? I am assuming the cameras will be stolen or destroyed if they are seen is the reason I was hoping to capture the data either on my cell phone or home computer. Thanks for any advice you may have. Posted: 26 Nov 2019 04:01 PM PST When my committed memory gets too high (like 20+ Gigs), I like to restart my computer to refresh the memory because sometimes my computer can't keep up with it and will crash applications, but it's kind of inefficient to do so. Is there a setting somewhere I can turn on that allows me refresh it when I simply turn my computer off for the night? I have Windows 10. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Nov 2019 07:25 PM PST Hello, I have a Lenovo Yoga 900 laptop that is about 4 years old now. Ive noticed recently that my charger only works when it is in specific positions, and in its normal, relaxed position it does not charge my laptop. Is there any way to tell if whether this is a charger issue or whether its a laptop issue that doesn't include buying a new charger to test it out? One possible noteworthy thing - the charger is like a modified USB. When I first got the laptop I had the charger in my backpack and it got a little smushed and the upper, empty half of the USB charger closed in on itself. I was able to use a coin to more or less open it back up so the charger could plug into my computer again, and I never had any problems after that. Not sure if that could play a role in whats happening now, just thought I would mention. Thanks [link] [comments] |

Posted: 26 Nov 2019 05:42 AM PST Hi guys, I'm working with a charity organisation that is trying to find a way to streamline one of its processes.
The manual way takes a long time and people make mistakes or forget steps. It feels like there has to be a better way of doing this. We don't have a huge budget. If there is a way for it work on mobile that would be a great boon to the guys in the field. Can anyone please suggest a way that we can do this? Thank you! [link] [comments] |

Digital Podium Build Suggestions Posted: 26 Nov 2019 08:06 AM PST Good Morning All, I have been tasked with setting up a digital podium for use at conventions. We currently have a steel framed lectern with a 42 inch flat screen mounted in portrait orientation to the front of the frame. Our goal here is to play video files or graphics that can change dynamically depending on who the speaker is and what is going on on-stage. For example, John Smith walks to the podium, we want to remotely play the video intro for John Smith - when John Smith walks off and Jane Doe walks up we can then cue the file for Jane Doe. Obviously we can't have a user interface show in-between speakers, and we'd prefer not to have any black frame drops or hitching or anything like that. Full power to the lectern will be provided, and I assume most conventions will have internet but we'd prefer to have these files stored locally for speed and reliability purposes. I've explored some digital signage options like screen.cloud but haven't come across a way to manually navigate video files on demand (either via physical remote control, or some other interface). We aren't restricted by budget, but would prefer to have something friendly with macOS. Any insights or suggestions on solutions is greatly appreciated. [link] [comments] |
Posted: 26 Nov 2019 11:51 AM PST I'm aware that technology already exists, but I need to construct one of my own from scratch in order to win a contest. No previously made items can be entered in order to win. Must be 100% made by me. Any books, YouTube videos or classes that would help will be greatly appreciated. Thank you. [link] [comments] |

Posted: 26 Nov 2019 11:04 AM PST I'm really passionate about this, I've wanted to code since I was 7 (I'm 22 now) but never did bc I've been caught up in a life of self-sabotage and procrastination. I'm terrified I will never be good at anything, so please reassure me that I am worthy of my passion and lend me any insight on how long it typically takes in the worst case scenarios to aid me in tracking my progress, setting goals for myself, and to help me recognize my own milestones so I can freaking celebrate them for once and not be mad at myself 👀🥳 codingwithdepression 🥵[link] [comments] |
Interested in Cyber Monday tech stories and advice Posted: 26 Nov 2019 10:54 AM PST I'm writing a blog post about what the tech world does to prepare for the hordes on Cyber Monday. I am looking for stories to share. They can be both success and horror stories about experiences had while navigating the chaos. I'm also looking for real-world advice for tech/IT professionals who might be facing their first Cyber Monday or are studying to enter the tech field (in any capacity). If you'd like to join the conversation but would not like to have your story referred to in the post, that's a ok. Just let me know. Thank you for the insights! [link] [comments] |

Any way to get a monitor's serial number from some firmware? Posted: 26 Nov 2019 10:36 AM PST Alright, so this is a pretty long shot, but I will try anyway. I have a monitor that recently stopped working. Fortunately, it's still under warranty. But the company that provides warranty repairs for AOC where I'm based require the monitor's serial number. They advise me that the serial number can be found on a sticker on the reverse of the monitor. But lo and behold, I have peeled that off because .... unfortunately ..... OCD. (I genuinely didn't think those stickers contained any useful information and have always just peeled them off after setting them up along with those tacky energy-saving ones on the front). So I'm wondering whether there's any way to obtain the serial number from a firmware level of perhaps even from the operating system (I'm on Ubuntu). It seems pretty ridiculous to me to think that those stickers are the only place it would be noted but until I figure out a way to obtain it I can't get my repair. Any tips appreciated. And I will not be peeling stickers off monitors again! [link] [comments] |
How do I combine the storage from 2 SSD cards? Posted: 26 Nov 2019 09:24 AM PST I've been trying to combine my new SSD with my old SSD card. However, when I select the option to extend volume on the 'main' SSD it does not show the new card as an option to be added. I've been trying to troubleshoot this issue online but haven't found a solution up till now. I'd really appreciate any input on this. [link] [comments] |

Is it possible, or feasible, to simply cut China off from the internet? Posted: 26 Nov 2019 06:51 AM PST I mean, economics and politics aside, if the right people supported this, would it be possible, technology-wise? Like a sort of reverse great firewall. [link] [comments] |
