How is this this possible? (Possibly related to cookies permissions somehow but still wth)

    Posted: 22 Dec 2020 03:50 AM PST

    A little bit of backstory:

My grandma just called me with her 2004 nokia phone asking me to buy her carp "horseshoes" for the Christmas as she can't get to store herself at the current situation. Ten minutes after the call I was randomly browsing through Instagram on my phone and suddenly an ad for precisely this product (Carp horseshoes) popes up on my wall.

I haven't made any searches for this product or anything even related to the store that sells them (and where I planned to go buy em) on my phone at all. The only mention of them ever in my life was this one call where she verbally asked for them.

I would normally brush it off as a pure coincidence, however this isn't at all the first time something like this happened (just a week ago we were discussing something quite specific with a colleague in person and afterwards he returned to his desk, opened Facebook or so and voila, the precise matter of the discussion poped up for him in an ad.

Several other such instances occurred in my life in last couple of months, to the point where it's beginning to seem quite suspicious, rather than only random series of occurrences.

I am not sure if this is even the right sub to ask something like this but I have no idea where to go with this as the only thing coming to mind is some AI secretly listening to everything we say even with phones in our pockets and then connecting it to our cookies somehow, but that just sound like a really far fetched conspiracy theory and I'd like to avoid answers like that.

Just shut off my next alarm

    Posted: 22 Dec 2020 03:49 AM PST

Kind of a dumb question, but on android how do I just stop my next alarm from going off? I get up at 530 am and have a back up alarm at 545, is there a way for my alarm to just not go off at 545, but stay turned on for tomorrow?

    Capacitive input. Just a rant.

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 03:08 PM PST

I understand why devices use capacitive buttons, but why in the world do device manufacturer's insist on keeping those buttons so hard to see? 2 examples in just my living room are the cable box, which has a completely black face, but when you touch it, it will light up the face and show where the buttons are, of course this only works if you touch it on one of those buttons you can't see to begin with. My other example is my TV. It has no physical buttons to press. It does have the capacitive buttons though, only on this device they don't light up at all and the only way to see them is to actually shine a light on the panel. Your room lights will not show them, it needs to be a light source directly pointed at it. I get not having buttons on a device makes it look sexier and high-tech, but for the love of god make the damn capacitive buttons light up when I touch the device and don't require I hit the capacitive buttons dead on when I can't see them to begin with. Any touch anywhere on the device should cause the buttons to light. And don't manufacturer a device without lit capacitive buttons (Samsung) at all.

Faulty Touch Screen, Need advice on any possible way to interface it.

    Posted: 22 Dec 2020 01:05 AM PST

Hello everyone, couple of months ago, My Huawei Y9s screen stopped registering any input. The screen is barely visible but it acts like a non-touch screen, it started when I started using sanitizers on my phone. I am outside of the country where i bought it and the pandemic has closed all repair shops near me.

My phone uses Android 9.0 (Pie), EMUI 9.1, has a USB type C, and password is enabled. The screen is LTPS IPS LCD and not waterproof. It is also not rooted.

I'm wondering if there is any way I can

    a) fix the screen on my own or

    b) if there is any way I can control it remotely through my mouse and laptop

thank you for reading till here, Please help me

Cell Boosters in Business Environments - How would IT approach this?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 06:27 PM PST

    Hey all,

Working IT. Got a request last week for a business we support. They have poor cell reception in their building (mostly metal) and would like us to find a solution. We reached out to a low voltage contractor we work with and got a suggestion for a massively expensive solution.

Besides working with LV installers, where else could we begin? This is a little beyond the scope of our normal work and experience. I've played with a mobile one once but not a full on roof-ceiling installation 30' off the floor.

    Thanks for any insight.

    OS Options for slow laptop.

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 01:39 PM PST

Hello! I recently inherited a laptop that seems to run at 100% disk at all times and I'm hoping to be able to remedy that by switching to a Linux distro and I'm wondering if someone has any recommendations.

It's got an i5-7200U with 12GB RAM. Not sure if I could potentially just fix the maxed out disk usage issue, but I've tried different things from searching online with no help.

A video calling solution for elderly.

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 09:40 AM PST

Hello, with the pandemic going on I would like to gift my grandma a video calling tablet. She is not very tech friendly so I would like it as easy as possible.

Preferred requirements: - answering is easy. - preferred a standing piece rather than something held in hand. - hard wired no charger.

I found this https://www.viewclix.com/shop/. Which looks like it checks all the boxs. But I have not found many reviews on the product.

    Anyone have any suggestions?

    Thanks!

Could programs that are used to design the most viable 3D printed part be used to calculate how humans should run?

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 08:35 AM PST

In the running community there is a discussion on what the correct way of running is.

    The technology is explained here:

8:29 and more specifically the quote starting at 9:15 about bio shapes

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=A5Fpr7g7plE

So our bones, having been evolved in to the shapes they have, have been shapen to accomodate running in a specific way. If one were to run this program with the given shape of the bones and the given forces of running, could it be possible to reverse engineer the correct way of running? The answer would probably be the least amount or force exerted on the bone per stride, which is what the program looks for.

    Bluetooth doesn't work at all

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 09:48 AM PST

So I just finished building my first PC (Ryzen 7 3700x and MSI B550 GAMING EDGE WIFI) everything about it went smoothly except for when I tried to connect my beats solo pro to my computer. At first, it would say the device is connected and plays audio. But when I put my headphones on the audio doesn't play at all with the exception of some very distorted static-like audio of the song I was trying to listen to every now and then. Then later on within that day I connected to it again but this time all it said was just "connected" it didn't say audio after that or anything like that. When I put it on to see if theirs any audio nothing came out, not even the static every now and then. I checked to see if this problem was only with my beats or if it had the same problem with my other Bluetooth headphones and the same issue persisted with my other devices. I then checked if it was a problem with audio in general but when I plugged in a wired headset it worked perfectly. So then I tried updating my Bluetooth and audio drivers in the device manager, but it said that everything was already up to date. So then I completely uninstalled them and then reinstalled them but that didn't work either. I then updated my bios to see if that would work but of course, that didn't work either. I then checked to see if it would show up in the playback and it doesn't show at all, even though it shows up in the device manager. It also doesn't show up in the manage sound devices section of settings either. Can anyone help me with this?

Listening to 2 different audio sources.

    Posted: 21 Dec 2020 05:23 AM PST

    Hi there,

So here's my dilemma, I have a nice gaming rig that I really not only enjoy gaming on, but learning to use unreal engine via online learning. Unfortunately, my 2 year old son loves listening to his kid videos on YouTube. My question is this: Is there a way to make it so he could use one set of headphones to listen to YouTube, while I use a separate one for my own learning/gaming?
