Could a neural network or other machine learning algorithms serve as an unstoppable computer virus?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 05:50 PM PST

Could a computer virus be made using machine learning of some type such that in the "wild" it will learn new ways to expand and get around OS updates and such? maybe even learn how to be completely un detectable and spread to every corner of the Internet and be basically unstoppable as it would get more complex as computers advance?

Storing files online: What's the best, budget friendly option?

    Posted: 07 Dec 2020 12:49 AM PST

I like storing all my documents, images, videos etc on a removable hard disc (I think it's called? my apologies if not!) as well as online.

It just makes me feel a lot safer, knowing that if one storage system fails I have the other.

Up till now I have been using Google Drive, I even created a separate account just for storage purposes. However the storage options are still limited, and they are changing their policy next summer so I wish to find a replacement.

I require something online for easy access as well. I don't mind paying a one time fee, or even a small yearly fee. But I just do not have the money to pay monthly, or a huge sum all at once.

Is there a budget friendly (or maybe even free?!) option to store things online?

Or am I asking for too much? :(

    Thank you!

I think my MacBook is thermal throttling. I got 5.8 fps with the fans turned down, and 16 fps with the fans at full blast. How can I see how much throttling is happening? I don't see it in the activity monitor.

Are RSS feeds still much in use? If not, what (if anything) has superceded them?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 12:36 PM PST

I'm working on a project that will have a feed of information and I want to make it available to the public. RSS is exactly the sort of thing that would be fit for purpose, but I don't know if anyone really digests information using RSS any more.

Can a Manufacturer See if a Laptop is Being Used

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 05:48 AM PST

I have a sneaky suspicion that the laptop I bought from gumtree is stolen. But I won't go into the details of that right now.

Basically, I paid for this now so I want to keep using it. My question is, can a Manufacturer (ASUS in this case) see if a product is being used and is online (from the serial number, mac address etc)? So if it was indeed stolen from them, can they see that is is now being used, and could I get in trouble because of this?

    I hope this makes sense.

How to share dual monitors between 2 PCs?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 01:32 PM PST

I have dual monitors and I'd like to share them with both my laptop and desktop. The laptop has only 1 HDMI out port, while my desktop with it's Nvidia 2060 plugs into 1 monitor via HDMI and the other via DisplayPort. How can I share these 2 monitors with these 2 devices? I don't need to share my mouse and keyboard because I have a Logitech mouse keyboard that can switch between the 2.

Can I do something to make this wireless charger work?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 01:01 PM PST

I purchased some Oh Snap grips as well as a magnetic wireless charger. Apparently the phone case is a little too thick and the wireless charger won't work (I've tested it on the same phone without the case and it works).

    http://imgur.com/a/6OyNnqM

I am not very familiar with how wireless chargers work. Is it mostly the distance from the phone or does the amount of material between have a significant effect?

I am wondering because if I could shave out the inside of the phone case to reduce the material I am willing to do that. If it is almost all because of distance then there is probably no point. I am looking for a solution, but I am more curious than anything. The phone case was only $5.

    Thanks.

Have never had trackview but apparently it has me

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 06:16 PM PST

Super creeped out and maybe someone can answer what the heck happened here.

So I'm going through my gallery as one does on a lazy sunday night and turns out my phone recorded my entire day from leaving my house to being in the car with my mom to the shopping we did (dont worry we had masks). There were over 300 videos and they were all watermarked "trackview.net". Thing is I don't have that app installed. Never have. I have no idea what else in my phone would have given permission to do that. I'm someone who is already a bit paranoid of what technology can do so needless to say I've gone through all my activity settings and turned everything off.

Does anyone have any idea what would have caused this? Are these videos now out there somewhere? I've never had this happen before and like I said, seriously creeped out.

Why do people say your ip# is secret?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 05:39 PM PST

I understand why the MAC address would be secret because that identifies your actual computer. But IP addresses seem to almost all be the same. They are usually something like 192.128.0.1 or something like 10.74.0.0 or something like that.

Also when I did ifconfig on my computer, I wanted to see my IP address but it gave me a whole long thing with like titles like gif0:, and bridge0: and all these things.

My IP address seems to be 127.0.0.1 but that's like a common one right? How can that identify me, if that is everyone's IP address? Then it says netmax and some numbers and letters, mostly 0's.

Anybody able to clear this up for me lol. Thank you!

How would I go about legally watching CBC, CTV, and Global in Canada for free/a one time fee? Is it also possible to use a PVR? What would I need to know about to proceed?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 10:49 AM PST

I'll be watching tv with others that would MUCH rather use a TV rather than a phone, which is why I bought a Roku. I tried to get all 3 channels on Roku but the only way is to get CTV and CBC is to pay for a subscription to Vmedia.

I have a dumb TV, so anything smart TV related won't work unless I buy one.

Build a Desktop and Remote Desktop Gaming?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 12:01 PM PST

In the new year I'll be looking to replace mine and my wife's laptops as they are getting old and slow. I've been thinking about potentially building a ncie desktop pc then using a cheap laptop (maybe Chromebook?) to remote desktop into the desktop from anywhere in the house so that we can have the performance of a high end desktop with the portability of a laptop. I'm not sure though if this will be more of a headache than its worth. I was hoping to get your guy's thoughts on a few things:

Will this setup work in general?

Is a Chromebook a good choice?

Will there be too much lag when gaming on the laptop for this to be worth it? Neither of are heavy gamers but we do some casual gaming and would look to get more into gaming if we had a computer that could handle it.

I understand we'd likely need a strong network to use this setup. We have gigabit internet to the house, but are just using the isp router which doesn't seem to work all that well. I'm interested in any recommendations or things to consider around this. Our house has cat5e to most of the rooms and I've used the network to setup a second access point before with some success.

We would be using the desktop for all kinds of things. Gaming, CAD, Photoshop, general web browsing. I also have a 3d printer and cnc machine that I would be running from the laptop (maybe through the desktop?). Looking for suggestions in how to best manage this.

I've recently purchased an Oculus Quest 2 and would pote tially look to try PCVR through virtual desktop for Oculus from the pc.

I know there are a lot of potential uses being considered here so I'm mostly interested in hearing reddit thoughts on if this is an idea worth researching more or if there are too many potential issues for it to work out. I appreciate anyone's thoughts around this or anything I might have missed.

Use my iPhone as microphone on PC for screen recording

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 10:01 AM PST

So I plan on record some tutorials and I don't have wired headset or microphone. I tested mu Bluetooth headphones and my iPhone 11 has better mic quality.

I'm wondering if I can use my iPhone and somehow connect it to my PC and use OBS Studio and record screen video and use mic from phone? Is that possible?

I could record voice on phone and combine it with video but I guess it would be painful if miss correct timing and whole video can be not synced.

I wouldn't want to spend $$$ on mic I'll probably never use after that...

How much does a Yahoo Redirect virus hack into your computer?

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 08:43 AM PST

I accidentally got a Yahoo Redirect virus this morning, which made every google chrome tab I opened turn into a Yahoo one. I reset my browser settings to default which seemed to fix the problem, but I'm wondering 3 things:

    a) would the virus still be on my computer somehow?

    b) did it only hack the google chrome application/browser, or does it have access to my whole computer?

    c) what can I do to prevent this in the future? My Mac address was spoofed when I got the virus and I spoofed it to a different address once I fixed it, and I am using duckduckgo now.

Wondering how to play a game with a DirrctX 12.0 video card.

    Posted: 06 Dec 2020 07:20 AM PST

So all I'm wondering is how to play a game (Apex legends specifically) on a DirectX 12.0 video card. Every time I open up the game it just says: DirectX 11.0 video card required. I have looked and looked for a solution, but I haven't found one yet. Any input would be helpful.
