Why aren't browsers in charge of web cookies policies yet?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 03:31 AM PST

Honestly, as most of you, I'm super tired of these banners of "Here accept cookies or else" stuff. Just because around the globe some goverments agreed on making the web navigation worse by making these banners compulsory. We know that in many websites cookies are needed to make them usable while in other cases there are malicious websites trying to collect every move you do. And it's somehow fine to have control over the type of cookies. But there is another way to achieve the same, just in a better way.

I have come to the idea of making this stuff responsbility of browsers. Let me explain.

Let's say that your browser implements this function: You have an icon, just styled like an extension button, in order to communicate internally with the website currently visited. The website would send information to the browser telling what kind of cookies it uses, and the browser would just have this information there in that button section. If the user wants to enable/disable specific (or all) cookies, he just needs to click on that browser icon section and see "This website uses this and this" with a toggle button each cookie. That way, internet and its experience would be way better, with less css content creating huge banners that degrade the experience and visuals.

You have no idea the amount of people that actually aren't handy with computers and they leave the banners there taking sometimes 50% of screen size (having resolution, zoom and windows screen visuals into account), similiar to what the old Internet Explorer used to suffer with the thousand search bars, leaving in some cases less than 25% of screen height to see the web content.

I think this is a viable idea and if we push enough in this direction we can make it possible.

PS. I know we have extensions to disable/ get rid of this and that, but I'm an advance user that know this exists and can set it up. But this is not about power users. It's about improving the whole. I'm talking about web programmers to be able not to implement horrible pop ups. About to have a better World Wide Web.

    Share your considerations.

How to see popularity of websites/traffic data for free?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 12:18 AM PST

I'm trying to do some research on what the most popular online news sources are in the US. TV ratings seem to be mostly public so I have a general idea how well CNN and MSNBC stack up to Fox News, but I'm at a total loss for online data. For example, if I wanted to know whether Reason.com or The Huffington Post had more site-views in a month, how would I know that? It's incredibly frustrating because I have no idea where to even begin to look: articles aren't like YouTube videos where you can see data by right-clicking. I have no idea if a given op-ed was read by a million people or was just the isolated ranking of one columnist.

I've tried so hard, but it seems as though internet traffic data is kept behind paywalls and specialized services like Alexa.

    Warzone FPS cap?

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 04:39 AM PST

    Hey guys,

So i have a 2080 super by nvidia, ryzen 9 3900x cpu, 32gb ram, 1tb ssd and my framerate for warzone is around 145fps and it should be around 200fps on the lowest 1080p settings, it makes no sense, can someone please help me. I have updated all drivers and windows is up to date.

    -G sync is off
    - render resolution is set to 100%

    - got ray tracing and v sync off

-i went into BIOS and made sure its running at 3200 megahertz

-tried with a cap on fps and without a cap on fps in graphics settings

I have no idea why my fps is so low, i know people who have this same set up and get around 200+ fps on 1080p lowest settings, i tried a 165hz 1080p monitor and it stays around 165ish during a game of warzone and on 1440p lowest settings i see 150 as a max and sit around 120 fps majority of the time

    TV recommendation for parents

    Posted: 15 Nov 2020 04:38 AM PST

    Hi all,

I'm looking at purchasing a TV for my parents, within a budget though. I myself own an LG C9 so would like to give them the best bang for the buck.

I'm leaning towards Hisense U7QF as it looks the best in terms of tech (hdr10, DV) but from this list what would be your recommendations?

    https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1PQYWJf07nRSRQfL84BwQjFpwuufn2djMmKxyYBJFMww/edit?usp=drivesdk

    Many thanks!

What are the most volatile areas (in terms of income) in programming related things in the uk as an online business where a self employed person can manage on their own? Or areas where there is a pattern of growth from low to high income?

Can you recover files after factory reset?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 08:02 PM PST

A while ago I sold my chromebook to a stranger on facebook. I factory resetted it a week before handing it to its new owner.

Today I read online that you can pretty much recover anything with some effort, so I'm wondering if they can recover my old stuff in the chromebook?

I'm not expecting some world-class hacker. The person I sold to is a teen girl hoping to make Youtube videos with it

Where should I put my WiFi devices? I cannot move the router and there are many walls and tunnels

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 03:32 PM PST

So I have only one spot to install the WiFi router, and that is in the living room, attached to a wall, where there is the phone socket.

There are two rooms using wifi but the signal must do like a "labyrinth path" to reach the devices using the WiFi, like a Z path, or a S path. (If we ignore walls obviously)

I was wondering, right now my computer is like 10 meters from the router, and the signal must do the "S path" in open air (plus the walls), OR I can move the computer in the opposite wall that is shared with the Living Room and thus be like 30cm? from my router, and having only wall as separator. The signal is probably faster and more powerful going through a wall than doing 10 meters in a S-Z path bouncing everywhere? Is this correct, should I do it?

I don't know, I tried to google this but didn't find exactly where to put my device

Just want to know if moving PC straight to the wall confining router is good or should I let the signal travel through air/walls regardeless of the poision.

    Thanks have a nice day!

    Hi,

I recently purchased a powered USB hub because my keyboard wasn't getting enough juice to power the LEDs on it. The powered hub as four slots. My question is, if I fill the other slots, will it draw power away from my keyboard?

    Thank you

Using WIFI Thermostats in unusual situations

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 07:45 PM PST

Furnace WIFI Thermostats. I want to use WIFI Thermostats to run electric base board heaters in a mountain cabin.

Option 1: I have a transformer to run the smart thermostat (c wire and all). I have 12vdc power supplies and 3-30vdc relays from an old Sauna. One solution seems to be to have the thermostat call for heat using output 24vac, to a rectifier to convert it to DC and then to the relay that will trip the baseboard heater (220v; one leg). Any problems/suggestions?

Option 2: Another approach would be to run 12v DC through the thermostat. Pulling the jumper between the R (heating) and the Rc (cooling), It seems that the Red (R) to White (W) is just a switch but can you run DC through a AC thermostat. So, can you run the WIFI smart thermostat with the transformer to the C terminal and to the Rc (with jumper plulled), and can you run a 12v DC supply to the R terminal and White terminal to the DC relay (to trip the electric heat) back to the 12v DC power supply. I'm not sure as WIFI Thermostats maybe isn't a mechanical switch but rather solid state . Any problems/suggestions?

Will the Turtle beach stealth 700 gen 2 work with my Xbox s

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 08:51 AM PST

Exactly what the title says really.

I'm looking for a Christmas present for my son and these seem like a good fit. However some retailers say that they are only for use with the the ps4 and ps5 whereas others say that they are perfect for Xbox.

I'm wondering if they are just marketed to favour a certain console on different retailers similar to how some video games are advertised by exclusively Xbox or PlayStation.

    Thanks in advance.

    m.2 SSDs

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 08:43 AM PST

How do multiple m.2 SSDs work? do they combine in a raid 0 like format and both show up as the C/: drive or can they show up as 2 separate drives?, I'd like to know because I plan on installing my windows 10 pro 64 bit onto the m.2 SSD of my motherboard, and I would rather it not share files between 2 SSDs incase of 1 of them dying, or being replaced

As a consumer, what is a good mechanical keyboard to buy and use for a while?

    Posted: 14 Nov 2020 07:15 AM PST

Something that is full sized, comfortable to use and has backlighting so I can use it in the dark. I have watched a lot of videos and read some articles on them but they're all so fixated on "the best" that they don't tell me if it's good for the consumer. Tech review channels focus on short term usage without having the appropriate experience for long time issues and articles are usually just inflated trash.
