Can my employer see my google search while WFH?

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 03:14 AM PDT

Throw away account for obvious reasons. I'm working from home right now on my own device but I connect through my company's VPN. I foolishly googled for a specific porn video to send my wife because she was out of town the other day.

Can my company see what I searched on Google? If they can, how likely is it for anyone to actually see it? I work at a pretty big company. Do IT departments usually have a thing set up to catch keywords like "porn" and then a person would go in and dig through my history to see exactly what I was doing?

Advice on buying first new laptop since 2013

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 02:25 AM PDT

Hi Reddit tech experts! I am seeking recommendations on buying my first new laptop in a long time. My mid 2013 Macbook Air with core i7 and 8 MB RAM has been an absolute champ, but it is now on its third battery and starting to grow long in the tooth. With so many more options on the market now, I thought I'd come to Reddit for some unbiased advice.

    Some notes on my preferences:

    • Loved the durability, portability, longevity, keyboard, and great battery life of my Air
    • Could do with a slightly bigger screen on my next device. Touchscreen is a plus but not a must.
    • Not big on the Apple ecosystem - I have an Android phone and a Lenovo Duet as a secondary device and generally prefer Google's ecosystem, though I've seen improvements from Microsoft lately and am open to Windows devices. Wary of confining myself to a Chromebook.
    • Don't need massive computing power - most of my work is in G Suite and Word, Excel, etc.
    • Not a huge gamer but would like to keep gaming options open if possible
    • Don't want to spend more than ~$1200

Thanks in advance for any recs, particularly with Black Friday coming up!

How to change free scroll icon? W10 + Opera + Breeze Cursor

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 01:49 AM PDT

I'm using a custom mouse cursor set and everything is working fine, but there's a thing I don't understand. There's an icon, when I use the click on mouse wheel to free fast scroll, that won't change.

    I'm talking about this : https://drive.google.com/file/d/1OfKMmd_BH5exT3QjTRKLSQHcMCTcrt6v/view?usp=sharing

My OCD can't rest in peace until I find a way to change that icon to pair with my cursor set.

    Please help.

Info : w10 homeBrowser : OperaCustom cursor set : KDE Breeze Cursor

    iPad question

    Posted: 22 Oct 2020 01:45 AM PDT

    Hi all,

I am new to iPad and all I wanted is an iPad that is good for reading slides, writing notes and reading papers. I am a PhD student and basically my usage is limited to looking at scientific papers and writing notes, etc.

What model and screen size should I be looking at?

    Many thanks in advance

Why these samsung charger cables have different prices? Are there any significant specifications for an avarage user?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 11:19 AM PDT

I broke the tip of the cable that came with the phone so I wanted to buy another typeC to typeC cable. When I went online I saw these two different cables with different prices. The cables I found are Samsung EP-DA705 TypeC Samsung EP- DN975 5A TypeC. The DA-705 is almost 50% cheaper than DN9975 why is that??

A way to have remote access into my dad's phone?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 05:29 PM PDT

I am in the US, my dad is in Singapore. He is having some issues with his phone, and I would like to help him with it, but it seems complicated and the best way it seems is to just have access to the settings on his phone. Is there an app to do this? I googled TeamViewer and they are saying it is a Paid app now -- hopefully we can get something that is free, since we are only using it minimally.

Also, he is technologically challenged, so as simple a solution as possible (i.e. as much done by me as possible) is appreciated. He is able to download and install apps, though, just not sure if he would understand any kind of set-up, especially if it is in English.

A hairy situation, I know -- thank you for your help!

Do cell phones communicate with each other behind the scenes when in close proximity?

    A little problem

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 03:40 PM PDT

My dads phone is a samsung note 8, and there is this thing where if you swipe from the bottom corner, 1/4 of a circle pops up with various apps and shortcuts, I don't know the name exactly but I think it is either LazySwipe or OmniSwipe, I was wondering if there is a way to disable this feature, it pops up when he doesn't need it and is in the middle of something like a game. I hope this is the right place to ask this.

Will leaving one side of HDMI cord unplugged cause damage?

    Posted: 21 Oct 2020 11:08 AM PDT

So I have a nintendo switch but my TV is an older model so there's only 1 hdmi port. I switch it based on what I'm using, PC or nintendo switch

If I have my switch turned on but the HDMI cord still connected in the docker but not to the TV, can it cause damage to the cable/switch?

Pretty stupid question but can't find any answers online, idk if the electricity tries going through the cable but since there's no where to go it could cause issues etc etc. I assume I'm being paranoid but just making sure

I have looked at so many ways to fix this error. I have deleted the software distribution folder, checked for corrupted files, checked the time settings, went through administrative tools and more, but there is no way i have found that has allowed me to update my laptop
