What is this type of website called? Posted: 17 May 2020 12:18 AM PDT http://www.around-pittsburgh.com/ Hi, I'm trying to figure out if my uncle really needs this service for his business or not. It's fairly expensive. They take care of hosting/design/online ads for business's websites around my city. Supposedly the main draw is that if you type in uncle's name with his title into Google, with his business being listed on the site, he is the first to come up. BUT supposedly they're charging him almost $2000 a year for what I am assuming is hosting/design when the listing is free. On top of it, the site looks like bleh. Now, when you type his name in with his title, his personal website comes up before his listing on around-pittsburgh (it looks like each business is given a page on around-pittsburgh and an actual page on the site). It also looks like there are several of these around-YourTown sites and he has accounts on at least three of the other ones as well. Is there anyway that these listings on the around-pittsburgh site and the other sites, COMBINED with them hosting his site, could be positively affecting the listing of his independent website, so that when his name is typed in, it comes up first, so that this is worth $2000 a year to host through these people (I believe they registered the domain name and all that)? Or does he really need to be paying them $2000 a year when he could just list them on these sites for free and get the same search results? Or is his website listing completely independent of those sites, the inclusion on the around-YourTown sites is just a way to spam his name into the Google search results? I need to get the full story from my uncle about what the deal is with this website, but they handed him this...shall we say, minimal (think Geocities level), website and called it a day. He's not a technology oriented person. I'm very suspicious of the whole thing and I'm calling it scammy (or not at all worth his time), unless these listings on these around-YourTown sites, with the combination of them personally hosting his site or something or whatever else they may be doing, are actually improving his listing on Google (which I feel like, based on his name, that he would have no problem being one of the first to come up on Google when his name is searched with his title anyway...who is going to type in someone's name and title anyway? If you've heard of the person from someone else or an ad, you'll probably get all the contact info you need from them right now, and if you forget it or lose it, you're most likely not going to type the name and title into Google, you'd go back to the referral...certainly not beneficial or common enough of a search situation to justify two grand a year--his name doesn't even come up on the first page when we type in our small town and his title: like someone searching for people that provide his service in our area would). And if they are actually improving the listing of his personal site, considering his business is mainly referrals, this is probably not worth it anyway. What is going on here? Is there an umbrella term for this type of website/advertisement strategy? Is this how online advertisement usually works, with these mega sites of business listings? I have zero experience with how web advertisement works. Is $2000 a year for a likely low traffic site for a small business worth it? My intuition is tell me that uncle got ripped off or at least has zero clue about what he has actually signed up for. [link] [comments] |
Choosing a cloud storage solution for a video production small business. Posted: 17 May 2020 03:46 AM PDT My partner runs her own video production company. I'm an electronics (technician) guy so she is asked me to help her with her computer stuff. But I'm unsure what I should tell her to do. She often runs productions where the shooters are remote either in other states or provinces. And she is working on tight deadlines and turnarounds. Sometimes footage needs to be sent to an editor the day it was recorded. Currently she is using Dropbox for business but has found that it tends to be flaky right when you need it the most. The file sizes they are transmitting are huge. Just the other day they were sending 800 GB of raw footage. We've got bandwidth at home so I've been debating weather it would be best to just have a local NAS that does SFTP or something. Or should I just look at a enterprise solution. I need it to be easy for random people to be given access to upload and or download. I'm guessing she's going to be using between 1-4 TB per job. So probably one a month. If there is a better sub for those please let me know [link] [comments] |

Posted: 16 May 2020 10:34 PM PDT Recently silk browser on my fire tablet started displaying website addresses differently and it effects the copy and paste. It doesn't link anything right anymore, I always get a page telling me the website I'm looking for can't be found. With some websites (like lioden) the issue is a missing "?" after the php in the address. With other websites like imgur, I can't find the problem in the link at all. It just won't work. Some websites like DeviantArt don't have issues with links at all. I've tried everything I can think of and the issue is still there. [link] [comments] |

What is this website called index-of.co.uk? Posted: 16 May 2020 07:28 PM PDT I already posted this question on r/question but it seems that nobody answered. So I sought here for answers. The website contains a plethora of various pdf files containing lessons about programming and etc. Some also contain tutorials for making bombs, munitions and other related topics. Posted: 16 May 2020 08:30 PM PDT I have been trying to watch movies on my phone. First I tried movies anywhere because I got a code for it with The Rise of Skywalker. The audio would play just fine, but I would just get a black screen. Then I tried Disney+, but the same thing happened. When I scroll through the movie though, it still shows the preview picture of where I scrolled to in the movie. Youtube is the only place I've been able to watch anything on my phone. Would anyone know what could be causing this? [link] [comments] |

Posted: 16 May 2020 01:37 PM PDT (I apologize if I don't use any of the computer terms properly) Hello, 3 years ago, I bought a standard Alienware Aurora R6 for gaming purposes. During the 1st year and a half, it worked perfectly as I played games like Battlefield 1 and Team Fortress 2. After that, because of some issues, I had to pack away my computer for 4-ish months. After that, my games would slow down. At first, it was some minor glitches here and there, but now it's nearly impossible for me to even play games like Battlefield 1. My game would freeze, I would teleport all over the place, and my game would always set itself unto the lowest video quality while barely clocking over 60fps. I've also attempted cleaning my PC as much as possible, deleting temporary files, optimizing games, etc, but to no avail. I have no idea what happened with my PC as I'm not that much of a tech-savvy person and I'm thinking about upgrading the PC components. I want to know what I should upgrade in my PC so that it can run games like Apex Legends, Modern Warfare, GTA V, and R6 on higher FPS rates while also have high video quality. Here Are The Specs: Windows 10 Home 64-bit Intel Core i5-7400 CPU @ 3.00ghz 8gb RAM @ 1196MHz Intel HD Graphics 630 (Dell) Radeon rx-460 I would like to know firstly if it's possible for me to upgrade my Alienware Aurora with better components, and if so, what I should get. If you know how I can improve my PC without buying any parts, that's also appreciated. Thanks [link] [comments] |

What is the best desktop I can get for around $700? Posted: 16 May 2020 04:39 PM PDT Like so many of us, I need a work-from-home setup but I haven't had to purchase any kind of computer in nearly a decade so I am completely out of the loop on current computer tech. My main use for it will be work and school, but it would be great if it could also be passable at handling some gaming. [link] [comments] |
Powerline extender - what to buy? Posted: 16 May 2020 04:28 PM PDT I live in a 2-story townhouse, 1500sqft. The access point (Netgear r6300v2) is on the lower floor, in a nook behind the TV, directly connected to the Comcast modem. With the working from home, me (with an Asus Chromebox), my wife (with another Chromebox or a Windows laptop) and my son (with a Chrome laptop) all work/attend classes on the upper floor full time, on WiFi. I spend most of my day on videoconferences and I could use a better video quality. The Logitech webcam and the Jabra speaker/mic are good, but people I work with frequently complain about poor video quality or bad audio. Because of the house layout, cables are not an easy option, so I though about a powerline extender, base downstairs and receiver upstairs, wired to my chromebox. I have been looking at the TP-Link AV1000, specifically (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0725LPTZR) but the reviews seem to complain a lot about speed. Any experience you are wiling to share? Alternatives I should consider? Thanks! [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 May 2020 04:05 PM PDT I've been dealing with cox for about a week now with my internet going out. No one else on my block is having this issue so I know there's no outrage. The cox representative sent a signal to my modem to reset it, but it didnt fix it. My modem has its lights on, and I'm able to connect, but not to the internet. After speaking with someone actually knowledgeable at Cox, it sounds like my Modem is finished. Does this sound accurate? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 May 2020 07:47 AM PDT First of all, this is my first reddit post ever. So apologizes if I'm not following all the rules here. I was watching youtube on my PS4, and paused the video that I was watching while my s/o and I went outside. We ended up staying outside for a couple of hours (yes I should have turned off my playstation, but it honestly just slipped my mind). When we come back inside, my youtube was now logged into an unknown account. I was able to see their name, subscriptions, watch history, search history, recommendations, everything. However, as I hovered over their icon/name in the corner, MY name showed up on the main pop up menu. Basically, I was seeing both of our names at the same time on the account menu, but the activity shown was all from the unknown account. I immediately logged out and changed my password from my laptop. I logged out/logged back in on all of my devices and everything seems okay. My question: is this just a weird glitch, or something I should be more concerned about? If yes to the latter, is there anything I can do for protection? [link] [comments] |
Posted: 16 May 2020 08:20 AM PDT Hi guys (sorry for my bad English it's not my ,mother language) so I recently built my first gaming pc and it's been really bad I spent like 1400 bucks in total so I really don't want to keep this situation so I came here to get some solutions. Here are my problems: First of all graphic on my monitor is horrible even though I got Geforce RTX 2060(I'll make a list of my all parts later) , I can not change resolution in setting, it's grayed out it's 800*600. On Device Manager says that my gpu has been stopped by windows because it has reported problems, I tried every single methodes that I could find on google such as updating driver, disable device, resetting pc etc...but unfortunately none of them worked. I downloaded driver from manufacturer but it changed nothing. Here are my parts, including monitor. EVGA GeForce RTX 2060 Cooler Master MWE Gold 550 Full Modular PSU Asrock B450 STEEL LEGEND motherboard LC-Power Gaming 995B computer(case) Seagate HDD 3.5 2TB ST2000DM008 Barracuda Acer ED242QRAbidpx curved monitor Kingston A2000 5 00GB M.2 SSD AMD Ryzen 5 3600 processor Corsair DDR4 Vengeance LPX 2*8GB 3600 if u need a specific information please tell me. Please help me I really don't want to regret building my own pc. [link] [comments] |
Why does limiting my download speed, make the game download faster? Posted: 16 May 2020 06:40 AM PDT Hello everyone! So, I'm downloading GTA5 after it went free. Without changing anything in the options it downloads at about 200-300kB/s it often goes to 0kB/s and then goes up to 500kB/s just to go down again etc. In the launcher options there is an option to limit your transmission speed to selected value, for example when you want to download in the background and use internet at the same time or whatever. I set the limiter to 700kB/s, about 150kB higher than the highest speed of my internet anyway, and to my surprise download speed went to about 500kB and doesn't go down or up, would it mean that limiter makes it go faster? Or is it just a visual trick to make the speedometer stay on point. What is going on? (if that's important, I'm using Epic Games launcher) [link] [comments] |

DIY Steam store? Software versioning updates etc? Posted: 16 May 2020 05:54 AM PDT Hey there I have a friend that manages a set of mod packs and various other software projects. These are then distributed among friends to play/use. He updates them often so a PEER distributed platform where he can manage, update packages, and then those changes propagate across peers would be ideal. Any suggestions? I think what we need is a package manager for hobiest projects on windows. [link] [comments] |
