Working from home and internet safety/precautions

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 05:09 PM PDT

So like most people my job was recently changed to go remote. I do not use a company laptop but it is a laptop specifically reserved for my work. I log in to their system? (Idk I'm not super tech savvy) and it's almost like a mirror of how my computer at work is. Just wondering a few things; are there any safety precautions I should take to ensure customers information is secure? And even though I'll use my other computer for games/porn, is the company able to see any of that activity since it's both on the same WiFi? And any other tips you think are good ones are welcome. I hope I'm posting in the right place but wasn't sure where to ask. TIA.

    What Phone was Your Favorite?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 07:10 PM PDT

Hello Reddit, I'm WorkingFromHome and I've been directed to conduct some research. I figured you may be willing to lend some insight. I was just wondering what your favorite phone is, and why you love that phone!

Generally speaking, I don't care how old your device is/was or what brand it is, but I would like to know what was it about this device that endeared it to you so much? Were there certain features that captured your hearts and minds and kept that device in your pocket? It can be something simple or complex, I'm just trying to get an idea of what exactly helped create that emotional connection to your respective device that we're all so familiar with.

Do wifi boosters/ extenders actually work?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 09:21 PM PDT

Moved into a new place as a tenant, so I don't have control over where the router goes or the ability to put in an ethernet cable. They did originally say I could set up a booster, but I am skeptical they work well. Router is upstairs and I am in the basement.

Mostly looking for improvement on the MS, i generally play alot of games but right now i cant even run a hearthstone type, (league had 600ms)

Can you see someone's e-mail after factory reset? [OPEN POST]

    Posted: 20 Mar 2020 12:23 AM PDT

I am typing on my original phone, not Swiss phone. I got, not buyed, just got a Swiss phone from my friend. It wasn't my friend's Swiss phone. Also my friend and I aren't Swiss. I am typing on my original phone, not Swiss phone. That Swiss phone wasn't been much damaged. Only a black almost invisible crack on it's screen. It wasn't been on factory reset, so you could look at the pictures. I found someone's Swiss e-mail. And I just clicked on factory reset. But I want to know that unknown Swiss guy. That Swiss unknown guy is NOT my friend. Can you please tell me can I see that unknown guy's e-mail anymore?

    Closed Chat System?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 10:07 PM PDT

I sometimes find a nice recipe online, or a funny link/meme, or want to screenshot a reddit post for family members that don't have an account.

Some of these family members are tech illiterate, in addition to commonly missing their emails. Thus, I'd like to find a way of sending/receiving information while at home from across the house while we are all doing our own things. Is anyone familiar with an easy-to-use chat system that can meet most (or maybe all?) of the following specifications?

    1. Closed, meaning no access from outside the local area network. (critical)
    2. Privacy-focused. No data collected or sent to anyone other than the users. (critical)
    3. Cross-platform (Android and Windows)
    4. Could be used on a very old Sony Google TV (not a deal-breaker if it can't)
    5. Notifications of messages, such as a sound and pop-up similar to a text.

I recognize that there are many chat apps out there, ranging from Discord to Skype and even regular texts, however I'm looking for something specific. Something light-weight, simple and entirely closed-off from the outside world (too much data collected these days, makes my skin crawl).

Help me but tech for college

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 09:55 PM PDT

For a CS major, what are all the essentials?

Which laptop would be the best?

    Should I buy a 512GB laptop or 256GB one?

Would the new MacBook Air be better than MacBook Pro for me?

Is buying an iPad for taking notes worth it? Are there any lesser known uses for ipad that a student can use it for?

Except for laptop, phone and iPad what are the other necessities? And what are the things, which are not 'must-have' , but would still be cool to have?

How can I add Bluetooth to my system?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 06:03 PM PDT

I recently purchased a wifi/Bluetooth card for my build, it initially didn't come with wifi or bluetooth so I thought having the card was going to solve my issue.

    Wifi/Bluetooth: Gigabyte GC-WB867D-I REV

    Motherboard: ASUS ROG G751JL-DS71

After installing the drivers I was able to get the wifi functionality up and running but no Bluetooth.

Interesting thing is that my PC doesn't have a Bluetooth option in the notifications area with my OS (Windows 10 Home).

When I run the Bluetooth troubleshoot it says device does not have Bluetooth.

gps module that can connect to hotspot?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 08:09 PM PDT

Hey there, anyone know of a GPS module or device that can connect to a hotspot and then give real time data on location? Basically I have a hotspot in the middle of nowhere and want to make sure that it doesn't get stolen. Im looking for something that doesn't need another data sim card. Just something or a device that attaches to a hotspot and accessible to see location in real time. Thanks!

Question about a new router purchase I'm planning

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 07:47 PM PDT

I recently got a new upgradged Internet only package with my provider, and I would like a wifi router than can deliver the speeds I'm paying for.

According to the test customer service took while I was on call with them, I'm reaching speeds of 503mbps (on their end).

Between a Netgear AC1000 (Model: R6080-NAS) or a Linksys WiFi 5 Dual Band (Model: E5350), which one would help me take full advantage of my internet service speeds?

I see on the product description that the Netgear Router is Dual band as well, but when looking upon the specs, it mentions something like 300+700mbps. Does this mean mean the 2.4 GHz band maxes out at 300mbps, while the 5GHZ band maxes out at 700mbps?

And with the Linksys product description, it just says "Enhanced WiFi speeds of up to 1.0 Gbps". I'm assuming it's basically the same situation, concerning my understanding of how the Netgear router would operate, correct?

I look forward to any information you can provide, and thank you for your time.

Look for an iPhone app that will automatically record inbound calls

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 07:36 PM PDT

This isn't really a very techy question but I didn't know where else to ask.

I am searching for an app that will automatically record inbound calls to my iPhone, so that if I just answer the call it will be recorded without doing anything else. Doesn't have to be free.

    Hit me with some suggestions

Things look smaller after getting a bigger monitor?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 07:21 PM PDT

    Hi,

Just had a quick question. So I got a new monitor and I think the resolution went from 1920 x 1080 (old monitor) to 2560 x 1440. I wanted to know if this was the cause for all of my icons and everything looking smaller on my screen. The screen is bigger than the old monitor as well. Everything is smaller (words, taskbar, etc.) If it is not this then what is it?

    Thanks,

    Internet ps4 issues advice needed

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 06:41 PM PDT

I'll preface this by saying I'm not heavily knowledgeable on dns settings and all that. My area is more of installing hardware and that's it. My brother blocks the internet to my ps4 sometimes. This is whenever no one is playing so he can maximize his bandwidth apparently. However my ps4 randomly started to have issues where it can't connect to the internet anymore without him changing something in the dns settings. I think he screwed up the DNS settings too much and that's the issue here. I check the internet connection and my ps4 can see it and have a signal strength connection but not truly connect. Any advice?

Classes went online, can’t get my camera or microphone to work

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 01:47 PM PDT

I have a cheapy Lenovo laptop and I'm using Google Chrome. School just went online but my camera and microphone aren't working when accessed through apps.

Under settings, camera access and microphone access are set to "on."

When I access just the camera, it works. Under the "Sound" setting, the Test Mic feature shows it's working and it picks up my voice.

In Google Classroom I can't get the camera or microphone to work. I click the crossed out 🚫camera, it uncrosses it, then recrosses it again.

Under the advanced setting options in Google Chrome, it shows I've allowed access to Classroom.

Under computer setting it says Microphone currently in use by Google Chrome.

I also have hit the F8 and F4 key to ensure it's active bc the Lenovo troubleshooting lists it a common issue.

I also ran the camera and microphone test on Black Board and it appears as though it's working bc it says "smile, don't worry, no one else can see you. Can you see yourself? Yes, I can or No I can't, let's trouble shoot." So I trouble shoot and check that permission is given, which it is but the mic doesn't pick up audio and the screen is black.

Does anyone know of somewhere else I need to go to enable permission? Thanks!

    Second Monitor is Zoomed in?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 10:47 AM PDT

    Hi,

I just got a new Dell laptop and connected my monitor from work as I am now working from home during this craziness. However, my second monitor is being used to extend my displays and when I drag something over to it, it's very zoomed in on that display.

    Some notes:

    - I'm using Windows 10

    - The second monitor is an Asus

    - I'm connected using HMDI

    - I've tried going under display settings and changing the resolution however, it doesn't let me change the resolution settings for display #2.

Please help! Thank you. I'm new to reddit, and no expert with computers.

How do I stop users from kicking out and muting each other in skype calls?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 03:38 PM PDT

Because of the virus in my country, the classes are given on skype but students keep kicking out and muting each outer. They can even kick out and mute the teacher. I double-checked and all students are users and only the teacher is the admin. Is skype really this shit? What is the difference between users and administrator rights? Users can do all what administrators can except kicking others out of
the group. They can invite to the group and control 100% of the calls. wtf?!

What would be a cheap way to get a heat mapping of a person on a screen using a camera?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 07:20 AM PDT

I'm looking for a fairly accurate, but relatively cheap way in general to get the temperature of someone standing in front of it. A spot where you can check your own temperatur without touching anything.

Ideally a camera with a screen and heat mapping using a camera. Any suggestions on the camera to use and how to get it on a screen or tablet?

    Thanks in advance!

Can I host a video chat where I can see everyone but each person can only see me?

    Posted: 19 Mar 2020 10:56 AM PDT

Hi, I'm trying to find a solution to help someone who hosts small craft classes for kids. With all the Covid-19 related restrictions they've decided to put in-person classes on hold.

Are there any video chat options that will allow the students to see the instructor's video but not each other's? Mostly for privacy reasons as parents may not want other people to be able to see into their homes.

The instructor would need to see what the kids are doing so having them be the only one broadcasting isn't an option.

Thank you for any suggestions you may have.
