Need Advice for picking between Soldering or 3D Printing

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 01:19 AM PST

    Hey Everyone,

So lately I've been wanting to learn a new skill and a cool little hobby that would be not only extremely useful but challenging/entertaining.

The two I've decided on are Soldering or 3D Printing.

I'll likely start doing both eventually but with my current budget and time availability, I can only go with one to start.

Soldering, seems like a really awesome option as far as being able to repair and create electronic components. There are a few old pieces of electronics I would love to try and fix. I have been modding and repairing, Ipods for a bit as well and would like to move onto some more serious logic board repairs.

It would also be a good option for being able to buy broken electronics and fix them. That is of course if the problem is known and repairable through soldering alone. My biggest issue with go with soldering is that I will likely not be doing it very frequently.

3D printing on the other hand seems a bit more useful and something that I can do frequently. It not only has the option of creating functional objects but creative pieces of art as well. On the negative side it is a much larger investment. It also seems to require much more technical knowledge over all. If I want to design my own objects, I'll have to learn how to 3D model. Which is something I've never done before and seems quite daunting.

I know I can probably buy the cheapest versions of each (soldering iron/3D printer) and be able to both now, but I want to invest my money in tools that are good quality, durable, and reliable.

Here are some of the ones I'm looking at:

    Soldering:

    Hakko FX888D

    Weller WE1010NA

    UY Chan TS100

    3D Printer:

    Creality Ender 3 Pro

    Creality Ender 5 Pro

    EVNOVO Sidewinder X1

I'd love any advice or thoughts!

I need to connect two microphones and speakers, to talk to someone a metre away.

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 03:36 PM PST

We are wearing helmets with speakers and microphones in them that run off of a single 3.5mm jack, we need to be able to hear and talk to each other. We have previously been using motorcycle Bluetooth receivers, but is there anyway to connect locally without bluetooth, while giving us clear audio.

    Projector for D&D

    Posted: 19 Jan 2020 01:00 AM PST

wanting to make a set up where I have a projector attached to the roof - don't need anything super high quality just some basic D&D maps and would really appreciate your cheap suggestions. Asking for help because I'm afraid if I just buy the cheapest one it'll overheat or something stupid...

4G Mobile IP - does it change with location?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 03:31 PM PST

Say someone lives in city X and bought his phone and everything there. Uses 4G for internet, not Wifi. The person then travels to city Y.

Will his IP address change? Will it be detectable on the IP lookup that he is indeed currently in city Y or his IP address will stay the same and he will show as still being in city X ? We are talking about the same country and the same mobile provider.

    Thanks guys.

High latency spikes and Packet Loss Problems

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 11:00 PM PST

    Hey guys,

Over the past couple of months I've been experiencing extremely high ping spikes, upto 2.7k which will happen consistently. Please note that this happens when running ping tests to google, game servers, and other websites.

So far I have tried resetting network drivers, changing modems, changing DSL cables, trying both ethernet/Wi-Fi, fiddling with modem settings, reset my PC, tried different Wi-Fi adapters/powerline network adapters, but I'm still getting regular spikes. I've also checked task manager and checked windows update settings/cloud settings but this issue also occurs on other devices, just not as bad.

My internet DL/UL speeds are totally fine, but unfortunately the spikes are happening accross all devices but are significantly worse on my main PC. I have attached pingplotter results in the hope that someone might be able to help identify the issue.

I've contacted my ISP to see if there's anything they can check on their end, but of course they had no idea what ping/latency even was. If it helps, I'm currently with Telstra using their NBN service in Australia.

    Thanks in advance!

    Power issue. Msi gt602qd

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 10:27 PM PST

Hi. Misi gt602qd owner here. I be been using my laptop mainly as my desktop PC. It's connected to the power supply all the time and by far I had zero issues with it for the past 4 years. Today my windows 7 started showing that the battery is not charging even when it's connected to power supply and eventually laptop turns off. The only way to charge the battery and turn the laptop on is to wait while it turned off and connected to power. But it doesn't really help since the battery dies pretty quickly after about 10 minutes of use. I have never replaced the battery or power supply and believe them to be original. Is it a software problem I am experiencing or some hardware issue ? One of the battery life apps showed only 37percent of battery health. But If it's the battery then why its not working as a constant source of power since it's connected to power. I don't need it hold charge really, I just want it to pass the power to the laptop. Help me out, ladies and gentlemen. It's just hella frustrating.

I have a question about using chrome remote desktop for digital painting

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 10:10 PM PST

I have a pentium laptop which is definitely not enough for my digital painting work.

So I usually do my work with desktop and pen tablet (xp pen artist 12)

But for some reason, I wanted to do my work with laptop

So I decided to use chrome remote desktop for my work as it makes me possible to control my desktop by my laptop.

I was concerned about response delay, but it wasn't an issue

But what really matter was pen pressure.

Desktop controlled by chrome remote desktop sensed pen pressure in same level (maximum level)

Is there any way to make chrome remote desktop work with pen pressure?

    Help with port forwarding

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 11:54 AM PST

Hello. I'm trying to port forward for yes...minecraft, but I keep getting an unusual error that I haven't been able to find anything about.

I put in all the details and the correct ports, but then my browser gives me the message "The 'External / Internal' 'start / end ' port value should not exceed range of 40 , It is exceeding row : 1, Please re-enter port values properly." and doesn't save the port forward.

I'm unsure how to fix this since minecraft ports are 25565

I'm rooting my android without TWRP and need the image file for the stock boot image

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 07:04 PM PST

I'm rooting my Xperia XZ2 (H8266 dual) and I'm following this guide https://savegyd.com/magisk-root-tutorial/#bypass_google_safetynet (without custom recovery). I can't seem to find the stock boot image file. Can someone share a link where I can download it? The only trace I found was to download a program called "ExperiFirm" but all the files were in .sin format.

New monitor keeps losing signal on first boot of the day?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 06:50 PM PST

    Hi guys,

I basically re-branded my rig with new: Mobo +CPU + GPU + RAM + M.2 SSD + New case to bling out with some RGB. One of the upgrade was that I bought a new monitor to upgrade my main gaming monitor from 60hz to 144hz. Yes I know. The difference was mind-blowing!

But ever since then, every time I boot up, everything seems to be working fine and switches on (MOBO turns on) but the monitors are losing signal after it goes past the BIOS welcome screen. The monitor turns on just for the BIOS screen but when it comes to Windows login... both of my monitors are turning off with 'No Signal' message.

I would then force shut down my computer and restart it. And then everything turns on fine on the second boot. The system takes a minute or two to re-recognize my monitors and align them properly.

I have checked most everything from:

    • Replacing my power cable for both monitors. Even though the monitors are receiving power and I can see the light is on red
    • Replaced both Display cables from my monitor to my GPU
    • Removed and dust cleaned both my GPU and CPU because that came up as one of the possible solution on help forum
    • Made sure the CPU cooler is installed properly receiving power properly

I'm sort of lost for words as to whats causing this? Some people suggested to clean re-install Windows OS but I'm sort of leaving that as a last resort as it doesn't seem to be the OS. Some kind of connection fault? Did anyone have similar problem after their rig upgrade?

I would appreciate some helpful insight 🙏

What's the best way to fix this corroded battery terminal? Can I solder a new piece of metal on?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 06:05 PM PST

    https://imgur.com/FLgpblp

Unfortunately, I stored this clock with the battery in, which leaked and destroyed one of the terminals.

What's the best way I can fix this? Solder a piece of conductive metal to it?

Unfortunately, I cannot just replace the battery compartment, as it's connected to a custom PCB

What are the best solutions for file hosting for collaborative projects?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 12:24 PM PST

    Hi reddit,

I'm currently looking for an online file hosting service for a collaborative project between 5 people. We are happy to pay for a good service and we don't wish to use Google Drive due to privacy concerns.

Are there any known cloud hosting services that are well renowned for their security, privacy?

    Cheers

CPU around 80 Degrees - could it be because of my GPU?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 11:36 AM PST

I've recently got this Pc and realized that the CPU (i7-9700K - no OC) rises to ~75-80 degrees during gaming sessions. If not being stressed the temperature is somewhere at ~40 degrees.

I bought a bequiet Dark Rock 4 in order to cool the CPU properly but by now I think this might be the problem. I use an RTX 2080 Super which reaches ~60-70 Degrees at 100% usage and is rather close to the bulky CPU cooler.

Could it be that the heat produced by the GPU might be transferred to the cooler, making the cooler rather ineffective? I'm using a Mag Z390 Tomahawk if that helps you in imagining how near the parts are.

Lost (?) instructions to remove Google home mini microphone

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 03:19 PM PST

Hi there, not sure if this is the right place to post this, but I recently got one of those free Google Home Minis through Spotify. However, as someone who's concerned about my privacy, I don't want there to be any chance this thing could listen to me.

A few months ago when the Minis were first being offered, I could have sworn up and down I had seen a handful of tweets that linked instructions on how to remove its microphone. Not turn it off with the switch, but remove it. Iirc there was possibly even a video tutorial at some point. However, I cannot find any trace of these /anywhere/.

I'm mostly here to ask if anyone still has these instructions, but I'm also slightly concerned I'm going insane or this is some Mandela effect nonsense. I would like to successfully castrate this speaker but don't know if there's actually an easy way to do this.

tl;dr Remember seeing instructions on how to remove microphone from Google Home Minis, now can't find them anywhere.

    Download Speeds for Games

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 03:05 PM PST

So I have been having this issue for months on end, I have done what I can to make sense of it. Tried updating drivers, changing Ethernet cords, changing servers. I have been downloading games via Steam, Origin, Uplay, and other launchers. I appear to be only getting currently 4mbps when before my standard was ~30mbps. Sometimes i get lucky it will go up to 14mbps but its never stable. Hell I download games on my ps4 and switch way faster. So for any assistance from tech savy or general folks be kind.

    Thank you

Is a Nintendo Switch worth it?

    Posted: 18 Jan 2020 07:53 AM PST

I hope this is the right place, sorry if not.

The Switch sounds ideal for what I'm looking for, which is a console I can play on the TV and out and about. I can't seem to find anything else that allows this, but if you know any alternatives I'd like more options to consider. It seems pretty expensive, especially with games added too.

My main focus is playing on the TV and being easy to connect and disconnect, so portability is just a bonus. Does anyone here have the Switch? Is it as good as it seems?

    NFC Help

Is this an NFC card? I've downloaded a couple NFC reader apps (android) and they haven't been able to read them. I was hoping to write a copy to something to give to my girlfriend so she could access my building. Any ideas?

Thanks for the help, in advance.
